Stupid dates war on Steven Gerrard page

Linking every date on a page does absolutely nothing to help the clarity or level of information on a page. Is every date on this page linked? No. If I do 5 tildes does it give a linked date? No. Does saying "Steven Gerrard scored a goal on 4 July", which I could then click and think "hey that's American Independence Day, cool!" add anything to Steven Gerrard? No.

It's dumb. That's why I reverted all dates that weren't birthdates. The link to date format doesn't mention anything about linking every possible date. I am going to revert Steven Gerrard and leave this message on his talk page. aLii 19:21, 11 May 2006 (UTC) (note it isn't linked!!!)

The point is not whether you think it is dumb or stupid. The point is to write articles to a high standard within Wikipedia's guidelines. By formatting dates that contain days, months and years enable the program's software to sort the dates according to a user's preferences. I have already asked you to visit WP:DATE and Help:Preferences#Date_format which support my reasons. Your reasons of dumb, stupid and bold text does little to strengthen your case. Note for reference. This happened in aLii's early days at Wikipedia and was not really a war. aLii delinked all of the dates in the article not realising the style guideline and the differences that were governed in users' preferences. The sequence started with aLii's Making every date is pointless and stupid, so I reverted it followed by my Dates formatted as per WP:DATE - please see style guideline and http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Help:Preferences#Date_format rather than unformat, a revert by aLii's No edit summary, and my Revert to revision 52702752 using popups which took place during the conversation here and on that article's talk page. I don't know what you meant by your query in the FA Premier League talk page, however if it's any help, I removed the 'titles won' column several times in the past because it was widening the page causing me to horizontally scroll across. All the best. Mark272 17:56, 16 May 2006 (UTC)

Combine

I'm sorry, but I don't think the revert on the Combine (Half-Life 2) page's intro was warranted. The parts I had corrected were original research, and inaccurate to boot. The link in the original version does not actually lead to a source, and the quote in question was misinterpreted in a way that isn't grammatically correct. One of the keys to writing good encyclopedia articles is to understand that they should refer only to facts, assertions, theories, ideas, claims, opinions, and arguments that have already been published by reputable publishers. As counterintuitive as it may seem, the threshold for inclusion in Wikipedia is verifiability, not truth. Wikipedia concerns itself with verifiable information from reliable sources. If you are able to find such information in respect of matters relating to the Jimi Hendrix article (where I deleted your comment on his penis size and left you a note), I am certain that myself and all other editors would be only too happy to discuss its suitability and notability for inclusion in that article. Firstly, I want to confirm that the AIias Flood that impersonated me was not me. I am the more conventional spelling of ALias Flood The imposter has now been banned. Now onto something much more important, this article and the external links it contains. As I have stated on this talk page under External Links (below), my understanding is that the litmus test should be that the information contained in the external link should enhance or confirm the details given in the article as well as being reliable, reputable and having a degree of longevity. Fan sites, other than the main official site, and fanlistings are generally not informative and should not ordinarily be included. My view is that this should also apply to forums. WP:EL gives more details on this. I would add that I applaud the webmaster of the unofficial website in question for their dedication but, as editors, we must be careful not to let Wikipedia become a repository for links WP:NOT. If the information on a website is notable, reliable and has a high degree of permanence, then let us put it into the article and cite that url as its source. Fan websites and fanlistings, by their very nature, do not portray a neutral point of view WP:NPOV and will rarely merit inclusion in my opinion. -- Alias Flood 02:02, 6 June 2006 (UTC)

Just noticed you changed your spelling of "skillfull" → "skillful". I would still consider that wrong, as it's the American spelling. With 3 "L"s it's the US English spelling, which I can tell you might dislike. "skilful" (with just 2 "L"s) is the English version. [1]

Your note made me smile and, I confess, puzzle over the etymology of the word. I must confess to finding words a lot of fun in that our language is ever evolving which both helps and hinders communication. Hopefully the former rather than the latter. You are right, however, my normal instinctive spelling would have been for the double "l" rather than the treble "l" but I have no problem with N. American spellings; indeed, they make the language richer. As well as editing, I like to help Wikipedia by reverting vandalism and I am a recent changes patroller. In doing this, I see changes across the wide spectrum of Wikipedia along with the names or ip addresses of those that make changes. If I see someone with a name showing a red talk link, I like to welcome them and offer them some links that I have found useful in my time here. Thank you for your note and welcome to Wikipedia.

I agree that Sepp Blatter should be spelt with two Ps and I did not alter that spelling. You also changed the word "instalment" (the English spelling) to "installment" (the American spelling) which I reverted. This was my reason for referring you to our welcome page. Please also read one of our several Manuals of Style on National varieties of English. This explains that a nationally predominant form should be used in each article but there is no preference among the major national varieties of English. Disputes over style issues refers to an occasion where Wikipedia's Arbitration Committee ruled that, when either of two styles is acceptable, it is inappropriate for a Wikipedia editor to change from one style to another unless there is some substantial reason for the change. It continues by giving an example of a British spelling as opposed to American spelling, and states it would be wrong to switch simply to change styles. I am reverting the spelling to that of the previous editor and I hope that my reasons for doing this are now clearer to you.
