Teatro Apollo

It might have been nice if you had taken the trouble to see that a Wiki link existed to the "Teatro di Apollo" whewn you corrected the name to "Teatro Apollo".
Obviously, the existing wiki page was wrong, and a siple check on Google confirmed this.

So, instead of just leaving the corrected name to produce no link, you might have taken a bit more time. I've now corrected the link. Vivaverdi 15:51, 1 March 2006 (UTC)

Text of "Nessun dorma"

Hi Al,

could you please cite your source for the text you put in the "Nessun dorma" article? Is it a book from Ricordi or similar? If so I'd like to know the ISBN. I'm a native Italian speaker and I can respectfully assure you that the words I have reported are the words actually sung when the aria is performed. If you don't have a CD at hand you can listen an A. Bocelli performance here [1]. Anyway, could you at least explain why your version omits several parts ("...") and the "No, no" before "sulla tua bocca lo dirò"? --Gennaro Prota 00:51, 24 March 2006 (UTC)

About "Nessun dorma" again

Hi Al,

everyone will keep reverting your changes if you don't cite a source and don't explain why the text is written that way. I asked you to give the libretto ISBN number, which you didn't, and info about metre, which you didn't. Please, be polite and do not discredit other contributors' work. Use edit summaries as edit summaries. Incidentally, the "Nessun Dorma" article as it is now is nothing more than a child's play; there's still a long way to go before talking about "serious work", with or without the exact text. --Gennaro Prota 11:57, 29 March 2006 (UTC)

I'm replying here as I don't know if you have my talk page on your watch list. Next time we'll try keeping the whole discussion in one place. I reverted your manual move of "Nessun Dorma" because that way of "moving" prevents comparing with the "real" previous version, looses the edit history (the previous modifications remain "recorded" at the old history page) and doesn't move the related talk page. As needed in this case, I've put a request for move. You can express your vote at Talk:Nessun_Dorma.

Normally any logged in user can move a page by using the "move link" (at the top, besides "discussion", "history" etc. if you use the default theme). However this was not possible in this case because the destination page was already "occupied", so to speak. Note also that this is a particular move that only involves capitalisation changes. The general move procedure (for a single page) involves putting a different tag on the source talk page.

Please, don't use copy-and-paste again! In case you have troubles, please ask someone to do the move for you.

Username

This username does not actually exist. Usernames are case sensitive. Could you please create this username and use that account? That way you will get a nice orange bar telling you that you have messages, other people will be able to see your contributions, etc. This way is very confusing. Mak (talk) 19:15, 25 July 2006 (UTC)

Messa di Gloria

Hello Al. Could you explain why you have replaced references to Puccini's Messa di Gloria with just "Messa"? In what sense is it "incorrectly" called a Messa di Gloria – is it because the rest of the mass is there too, not just the Gloria? If there is a reasonable objection to that title, then that could be pointed out, but the entry should not have been moved to a title that is never used and which no-one would think to look it up under, just because of some unexplained technicality. I am unable to find any evidence that the work is ever called "Messa". The usual alternative title is Messa a quattro voci. Can you point to a recording or score with the title "Messa"? You were perfectly clear all the way along that you think that the work should not be called the Messa di Gloria, and you obviously feel very strongly about that. However, that is not the issue: the entry should refer to the work by the name that is actually used, not by one that someone might consider a more acceptable substitute. You mention a catalogue that I don't have access to, though you do not quote what it says, but nowhere on the web, nor in Grove, can I find any case of it being called "Missa". Presumably you can't either, or you would have responded to my invitation. Just as a rough reference, there are about 71,000 Google hits for '"messa di gloria" puccini', and some 13,000 for '"messa a quattro voci" puccini'. Many things in life are called by names that, strictly speaking, are "wrong", as you put it — will you also be renaming the millipede, "tin" foil, the English "horn" and the Koala "bear"? Please let's not start an edit war on this, I'm sure we both have better things to do. Best wishes Flapdragon 12:39, 19 February 2007 (UTC)

Al, please try and maintain a civil tone. You are welcome to disagree that an entry should refer to the work by the name that is actually used, though I suggest most people would find that obvious, but then you would be disagreeing with Wikipedia itself. If it is not obvious to you, then perhaps working on Wikipedia is not quite as straightforward as you assume; it may help you to follow the links posted to the top of your user page when you joined, specifically focussing on naming conventions.

Meanwhile you have still to produce the first shred of evidence to show that the normal name for this work is "Missa", which, let's face it, is clearly not the case, or you would be able to demonstrate the fact easily. You also "disagree", of course, with the internet, which has strangely missed all those cases of it being called that. It is difficult to argue with figures of 71,000-13,000-?nil (MdiG-MaQV-M).

Furthermore, do you actually have any evidence that others object to the term Messa di Gloria? I took it on trust but that idea really requires a source, or if it is no more than your personal feeling, it falls foul of the "No original research" rule. I note that you have still to provide the citation from the catalogue you mention, though in any case that has little relevance to the question of the name that is actually used in normal practice. In the light of these facts, please stop moving the article to the wrong place and focus your excellent efforts on more productive edits. I have added a "{{prod}}" template to the article Jim Nobles, suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process. All contributions are appreciated, but I don't believe it satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and I've explained why in the deletion notice (see also "What Wikipedia is not" and Wikipedia's deletion policy). You may contest the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}} notice, but please explain why you disagree with the proposed deletion in your edit summary or on its talk page. Also, please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. incipit

Thanks for enlightening me on the use of incipit. I'd never come across this term before and my usual standard dictionary only refers to it's use as an introduction for medieval manuscripts. I do understand the distinction, but title (however incorrect) is how most people would refer to an incipit once it had progressed from within a score to another media like a record label, CD cover or an individual song sheet. Le Villi and the Narrator

Agree with you, as a matter of fact, when I first adding the selected recordings, I didnt include the narrator because I just couldnt figure out how and where to put the "role". However, I just changed the format, splitting the role out of cast list - Jay (talk) 02:26, 15 November 2008 (UTC)

In the "Selected recordings" section, the spoken role has to be added because it what actually recorded. However if the role is not in the libretto, you can delete "narrator" from the "Role" section. I cannot removed Tito Gobbi and Massimo Foschi names from "Selected recordings" because their voices are included by the label companies, refer for Massimo Foschi and Tito Gobbi. Even if the part is not in the libreto, the credit must go to them. - Jay (talk) 02:58, 15 November 2008 (UTC)

Hmm, I am afraid I don’t really know how to write it because I am now confused. If the narrator is not part of Puccini’s idea or not in the libretto, how come the part is there since the first performance on the 31 May 1884? La rondine

Al, could you check your sources tell me if you think the role table for the 1917 Monte Carlo premiere is correct. Specifically:

1. Was Gobin a bass/baritone role?
2. Was Gobin sung by Jean-Francisque Delmas (aka Jean-François Delmas)?

Some sources give that role to Charles Delmas, but I'm pretty sure Charles Delmas was a tenor. On the other hand, the Grove article on Jean-Francisque Delmas doesn't even mention that he sang in the Rondine premiere. Best, Voceditenore (talk) 16:21, 17 November 2008 (UTC)

Italian translation question

Hi: A question has come up about translation of the Italian imperfect tense in E lucevan le stelle -- I was hoping you might be able to provide an answer. The question is whether the use of 'the gate was creaking' for 'stridea l'uscio' is more correct than 'the gate creaked', or whether both are wrong and we should be using 'the gate used to creak', or something else (See Talk:E lucevan le stelle). We are comparing the literal translaiton of the aria here with the current version. I've also asked user: voceditenore. Any help you can provide would be appreciated.
