Everything I have written under the titles Antler orogeny and Sonoma orogeny is referenced to published papers including my own. I have no ambitions to publish any more papers; I am retired from the U.S. Geological Survey. These two articles summarize a lifetime of research on the tectonic history of NevadaAhlitanah (talk) 00:52, 28 February 2014 (UTC)Reply

Seems you have replaced the content of two articles with a rewrite based on valid references. However the content was lacking links and accepted Wikipedia formatting. There have been two different reactions. With the Antler orogeny page an experienced user took the time to edit your rewrite to make it "fit" the Wikipedia style and encyclopedia format. It still needs work. On the Sonoma orogeny page you got a different reaction as the changes you made were deemed too drastic. I see User:Mikenorton (who is a geologist) has offered to redo your changes on the Sonoma page and work with you to rewrite it into acceptable Wikipedia style. I would suggest that you thank him for the offer and work with him when he has the time to work on the article. Your version and your solid references are still available in the article history. Thank you for your work, and please work with us as we work to improve the articles. Vsmith (talk) 02:34, 28 February 2014 (UTC)Reply
I appreciate the work that Ahlitanah put into Antler Orogeny: it's good when experts decide to contribute to Wikipedia. I am happy to assist in improving Sonoma Orogeny. —hike395 (talk) 04:38, 28 February 2014 (UTC)Reply
I thought that was USGS style. Well, welcome to Wikipedia, and thanks for the excellent articles. Now that we are reassured this is not (say) some kid ripping-off Granddad's work, I think we will be restoring the Sonoma orogeny material. (Suitably adapted, off course.) Lots of stuff to learn; ask if you have any particular questions. ~ J. Johnson (JJ) (talk) 21:56, 28 February 2014 (UTC)Reply

Thanks, hike395 for re-formatting Antler orogeny. I know USGS formatting but Wiki's style is a mystery.

Mikenorton, thanks for your offer to help me get Sonoma orogeny into Wiki's format. Obviously, I need a lot of help.Ahlitanah (talk) 23:08, 28 February 2014 (UTC)Reply

I just rewrote your version of Sonoma orogeny, in the wiki style, combined with the existing short article. Could you check to see if I introduced any factual errors? Thanks! —hike395 (talk) 01:42, 1 March 2014 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for doing that Hike395, I was just about to head away on a trip with only limited internet availability - that's exactly what I had planned. Mikenorton (talk) 17:15, 1 March 2014 (UTC)Reply

To Hike395, I made a few small changes on the first page, otherwise the rest is acceptable. Many thanks for your helpAhlitanah (talk) 23:10, 1 March 2014 (UTC)Reply

Your request for undeletion

edit

Hello. This message is being sent to inform you that a response has been made at Wikipedia:Requests for undeletion regarding a submission you made. The thread is Sonoma orogeny.

Did you write that new version yourself? If not, please read Wikipedia:Copy-paste: Wikipedia cannot accept material copied from another source unless the actual copyright holder makes a formal copyright release. JohnCD (talk) 10:34, 26 February 2014 (UTC)Reply

I wrote the new version myselfAhlitanah (talk) 17:11, 27 February 2014 (UTC)Reply

Ahlitanah: presumably the same answer applies to the similar edit you did at Antler orogeny? This work reflects some serious research, and possibly something you might be thinking of publishing under your own name. But if it originally appears in Wikipedia, without any comment, any subsequent publication would seem like you had copied it from Wikipedia, which would be quite embarrassing. So just to clarify matters, could you explain a little more about the context of what you have written? ~ J. Johnson (JJ) (talk) 21:30, 27 February 2014 (UTC)Reply
See Ahlitanah's comment above. Vsmith (talk) 02:34, 28 February 2014 (UTC)Reply

References

Here is a step by step guide on references and you can find more info at Help:Referencing for beginners. w.carter-Talk 21:38, 14 February 2015 (UTC)Reply

Adding references can be easy

edit

Just follow the steps 1, 2 and 3 as shown and fill in the details

Hello! Here's how to add references from reliable sources for the content you add to Wikipedia. This helps maintain the Wikipedia policy of verifiability.

Adding well formatted references is actually quite easy:

  1. While editing any article or a wikipage, on the top of the edit window you will see a toolbar which says "Cite". Click on it.
  2. Then click on "Templates".
  3. Choose the most appropriate template and fill in as many details as you can. This will add a well formatted reference that is helpful in case the web URL (or "website link") becomes inactive in the future.
  4. Click on Preview when you're done filling out the 'Cite (web/news/book/journal)' to make sure that the reference is correct.
  5. Click on Insert to insert the reference into your editing window content.
  6. Click on Show preview to Preview all your editing changes.
  • Before clicking on Save page, check that a References header   ==References==   is near the end of the article.
  • And check that   {{Reflist}}    is directly underneath that header.
7.  Click on Save page. ...and you've just added a complete reference to a Wikipedia article.

You can read more about this on Help:Edit toolbar or see this video File:RefTools.ogv.
Hope this helps, --w.carter-Talk 21:38, 14 February 2015 (UTC)Reply

Pictures

edit

After you have submitted the draft Draft:Eureka Quartzite you can still improve the article while it is waiting for review to be accepted into the main space. If you want to place a picture in it, which is always recommended, you'll find some tips on these pages: Wikipedia:Picture tutorial and User:Yunshui/Images for beginners. w.carter-Talk 20:10, 23 February 2015 (UTC)Reply

Convert

edit

I've fixed the convert in the article. That is necessary since different countries use different systems. You can read all about it in Help:Convert. w.carter-Talk 20:22, 23 February 2015 (UTC)Reply

When you use the convert template you only put in the first measure, the template does the conversion itself. If you try to put in two variables you get an error. Look at the help page mentioned above for more info. w.carter-Talk 16:37, 24 February 2015 (UTC)Reply
