RFB comment

edit

Hey AO. Thanks for supporting, but just a quick note re your comment [Well, what Neil has done (oppose all reconfirmation RFAs, regardless of who is re-running) is, in a way, an equally flimsy grounded oppose.)]. If I opposed reconfirmation RFA just because I believe they are unnecessary, it would be a flimsy protest vote. But there's a deeper meaning - the fact they are unnecessary suggests to me the only reason a user would take one is to obtain a community "pat on the back" prior to regaining the sysop bit, when all the time he/she could have just requested from a bureaucrat, anyway. Unnecessary bureaucracy is anathema to me - my career IRL is based on eliminating it. Additionally, I also feel admins who care "too much" about what the community thinks of them are prone to being unstable and unreliable, and need a confirmation is evidence of that mindset. I think an admin who needs an unnecessary reconfirmation before retaking the tools is too sensitive for the role. That's why they are unnecessary. Neıl 16:20, 28 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

No, I wasn't expecting a retraction - that's fine. I just thought a little background would be informative. Cheers. Neıl 17:21, 28 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

Hi - The reason Rise and Fall wasn't credited to you is because it was credited to user:AO. Like the comment says at WP:WBFAN, direct edits generally will have very little effect (the bot recreates it from the source lists, pretty much every day). This edit will fix it permanently. -- Rick Block (talk) 01:45, 29 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

MfD

edit

Yeah, I managed to figure that out a few minutes ago. I think the problem lay in the fact that your nomination was exceedingly short and altogether too clear; my practice at XfD is to write exorbitantly long nominations that say relatively little, and surely nothing persuasive, and I am ill-suited to handle, you know, cogency. Thanks, in any case, for catching my oversight (especially since I intended later to offer at MfD some diffuse commentary on the autograph books MfD), and apologies for my failure to read more carefully. MFD Userfication

edit

Hey, I closed the discussion for Wikipedia:Miscellany_for_deletion/Wikipedia:I'm_Proud_to_be_a_Wikipedian as essentially moot but then realized you didn't actually complete the userfication - or you undid it. This was pretty well WP:SNOW for userfication. Could you delete the projectspace page? Also, did you copy the full history to userspace? I was a little unclear as to where it went in userspace, it looked like Wizardman said he created it in userspace at User:Nothing444/contest at the same time as it was nominated, which didn't make sense. Anyway, I thought about undoing my close once I realized the issues, but I think we can just get rid of the projectspace page if the history has been moved. Thanks.--Doug.(talk contribs) 05:10, 3 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

Yeah, I was curious also, so I asked. "I block blatant vandals for 29 years instead of indefinitely (technically a shorter period... and middle age usually fixes school vandals). This user in particular was vandalizing multiple pages (including a few that were deleted), so I blocked him for 29; if he wants to be unblocked, I have no problem with that as long as he decides to contribute constructively."  :) Enigma msg! 07:57, 4 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

I just started using Huggle. I think I understand the basics, but wow. This program is overwhelming. I read WP:Huggle. Now I'm viewing everything anywhere that is marked as possible vandalism. Enigma msg! 08:51, 4 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

About that IP vandal

edit

Remember how I was talking about that vandal guy on IRC? Well, I've been doing some WHOIS searches on the latest IPs (especially the 172.x.x. ranges) and some of The UPN Vandal's old ones, and I do believe it's the same guy. He is adding false info into film/TV-related articles with poor grammar, which is what he used to always do. So I put {{Ipsock}} on the IP pages, like you said. You can block them, if you like. Also, some of the articles he's currently targeting are Happy Feet, Winx Club, Dreamworks Animation, and others. You can scout out the history pages of these articles to help uncover more IPs, and check those IPs' contributions to help find more articles he's targeting. Please reply on my talk page. Thanks. --AAA! (AAAA) 14:28, 4 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

No problem. Also, since he usually uses the 172.x.x. range, do you think a range-block could work against him? --AAA! (AAAA) 12:30, 5 March 2008 (UTC)Reply
Fair enough. Also, there's another one at WP:AIV that you can deal with. --AAA! (AAAA) 12:37, 5 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

User:Puncharoo is Probably a Komodo lover Sock

edit

Hello AndonicO, I was on recent changes patrol and noticed someone posted concerns about User:Puncharoo being a Komodo lover sock. It seems fairly obvious that Puncharoo is Komodo lover, especially when this edit mentions all the topics/articles Komodo lover is notorious for adding hoax information. Your block on 172.162.202.226

This guy is a roving IP vandal who seldom shows up on the same IP twice. I think a year block is not warranted - he has already moved on to another IP so this won't effect him in any way. We need to be considering range blocks. --NrDg 16:26, 5 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

  • Thanks for your comment, but it'll be just a temporary block for a day or so because of the 2 vandals doing so many edits in just 24 hours. Blocking IPs is supposed to be a last resort since they're shared and I find vandalism warnings are useless for IPs because I've yet to encounter one that actually acknowledged reading the talk page. I feel there has been a level of vandalism to this article that warrants a block. But I will only keep it on for a couple of days and the block is only for unregistered and new users, so anybody else will be able to edit as usual in the meantime. 23skidoo (talk) 01:34, 7 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

I wanted to personally thank you, Andonico, for your support in my recent RfB. I am thankful and appreciative that you feel that I am worthy of the trust the community requires of its bureaucrats, and that you have only seen good things from my "corner"  , and I hope to continue to behave in a way that maintains your trust in me and my actions. I have heard the community's voice that they require more of a presence at RfA's of prospective bureaucrats, and I will do my best over the near future to demonstrate such a presence and allow the community to see my philosophy and practices in action. I hope I can continue to count on your support when I decide to once again undergo an RfB. If you have any suggestions, comments, or constructive criticisms, please let me know via talkpage or e-mail. Thank you again. -- Avi (talk) 15:24, 7 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

Cannon.

edit

Hello Gabbe, I was wondering if you could cite a source for this edit that you made a couple of years ago? We're getting Cannon ready for an FAC, and that looks like an interesting fact (that was recently removed, as OR). I've looked through the 2001 Guinness book, but can't find any info on the largest howitzer. Did you take that from a different edition? Sorry for inquiring about such an old edit, but thanks, regardless of whether or not you remember. · AndonicO Hail! 02:43, 8 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

That info I found in my Swedish Guinness Rekordbok 1996 (ISBN 91-37-10723-2). More specifically, on the bottom of the right column of page 204 the book says:

My personal translation of the above is:

Biggest howitzer. The biggest howitzer ever constructed is the Tsar Pushka (Emperor Cannon), which now stands on display at the Kremlin in Moscow. It was cast in the 16th century with a caliber of 920 mm and a 3,2 m long firing tube. It was supposed to fire balls at 2 tonnes, but never came to use. Its weight was 39,3 tonnes.

When the Turks in 1453 took Constantinople they fired from April 12th to May 29th up to seven shots a day against the city walls with a so-called bombarde, which was pulled by 60 oxen and 200 men. It was 8 m long, its caliber 1 066 mm, and the projectiles were stone balls weighing 540 kg.

I don't know of any English-language citation for the Tsar Cannon being the largest, but I don't think it would be too hard to find. I hope this is of some help to you! —Gabbe (talk) 13:47, 8 March 2008 (UTC)Reply
