WikiProject Saudi Arabia

edit

Hi Ahmed. If you are interested in Saudi Arabian topics, you may consider joining WP:KSA, the WikiProject Saudi Arabia. The WikiProject helps coordinate work on related articles. It probably is a good place to start. The Behnam 22:03, 2 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

Ahmed -

I recently joined the WikiProject Saudi Arabia. Among other reasons, I was appalled by the introduction to the Saudi Arabia section.

I wrote another proposed introduction, but as a newbie to the system was unable to decipher the jargon regarding the procedure to request a peer review. Specifically, point two, the click on "request has been made" link... since none appeared. Therefore, let me send you the following, and you can either circulate it, or tell me how, more explicitly.

I propose the following:

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (Arabic: المملكة العربية السعودية, al-Mamlaka al-ʻArabiyya as-Saʻūdiyya) is the largest country on the Arabian Peninsula. It is bordered by Jordan on the northwest, Iraq on the north and northeast, Kuwait, Qatar, Bahrain, and the United Arab Emirates on the east, Oman on the southeast, and Yemen on the south, with the Persian Gulf to its northeast and the Red Sea to its west. It has an estimated population of 27.5 million, and its size is approximately 2,150,000 square km (830,000 square miles)

The Kingdom is sometimes called "The Land of The Two Holy Mosques" in reference to Mecca (Makkah) and Medina, the two holiest places in Islam. In English, it is most commonly referred to as Saudi Arabia. The Kingdom was founded by Abdul-Aziz bin Saud, whose efforts began in 1902 when he captured the Al-Saud’s ancestral home of Riyadh, and culminated in 1932 with the proclamation, and recognition of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, the first time in history that this extensive area of the Arabian peninsula had been unified.

Saudi Arabia, along with Russia, is one of the world’s largest petroleum exporter. Petroleum exports represent 75% of the government’s revenue, though serious efforts are being made to diversify the economy. The Kingdom annually hosts the Haj, the pilgrimage to Mecca (Makkah), one of the five pillars of Islam. Between two to three million pilgrims participate each year. Total GDP is approximately $450 billion, ranking it 27th in the world. The government is a monarchy, which is officially advised by a majlis (consultative assembly). The legal basis for the government is Islamic law (the Sharia)

____

I am particularly disturbed by the existing paragraph three. I reviewed 10 other countries: USA, France, Chile, Libya, Myanmar, Japan, Malawi, India, New Zealand, and Russia. NO other country has a preamble that addresses "human rights" deficiencies, nor the "welfare state" nature of the economy. (Yet there are these issue in all countries)

Wikipedia stresses "neutrality", and there are substantial dollops of "Orientalism" in the existing preamble.

As you can see from my bio, I am an American who lived in the Kingdom over a 25 year period. I recognize that I am one of only two Westerners involved in this project...still.... I feel I can make a substantial contribution. It is not a question of "you" and "us". I am an American, but that is not my primary identification.... I have a stake, for myself, and my children, in rendering a realistic picture of the Kingdom, devoid of stereotypes, so that the current conflict may be brought to an end.

Your assistance in this matter is appreciated. Thanks

Are you actually in the Saudi military or are you working on information relating to Saudi military? Anyway, was just browsing at the Kingdom's potential, a friend recommended a drop in. Anyway, I refuse to sound or appear ignorant regarding this matter altogether. Just thought I'd drop a few words. Invitation to Wikipedia meetup in London

Wikimedia UK logo

Date: 13:00 onwards, Sunday 10 August 2008

Venue: Penderel's Oak pub, Holborn WC1 map

More information: Wikipedia:Meetup/London 12

Hello,

I noticed that you have listed yourself as a Wikipedian in London, so I thought you might like to come to one of our monthly social meetups. The next one is going to be on Sunday 10 August, which might well be rather short notice, but if you can't come this time, we try to have one every second Sunday of the month.

If you haven't been before, these meetups are mainly casual social events for Wikipedia enthusiasts in which we chat about Wikipedia and any other topics we fancy. It's a great way to meet some very keen Wikipedians, but we'd also love for you to come along if you're interested in finding out more about Wikipedia, other Wikimedia projects, or other collaborative wiki projects too.

The location is a pub that is quite quiet and family friendly on a Sunday lunchtime, so hopefully younger Wikipedians will also feel welcome and safe. Alcohol consumption is certainly not required!

Although the meetups are popular, many UK-based editors still don't know about them. It would be great to welcome some fresh faces, so I hope you can come along.

Yours,

James F. (talk) 09:27, 3 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

London Wikimedia Fundraiser

edit

Good evening! This is a friendly message from Chase me ladies, I'm the Cavalry, inviting you to the London Wikimedia Fundraising party on 19th December 2010, in approximately one week. This party is being held at an artistic London venue with room for approximately 300 people, and is being funded by Ed Saperia, a non-Wikipedian who has a reputation for holding exclusive events all over London. This year, he wants to help Wikipedia, and is subsidising a charity event for us. We're keen to get as many Wikimedians coming as possible, and we already have approximately 200 guests, including members of the press, and some mystery guests! More details can be found at http://ten.wikipedia.org/wiki/London - expect an Eigenharp, a mulled wine hot tub, a free hog roast, a haybale amphitheatre and more. If you're interested in coming - and we'd love to have you - please go to the ten.wikipedia page and follow the link to the Facebook event. Signing up on Facebook will add you to the party guestlist. Entry fee is a heavily subsidised £5 and entry is restricted to over 18s. It promises to be a 10th birthday party to remember! If you have any questions, please email me at chasemewiki at gmail.com.

Hope we'll see you there, (and apologies for the talk page spam) - Chase me ladies, I'm the Cavalry (talk) 17:57, 12 December 2010 (UTC)Reply

Innocence of Muslims film trailer

edit

Hi, I'm writing because you are listed in Category:Translators ar-en. It was recently pointed out at Talk:Innocence of Muslims#ARABIC Wikipedia version that the English Wikipedia article on the deliberately inflammatory film trailer Innocence of Muslims contains very much more detailed information about the deliberate deceit on the part of the filmmakers to try to obscure their identity and the nature of the trailers which has not yet been added to the Arabic version at ar:براءة_المسلمين which is getting about 8,000 page views per day presently. Would you please consider adding some of the details which might help Arabic readers understand some of the missing details of the trailers? Thank you for your consideration. —Cupco 22:02, 14 September 2012 (UTC)Reply
