AlexNewArtBot - non selection of some articles

I have been monitoring the "literature" part of this bots work for some time now and have in the last few days also been looking at the "New pages" feed from wikipeida. I have been wondering how the Bot has been missing article creations like.

• Chelsea Horror Hotel
• The Rouge Commodore
• Black Womb

But finding articles like.

• Space Lawyer
• My Mortal Enemy

Thanks for noticing it! It appears that the recent new feature of the yellowing "Non-patrolled pages" has broken my bot reading the new pages. It only read the non yellowed "patrolled" ones. I believe I have fixed the code, it won't affect the today run in the progress, but the future runs.

Hi, Mr. Mussav, if you think some editors violate the letter or the spirit of wikipolicies try to talk with them or draw attention of admins (there are more than 2000 of them on enwiki) or try WP:DR. What you do not do is to use socks or otherwise game the system. Alexei Gorokhov

Hi there. I am new to Wikipedia and am trying to improve an orphaned article on the violinist Alexei Gorokhov. I noticed you made some improvements and wanted to say thankyou! Your pages on culture are fabulous. Any tips on how best to find resources on Gorokhov to improve the article would be great. As an English speaker I am having trouble finding out about him, although I have been in touch with one of his former students who may have some resources!

Nochnoy Dozor (pressure group)

Nochnoy Dozor (advocacy group) was moved and redirected (last steps by an anonymous IP!) so that its history and talk page got lost. I like the move, but would like the information lost restored. This request is totally unpartisan: User:Martintg recently changed the text to answer my criticism on the talk page about the POVness of the word "Interestingly". It is important that people know Martintg made that edit, why he did the edit, and that at l(e)ast the feud seems to be subsiding a bit. Luckily, there was no archive on the talk page.

I hope you still consider yourself neutral enough to make that change? Or should I first ask Martintg and his main opponent, User:RJ CG to agree to that?

  • Thanks. There's a Wikipedia:WikiProject Mountains and Wikipedia:WikiProject Volcanoes. Similar list for the mountains would be great. • http://translit.us/ seems to work fine when I tested it (obviously have no need for it myself). If it is not you wanted please describe the problem in a few more words, there might be problems e.g. with different encodings for Cyrillic (besides Unicode, there are a few encodings using one-byte characters: Windows-1251, KOI-8, Mac, etc) Alex Bakharev (talk) 23:54, 9 March 2008 (UTC)

• Hi, Alex. Thank you for your help. I found books translated from Russian on the history of Turkic/proto-Turkic peoples. However, the translators left the bibliography and cited references in Cyrillic alphabet. I'd like to find their translations as well but could not check from the library's search engine, since it seems to work only in latin. Alex, I created a new page - it was not finished - and when I came back today there are dozens of your bots linked to the article. Can you explain what they are and what purpose the serve? The ones that count points are quite interesting from a macabre viewpoint. The article I was writing is Philip Parsons Young Playwrights Award. • Hi, Stellar. The bot once a day reads all the new articles added during a day and decided if they belong to a particular topic. Currently almost 200 of such feeds are supported. The bot decided that your article belongs to Australia related topics (User:AlexNewArtBot/AustraliaSearchResult displayed on Wikipedia:New articles (Australia)) and Literature related topics User:AlexNewArtBot/LiteratureSearchResult displayed at Portal:Literature/New pages) participants of the correspondent project and/or people interested in Australia or Literature might want to read those feeds to see if there are new articles to enjoy, collaborate in editing or remove as a garbage (I hope your article is not of the last type!). There are also log files that are overwritten every time the bot runs. They are for people who rights rules for the bot if they worry why an article is unexpectedly included or excluded from a feed. Out of curiosity the bot considered your article as belonging to waterbodies (you know, rivers, lakes, that staff) because there was word lagoon in it and whether to include it into horticulture because there was word seed in it. In both cases the bot decided that there was not enough specific words to warrant inclusion (good bot). In a day or two the logs will be overwritten and the links from them will disappear. Hi; Serendipitously I had come across the new article page for WikiProject Canada and was very much intrigued by its functionality for keeping track of new articles developed around a common theme. I write and watch articles for the Canadian Province of Newfoundland and Labrador and would very much like to stay abreast of new articles created around the province and any reference to it. Currently I visit each article and check for “What links here” and proceed to the last articles created… very time consuming. How would one go about getting a bot set up such as this just for the articles of interest I’m looking for? I would appreciate any help you can afford me to achieve that. Basically, I would like to slow down with all that "criticism" things, but the outright deletion of sourced texts is something I can not agree with. About that comment

The issue I brought up is about someone that calls other countries non-historic. I am not a citizen of any of those countries mentioned, but I feel ashamed that people resort to this kind of language, belittling other people and cultures. Raising awareness about these issues in my view is essential to have a wikipedia free of prejudice. • Please read WP:NPA: we usually do not discuss political opinions of users (wiki-editors come from all sorts of political backgrounds) and discuss violations of wikipoicies and disruptions only if it is not absolutely necessary. If Ali wants to push his opinion into an article we would ask for a notable citation if he put an extravagant (or most probably mis-stated) opinion on a talk page - then why should somebody care? If Ali persistently violates some policies then start an WP:RFC. Discussing a wikieditor on a dozen of unrelated pages constitutes WP:DE. Thanks Alex. Also response to Heja. The context is clear and some of these countries I mentioned Kuwait, Oman and UAE etc. are non-historical and the others like the Caucus countries are weak (relative to their much larger neighbors). It was a discussion from 3 months ago. I can find google books reference for both of my claims (non-historic with regards to say Kuwait and weak political entities in the Caucus). It was a discussion between me and another user, 3 months ago on my talkpage and trying to instigate Georgian and Armenian users against me will not work and is taking a battle ground mentality, in violation of Wikipedia rules. I am talking about political entities and not average citizens. In fact I did not say anything about Armenian Genocide which you tried to use in order to instigate Armenian users against me. There is no racism except the fact that you are trying to instigate other users. Your action to provoke me did not work and it backfired. I see you've been reverting User:Maracana's edits en masse lately. I thought the consensus was to keep the original place of birth like: (Tbilisi, Georgian SSR, USSR), rather than simply Georgia? BanRay 10:39, 21 March 2008 (UTC)

• I am not aware of any discussion on that matter. What I see is the revert war on the large amount of articles and would rather have a discussion first and then changing later. So I have started with reverting to the stable variant of the article. Substitutions like Ukraine -> Soviet Union and Georgia -> Soviet Union AFAIK are not acceptable for many users (I personally do not much care either way). Please see the centralized discussion. Consensus has been reached that the Sovereign state is preferable. Therefore, I am not edit warring, but defending the consensus. There has been a major discussion going on about this topic for months now on http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Centralized_discussion/Country_of_birth. Moreover 75% of the discussion was about the labeling for the Soviet Union, but it looks like only Estonians took part in the discussion (and they were strongly against the decision. There were no announcements on any related boards and projects. It looks like Ukrainians are furious about the proposed changes. Is it possible not to implement the decision (at least for the Soviet Union) now but make an announcement on the related boards and see what happen? I might be mistaken but I do not think the proposal will fly unless some mentioning of the present countries will be made (e.g. Pskov, Russia then part of the Soviet Union), there might be a separate infobox for the fSU if it to complex for the general case. Alex Bakharev, you are quite right in your observation on an alleged "sovereign country" consensus. Maracana has a tendency to see what he wants to see. Not only is there nothing like a consensus with regards to the sovereign state being "preferable", in fact when that option was put for a vote not a single person supported it. I am sure Maracana would have given a solitary vote if he had not been busy bulk-editing articles. Just stopping by to say thanks for all the work you've put into the election fairness article, and thanks for keeping it truly neutral and accurate by presenting relevant arguments from both sides, rather than just trying to fill it with baseless conspiracies by third parties (or praise, for that matter).

I realize that I may have come off as a little pro-kremlin myself, but the truth is that I totally welcome valid criticism such as from Zyuganov - his opinion is notable and deserves to be heard. I just really didn't want this article to turn into another biased reflection of western media, something that's begun to annoy me as of late.

• Well, I had to stop the edit war and every version protected is by definition the wrong version to somebody. You have inserted a very long and probably biased toward the anti-UPA POV piece. It may break the structure of the article and upset the balance. Probably it is better to enter it into the article gradually piece by piece giving people time to accommodate every piece into the article structure and, if needed, counter the bias. ... deserves a decent reply. This is mine.

In an ideal world, content would always take precedence over anything on the wiki. And as a long term content writer myself it usually does..... except when the cost of ignoring conduct issues is enabling other harm. Tomorrows editors may be deterred by todays, pick up role models of behavior from todays. We need those editors of the future. We need today's editors to act better now that Wikipedia is such a large community, and Giano has been told this more times than most can count and indicated none of these expectations of the community have importance to him. These new editors need to see Wikipedia is not just about people with old grudges being allowed to perpetuate them indefinitely whilst everyone looks on idly. But this is philosophy of the matter; the issue here is "arb ruling enforcement", where the concern is, a ruling said don't do X, and X was unnecessary but wilfully done anyway. The impact on the project of allowing some editors to do things whilst other editors can't would be what harms it more. The wiki became successful in its early days because people helped others. See my prior outside comment here.

The Winter Palace

Have you any idea how to identify any othe rooms on theplan here [5] It's noyt a great plan, but it is impossible to describe such a huge place without one, in such a short space as a Wiki-page. I have to re-dras the hermitage as it is out of proportion, and many of the rooms, I could only find a 1760s plan, si have had to improvise for the things that have changed since then, but at least it gives people an idea. Thats great! There were two rooms with the military paintings. The Miltary Gallery (number 12) and the Gallery of War Paintings (number 19). The second is actually an enfilade of 4 rooms. I left you a message about the corner drawing room, I hope we are not muddling floors up, the windows should be larger to match the windows of the grander rooms - we can easily add a not to explain if this is the case, it will be easier than having three plans of three floors with just a few rooms on each - probably no problem anyway, it was common in the smaller rooms to use mezanine floors and have windows smaller in the indside than on the outside - just tio match the external faceades. The page is taking shape, I think we should concentrate on the Imperial Palace aspect, which leaves the Hermitage and museum side to be explained in the correct place on the Hermitage Museum page, if it all starts to get too long I can always create a few pages for individual rooms, once the plan is finished, we shall see the trees for the wood. • Well, it is not a violation of any rule to edit from a dynamic IP or from two different locations. On the other hand there seems to be an edit war on the Ukrainian-German_collaboration_during_World_War_II and it is very difficult to check for the 3RR compliance if anonymous edits are present. Thus, I have semiprotected the article. The anonymous can can get him (or her) self an account. IMHO we should encourage new people to make noncontroversial edits via anonymous account but all controversial staff should be made from main registered accounts Alex Bakharev (talk) 01:23, 4 April 2008 (UTC)

Russia

User:Pakhomovru appears to be new and does not understand wikipedia policy. He is using wikipedia articles as sources and keeps inserting this religion table with figures that that are directly contradicted by several sources within the article (estimates of religious adherents vary between sources). I have tried to reason with him and explain this but he does not seem to be listening and uses simply inane arguments (see talk). What would be your advice? Rezistenta

Hello. Over the past days, User:Rezistenta (formerly known as Adrianzax) has repeatedly edited the article Romanians, where he is removing tags asking for information to be checked. This began when he added text blatantly misinterpreting citations (see the hidden comments in the text), and continued when he removed all tags asking for info on numbers of Romanians to be verified - they are either not at all cited (the citation numbers lead to comments, not to sources), they misuse info (most of them speak about Romanians working abroad, who are already counted at home and are not citizens of other countries - which means that probably millions of people are counted twice), or they trace back to a source that appears to have no reliability whatsoever. These problems have been the subject of debate for over a year now, and have formed the bulk of talk page sections since - several users have also identified the problem over successive months. Rezistenta, who was already warned and blocked for similar actions, has removed both the specific and generic tags, and writes on the talk page sporadically only to harass other users. Thus, every week or so, in what seems like an attempt to make it seem like my edits come out of nowhere and that his are consensus, he repeatedly asks me "why" I want to remove the info (the info he added!) when it is "cited" etc. I don't know if this falls under WP:AN/I, but I do believe it needs admin intervention. A bot to update DYK sections of portals?

Hi Alex,

Misza13 recently did a great job creating the Wikinews Importer Bot to import items from Wikinews into Wikipedia portals and articles. Another type of bot portals could really use would be one that can update DYK sections. I was wondering if the AlexNewArtBot could be set up and/or tweaked to do that. Using selection criteria on the categories for the bolded article to add hooks to a specific DYK list was the general approach I had in mind. The good news is that a lot of code of the bot can be reused to update DYK for the project (as well as, probably, deletion sorting, GA and FA nominations, etc.). I am interested in this work. The bad news that I am busy in the real life and in three days I will have 2 week vacations in Thailand. I can indeed provide the good-faith explanation for my warning to Giano, which you said you couldn't see. Giano was engaged in writing an essay that was, at the time, laid out as "the good, the bad, and the ugly" administrators. It would be easy, given that layout, to create a page that a reasonable person thought contained personal attacks or assumptions of bad faith. So I left a very brief note reminding him to avoid that. I think the difference of viewpoint here is that I see Giano as simply another contributor to the wiki, subject to the same standards of decorum as all others. Regarding Giano's alleged incivility. Patrolling civility within interactions between editors has the only target to improve cooperation in creating encyclopedic content. I have yet to see Giano's incivility affecting article editing, obviously I will block him per Arbcom decision if he would byte new users or somehow oppress the content creation in another way. On the hand administrators are suppose to be part of the solution not being part of the problem. Actional incivility towards an admin over his or her interaction in admin capacity is a red herring something similar to a sign that only said "Danger! This sign has sharp edges".

The communication problems between editors are indeed a serious problems that is often better to be solved by communication rather than blocking. I am not sure if the editing of Giano's userpage by Wel and Carl was helpful so if could find something else to occupy your time onwiki it would be appreciated.

I am happy that putting frightening over resolved incident under the header "Why we a here" was not trolling but just an assumption on bad faith. It often happen on wikipedia. Thanks for your interest to my contributions, anyway Alex Bakharev (talk) 02:15, 17 April 2008 (UTC)

• Yes, you are right. The syntaxes of the Special:NewPages has changed once more so the bot was looking 12 times the same 250 newest pages instead of the 3000 pages. I have made a temporal workaround over this problem, so it should work now Alex Bakharev (talk) 01:50, 17 April 2008 (UTC)

The Russian Wiki in the article on Krushevan ru:Крушеван, Павел Александрович says that he published Znamya in 1903-1904 and the Russian Znamya was founded in 1905 with Krushevan being just one of the editors. So it might be that those two publications were formally independent. At that time it was quite common to slightly change the name and re-register the publications that have trouble with state censorship. E.g. Pravda (The Truth) changed its name to Put' Pravdy (The path of truth) then Golos Pravdy (The Voice of Truth), etc.

As you know, Nilus has become a respected religious figure in post-Communism Russia. Furthermore, this 2nd edition/publication of the Protocols of Zion was merely Chapter XII of his work on the Anti-Christ. I am extremely disappointed in the fact that this article on the book was deleted from Wikipedia. I think that this deleting was the result of ignorance of this fact. Ludvicus, I even not sure we need WP:DRV. Nothing was deleted the consensus of AFD was merge. No administrative action is required to undo the merge, but there should be some sort of a community consensus. Maybe and article WP:RFC should be sufficient? Alternatively we could put the missing text into a separate section of Sergei Nilus and make the Velikoe v malom i antikhrist to be a redirect to the section. I do not think many people struggle to protect the reputation of Nilus, he is mostly popular with Russian ultranationalists, and their POV is not particular represented on English wikipedia. Still. I think a good discussion of his Magna Opus might stop any attempt of a whitewashing. Have a good time on your vacation. Regarding the issue, I really believe this Opus Magnum of Nilus deserves its distinct Wiki page. Also, I think you underestimate the importance of ultranationists (I will not mention the WWII German ones who you know succeeded in their aim, in spite of their electoral minority). But also, I have substantial experience that such ultranationalist have also been whitewashing Wikipedia articles to make their views look better historically. For example, look at what's happening/happened at "Union of the Russian People" and the "Black Hundreds" articles - there is, I think, a tendency of stripping these articles of references to antisemitism - I think such edited must be driven by shame, or a desire for positive publicity (I imagine some ultranationalists find antisemitism today to be counter-productive). --Ludvikus (talk) 01:00, 19 April 2008 (UTC)

Hello. I see you've blocked user:Dilmun for allegedly being a sockpuppet of user:Islami. However, the checkuser request did not include user:Islami. Am I missing something here? Is there another checkuser page where it was proven that Islami and Dilmun were the same person? Earlier, Islami was judged to be a sockpuppet of user:Skatewalk and user:Serenesoulnyc. However, I've had dealings with both Dilmun and Skatewalk and the two have absolutely no similarity whatsoever in area of interest, editing style, or "talk page" style. It's truly inconceivable to me that they are the same person. If the indefinite block was based on an IP check then can you please show me the relevant page? And if it was instead based on a perceived similarity in "editing patterns," then can you please reassess the situation? I truly believe that you've blocked a valuable contributor whose contributions are almost always well-written and cited to impeccable sources, so I hope you will bear with me. Well, first, Dilmun is obviously a second account of an experienced user. Even his first edit is insertion of a reasonably obscure template. Secondly, both are editing from the extreme Suni positions, both like to "Arabize" people who are usually not considered as Arabs. Thirdly, both use sockpuppets abusively. Banach origins controversy

Banach was born and spent his childhood in the area populated by Rusyns and Ukrainians. In fact, his last name and the last name of his mother is a very common name among both Rusyns and Ukrainians who lived in this area for millennia.

Banach survived the Nazi occupation of Poland during the Second World war, as well as the cruel interwar regime of the dictator-ruled Poland. Under Pilsudski dictatorship, civilian freedoms were curtailed and minorities of Poland (Ukrainians, Rusyns, Germans and Jews) were oppressed and discriminated against. Many colleagues of Banach, being Jewish, suffered from anti-Semitic discrimination and were denied any chance of gainful employment in Poland ruled by the dictator Pilsudski and his cronies. Other members of minority groups, like Banach, were forced to downplay their ethnic origins and "look Polish".

The modern day resurgence of nationalism and anti-Semitism in Poland led to a controversy surrounding the coverage of the ethnic origins of Banach and other Rusyn and Ukrainian mathematicians in the literature. Decades ago, even Encyclopedia Britannica use to describe Banach as a "Soviet mathematician". Modern-day Polish chauvinists continue the Soviet and Nazi traditions of shameless lies, trying to claim Banach as a "Polish mathematician".

Is there a bot that scans articles for expansion? NewArtBot scans new articles, and proposes some for DYK, but it appears that there is no bot that scans for articles that have been expanded, say 5x or more in a day. Putin

Hi, your edits to the Putin article were misinformed. The nominal GDP increased 6 fold. You can see it on this chart (only goes to 2006). You also can learn about the difference between nominal and purchasing power parity in their respective articles. The two different figures are noted separately in the economy section as well. Also, regarding average salaries, they grew from $80 to $650. Average income of the Russian family is not the same thing as monthly salaries. All of this data was already reliably sourced so I've reverted your edits and I made more clear that its talking about average monthly salaries/nominal GDP. Krawndawg (talk) 14:01, 7 May 2008 (UTC)
