Gottfried

[edit]

Sorry to have reverted your edits to Gottfried von Strassburg, but they were simply not helpful, and in any case you need much better sources than a non-peer-reviewed webpage. There is a huge body of scholarship about Gottfried, and there are some good starting points under "Bibliography".

From the point of view of music history, Gottfried himself is not of interest since none of hios music survives, just the two possible lyrics. How Gottfried potrays music in his society is another matter: Tristan has a lot to tell us about how music was performed and received in a medieval court. Gottfried is one of the few writers of the period to describe musical performance in detail, and his description of the musical techniques of contemporary Minnesänger in the "literary excursus" is unique. But you can't do this without looking at the scholarship, not least because there are issues with the musical vocabulary. --Pfold (talk) 09:33, 29 September 2025 (UTC)Reply
