Usernames
editAn editor who is a student on your course has requested a change of username to their realname with the note that it's a Wikieducation course requirement. Wikipedia recommends that users do NOT use their real names - WP:REALNAME.
While I'm not averse to renaming the editor if that's what they wish for themself, I'm reluctant to be complicit in coercing them to use their real name. Pinging : Helaine (Wiki Ed) & Ian (Wiki Ed) - please advise. Cabayi (talk) 19:19, 12 January 2021 (UTC)
I don't have a problem with the student using either their real name or their editor username, as long as I know who the student is. It's up to the individual. Adovevie (talk) 20:21, 12 January 2021 (UTC)
- It's not at all our policy to tell students to use their real names. In fact, we advise the opposite. The instructor will always be able to see the students' real name (visible only to them and us) on the dashboard. Thanks. Helaine (Wiki Ed) (talk) 21:25, 12 January 2021 (UTC)
- Thank you both for your replies. The request got rejected in the interim for being too similar to an existing name. I left a note on the now-closed request for the user which I don't have high hopes that they'll see. The user doesn't have an email address set either. Thanks for taking the time.
