Commercial use of Image:Kumtor Mike Karavanov.jpg

edit

Hello, this is a message from an automated bot. A tag has been placed on Image:Kumtor Mike Karavanov.jpg, by another Wikipedia user, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. The tag claims that it should be speedily deleted because Image:Kumtor Mike Karavanov.jpg has a copyright license type implying some type of restricted use, such as for non-commercial use only, or for educational use only or for use on Wikipedia by permission, which was either uploaded on or after 2005-05-19 or is not used in any articles (CSD I3). While it might seem reasonable to assume that such files can be freely used on Wikipedia, this is in fact not the case[1][2]. Please do not upload any more files with these restrictions on them, because content on Wikipedia needs to be compatible with the GNU Free Documentation License, which allows anyone to use it for any purpose, commercial or non-commercial. See our non-free content guidelines for more more information.

If you created this media file and want to use it on Wikipedia, you may re-upload it (or amend the image description if it has not yet been deleted) and use the license {{GFDL-self}} to license it under the GFDL, or {{cc-by-sa-2.5}} to license it under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike license, or use {{PD-self}} to release it into the public domain.

If you did not create this media file but want to use it on Wikipedia, there are two ways to proceed. First, you may choose one of the fair use tags from this list if you believe one of those fair use rationales applies to this file. Second, you may want to contact the copyright holder and request that they make the media available under a free license.

If the article has already been deleted, see the advice and instructions at WP:WMD. This bot is only informing you of the nomination for speedy deletion, it did not nominate Image:Kumtor Mike Karavanov.jpg itself. Feel free to leave a message on the bot operator's talk page if you have any questions about this or any problems with this bot. If you have any questions about what to do next or why your image was nominated for speedy deletion please ask at Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. Non-free use disputed for Image:Centerra logo.gif

edit
  This file may be deleted.

Thanks for uploading Image:Centerra logo.gif. However, there is a concern that the rationale you have provided for using this image under "fair use" may be invalid. Please read the instructions at Wikipedia:Non-free content carefully, then go to the image description page and clarify why you think the image qualifies for fair use. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If it is determined that the image does not qualify under fair use, it will be deleted after seven days according to our Criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot 04:38, 14 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

Kumtor Gold MIne

edit

A {{prod}} template has been added to the article Kumtor Gold MIne, suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process. All contributions are appreciated, but the article may not satisfy Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and the deletion notice explains why (see also "What Wikipedia is not" and Wikipedia's deletion policy). You may contest the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}} notice, but please explain why you disagree with the proposed deletion in your edit summary or on its talk page. Also, please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Even though removing the deletion notice will prevent deletion through the proposed deletion process, the article may still be deleted if it matches any of the speedy deletion criteria or it can be sent to Articles for Deletion, where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached. → AA (talkcontribs)11:24, 14 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

License tagging for Image:Cjatyr-Kul.jpg

edit

Thanks for uploading Image:Cjatyr-Kul.jpg. Wikipedia gets thousands of images uploaded every day, and in order to verify that the images can be legally used on Wikipedia, the source and copyright status must be indicated. Images need to have an image tag applied to the image description page indicating the copyright status of the image. This uniform and easy-to-understand method of indicating the license status allows potential re-users of the images to know what they are allowed to do with the images.

Your recent edits to Manas International Airport

edit

Hi, I reverted your recent edits to this page and explained why on the talk page. I'm hoping you agree with my reasoning. Thanks. -- Hux 18:14, 19 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

PS Out of interest, I notice that most of your edits are to articles relating to Kyrgyzstan. Are you from here originally? An expat maybe? Or are you just interested in the area? I'd be interested to know your connection with the place, if you don't mind the question! -- Hux 18:17, 19 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

Born and raised, but no longer live there. Thanks for keeping the Kyrgyzstan pages updated - I say, a page on Bishkek still requires a lot of work... Addd wiki 18:30, 19 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

Yeah, I agree. It starts off okay but after the history section it starts to read like an amateur travel brochure. I think I'll have to do something about that! -- Hux 20:10, 19 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

By the way - on the subject of changes in the Manas article. Not sure if it was you who added the following paragraph:

During the Cold War, the airport was home to a Soviet Air Force base. The ruins of the base's military alert facility and weapon storage bunkers can still be seen around the airport.

I lived in Bishkek back in the Soviet times and went through Manas countless times, but never heard about it being an “air force base” or saw a military plane there (short of an odd IL-76 transport). There has always been (and still remains) an air force helicopter pilot training facility on the NW edge of the city (so called Frunze-1 or “110-й квартал” located here: 42°54′00″N 74°31′00″E / 42.90000°N 74.51667°E / 42.90000; 74.51667 and properly mentioned in the Bishkek article) and a (not very actively used) military airstrip in Kant, but Manas? Granted, as any Soviet airport, it was built to be of dual military/civilian use (hence the 4,000 m runway, for example), but, to my knowledge, Ganci is the first ever military installation at Manas...Addd wiki 04:20, 20 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

I didn't add it so I just assumed it was true and it seemed to make sense given the unusually long runway, which can only have been built that way to accommodate Soviet bombers. Mind you, if there were any large, military aircraft there then they certainly would've been visible to passengers because there would've been nowhere else to put them except on the parking apron in front of the terminal (as the US does now with its tankers and cargo planes). If nobody ever saw any there then, as you say, it seems more likely that it was built as a potential dual-use site rather than ever being home to an actual, fully-functional, Soviet base. The trouble is, I don't see how we could change the text to reflect that without it being considered Original Research, which isn't allowed. Can you find a link that would back up what you're saying? (A Russian link would be okay, given that I doubt there's anything out there in English.)
Also, I'm wondering if Manas was at least temporarily used as a Soviet base during the Soviet-Afghan war. It seems likely, given its position and given that the US is using it for exactly that now. -- Hux 06:05, 20 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

Fair point – although whoever put out that statement didn’t cite any sources either – and finding a source that will prove Manas was NOT an Air Force base may be tricky… I will see if I can find something….

Manas was not used in Soviet-Afghan war in any significant way – the coalition using it right now has little to do with the proximity to Afghanistan and everything – with political climate (since Kyrgyzstan is relatively stable and the only country in the region that can be described as pro-Western). Soviet bases used in the Afghan war were overwhelmingly located in Afghanistan itself (Bagram Air Base, Kandahar Airfield, etc.) due to mostly tactical nature of aircraft warfare during the war; those on the Soviet territory were mostly in southern Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan and Tajikistan (close to the Afghan border) with most important being Karshi-Khanabad and Merv. Addd wiki 14:05, 20 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

You're right about the difficulty of proving a negative, of course. Maybe we should remove the part that says Manas was a Soviet air base and just find something to support the more likely scenario that it was constructed as a dual-use facility.
About the Soviet-Afghan war, I was going to ask if maybe they used Karshi-Khanabad - that would make sense. For the US, though, proximity to Afghanistan has at least something to do with using Manas, but obviously the main reason right now is that it's the only country in the region that will let them have a base there, after the Uzbeks kicked them out. ;) -- Hux 20:44, 20 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

Agree - all I was trying to say was that Manas in not THAT close to Afghanistan...Addd wiki 20:57, 20 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

By interpretation at the appropriate wikiprojects, consistently upheld at AfD, individual species of animals, plants, fungi, and microorganisms are considered notable fro wikipedia purposes, no matter how short the article. I know it sounds strange, but that's the way it is. DGG (talk) 20:33, 25 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

File Copyright problem

Thank you for uploading File:Sary_Chelek.jpg. However, it currently is missing information on its copyright status. Wikipedia takes copyright very seriously. It may be deleted soon, unless we can determine the license and the source of the file. If you know this information, then you can add a copyright tag to the image description page.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their license and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link.

If you have any questions, please feel free to ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thanks again for your cooperation. Chris 05:44, 27 April 2009 (UTC)Reply
