Goran Pandev

Pandev was born in Macedonia that in 1983 was in federation with some other countries, but it is the same as you write that someone who was born in Germany, was born in the European Union —Preceding unsigned comment added by 85.18.136.96 (talk) 16:24, 30 May 2008 (UTC)

Pandev was born in the Socialist Republic of Macedonia, one of the constituent republics of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia. The Republic of Macedonia did not exist until at least 1991-09-08, when Pandev was eight years old. — Andrwsc (talk · contribs) 16:29, 30 May 2008 (UTC)
Why do you insist with this? Anyway he was born in Macedonia and that's the most important —Preceding unsigned comment added by 85.18.136.96 (talk) 18:22, 30 May 2008 (UTC)
Why do I insist on accuracy in Wikipedia? Is that a rhetorical question? — Andrwsc (talk · contribs) 18:25, 30 May 2008 (UTC)
But you insist with the Macedonian people mostly. We Macedonians have enough problems with the sick greek nationalism -talk —Preceding comment was added at 18:34, 30 May 2008 (UTC)
No, I insist on Goran Pandev because that article is on my watchlist. What other "sick greek nationalism" edits have I made? I have only ever spent a weekend vacation in Athens once, but that hardly makes me a propaganda-pusher. I live on the other side of the world. — Andrwsc (talk · contribs) 18:38, 30 May 2008 (UTC)
The "sick greek nationalism" wasn't reffered to you. Anyway, you have edited an article about the Olympics in 2004 regarding Macedonia with the name FYR Macedonia. I sad that I hope you're not one of the greek antimacedonian propaganda-pushers, and I'm glad that you're not. You see, they are doing everything and everywhere to destroy my country. Wikipedia unfortunately is one of those places. There are much more greek wikipedia administrators than macedonian administrators so we can not do anything about that. 85.18.136.96 (talk) —Preceding comment was added at 18:44, 30 May 2008 (UTC)
Well, for the Olympic articles, we consistently use "FYR Macedonia". This is consistent with WP:Manual of Style (Macedonia-related articles), since the International Olympic Committee uses "Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia" (e.g. per their website and per official reports (like this one from 1996). There is no anti-Macedonia bias involved here. If you can get the MOS changed, then that would be the only way to change the way we do things here. Editing individual articles to defy the manual of style isn't going to get you very far. — Andrwsc (talk · contribs) 18:54, 30 May 2008 (UTC)
Well, I can understand that you don't understand or don't want to understand the problems of Macedonia and the Macedonian people. Anyway we Macedonians survived for 3000 years under Greeks, Romans, Ottomans etc. and will survive for ever! 85.18.136.96 (talk) —Preceding comment was added at 19:02, 30 May 2008 (UTC)

Request for Country data

Hi
Could you create a Country data for Union of South American Nations, South America (using Unasur flag) and Africa (using African Union flag), like Template:Country data Europe uses European Union flag? I tried but I didn't understood well how it works. Thanks — Guilherme (t/c) 23:58, 1 June 2008 (UTC)

They already exist. See Template:Country data Union of South American Nations and Template:Country data African Union. — Andrwsc (talk · contribs) 04:12, 2 June 2008 (UTC)
Sorry, I didn't saw then. Anyway, no exist a Country data for Africa using the African Union flag and a Country data for South America using UNASUR flag. What do you think about create them? — Guilherme (t/c) 15:53, 2 June 2008 (UTC)
Just use {{flag|AU|name=Africa}} for   Africa and {{flag|UNASUR|name=South America}} for   South America. — Andrwsc (talk · contribs) 16:19, 2 June 2008 (UTC)
But if I want that   Africa points to Africa and   South America to South America? — Guilherme (t/c) 17:12, 2 June 2008 (UTC)

Request for Country data New Caledonia

Can you add this flag Image:New Caledonia Sports Flag.gif to Template:Country data New Caledonia? It's used in the 2007 Pacific Games. See here: Flag of New Caledonia. Chanheigeorge (talk) 21:53, 2 June 2008 (UTC)

Hmm, User:Dn9ahx claims he/she is the copyright holder of that image, of which I am skeptical. I'd like to affirm that it is not a fair-use or non-free image before putting it into the template, as other admins have removed flags under those circumstances (in other country data templates). We can only use free images in the flag template system. — Andrwsc (talk · contribs) 22:01, 2 June 2008 (UTC)
Fair enough. From this photo [1], the NCL delegation carries both the French flag and the new flag. So perhaps the French flag is still "official", but the new flag is also used "unofficially" to add some local identity. Chanheigeorge (talk) 22:14, 2 June 2008 (UTC)
Oh yeah, I'm sure that's the case, and it makes perfect sense to add it to the template—but only if we don't violate WP:Non-free content by doing so. Just some clarification is required. We had to change the games variant from Template:Country data Gotland for precisely this reason. — Andrwsc (talk · contribs) 22:19, 2 June 2008 (UTC)

NATO flags and symbols

Hi,

Where does it say that the NATO flag and NATO/ISAF symbols are only to be used on pages of NATO and ISAF? I haven't seen any rules that say it can't be used on other NATO-related pages such as military engagements involving NATO or ISAF. - Realismadder (talk) 12:04, 3 June 2008 (UTC)

Check the image page itself, at Image:Flag of NATO.svg. (Scroll down under the large image.) That image had to be removed from Commons, as it is non-free. Therefore, on each Wikipedia (en.wiki et. al.), it can only be used for specific articles that have a reasonable fair-use rationale, and those can be found on the image page. Also, per Wikipedia:Non-free content, there are restrictions on image location, such as mainspace articles only. As for the ISAF logo image, there is a deletion debate on Commons for that image, so it likely falls under the same restrictions as the NATO flag. Even if it doesn't, the logo should not be used as a flag substitute in infoboxes per WP:Manual of Style (flags). — Andrwsc (talk · contribs) 16:04, 3 June 2008 (UTC)

Croatia at Olympics before competing for Yugoslavia

This is a historical fact but let me remind you that for every socialist republic of the former SFRY there is listed see Yugoslavia throught the entire period.

Also for the soviet socialist republics within USSR.

Have those edits been referenced for each and every Olympic games? I do not see such reference.

Croatia had been a part of Austro-Hungarian Monarchy, see the title of the Emperor of Austria.

Also this http://www.croatianhistory.net/etf/sportet.html article clearly reference the fact of Croats participating in the Austrian, Hungarian, Italian and even English teams.

Imbris (talk) 21:50, 4 June 2008 (UTC)

That's a fairly lame reference. It confuses ethnicity with participating teams, such as Paul Radmilovic, an ethic Croat born in the United Kingdom who competed for Great Britain at the Olympics. But it also makes a good point about Milan Neralić, whose medal is attributed to Austria. I certainly don't think we should use this website as a reference for the article, but I also agree that your edit is appropriate, given this information. It would be nice to find a comparable athlete as Neralić who competed for Hungary, or perhaps those table cells should only read "See Austria". — Andrwsc (talk · contribs) 22:36, 4 June 2008 (UTC)

Flags

I found very difficult to understand why there can be Template:SCO and not Template:VEC for Veneto. Kind regards. --Checco (talk) 07:14, 5 June 2008 (UTC)

Because SCO is a standard country code (List of FIFA country codes) widely used by many people, and VEC is something you invented yourself. — Andrwsc (talk · contribs) 07:16, 5 June 2008 (UTC)
Ok, thank you. --Checco (talk) 07:17, 5 June 2008 (UTC)
No worries. Sorry if I came across heavy-handed; I didn't mean to. We have a consensus at WP:WikiProject Flag Template to stick with standard (ISO 3166-1 alpha-3, FIFA, IOC) three letter codes for "shortcut" templates like {{USA}} and {{ITA}}, because many people are familiar with those codes, but use the generic {{flag}} template for the other thousand or so flags that we have templates for. It is impossible to remember what to use when new "codes" are invented. Personally, I prefer to use {{flag}} for everything—I find it much easier to read wikicode with {{flag|Algeria}} instead of {{DZA}}, for example. Even some of the standard codes are obscure! — Andrwsc (talk · contribs) 07:21, 5 June 2008 (UTC)

I understand, but why do we use FIFA country codes: FIFA is simply a wolrd soccer organization! And, anyway, we have also templates about entities which don't have a FIFA country code, take for example Template:IOT. --Checco (talk) 07:24, 5 June 2008 (UTC)

Well, there are tens of thousands of football-related pages on Wikipedia, and the WP:WikiProject Football folks like to use SCO. As for IOT, that is an ISO code, so that's why the template exists. To be honest, the latter is a perfect example of one of the obscure standard codes. I think it is clearer for editors to see {{flag|British Indian Ocean Territory}} in an article instead of having to look up what IOT stands for, even though {{IOT}} is only 7 keystrokes. — Andrwsc (talk · contribs) 07:30, 5 June 2008 (UTC)
Ok, it has been very interesting to see how these things work: today I learned something which is very useful to know, but I agree with you that using {{flag}} for everything would be the best and simplest solution. Kind regards. --Checco (talk) 07:32, 5 June 2008 (UTC)
Thanks, and happy editing! — Andrwsc (talk · contribs) 07:34, 5 June 2008 (UTC)

Lighten up friend. I prodded that page because it was entirely empty, it didn;t say anything other than CHile competed at the 1956 olympics. You make out as if I don't greatly appreciate your work on the olympics which I greatly do. Whatever you think about geo stubs these will contain information and whether it takes 15 months to expand or 15 minutes them it is still a step that wikipedia has to take. Stop your bashing and offending me

You have stated that I hate some ethnicity on the basis of what. On the basis of using the data that you do not use. Stop this tactic of better and worse sources. Like the Security Council of the United Nations which in defiance of its decision that FRY is not the successor of the SFRY list that Serbia had sitted in the Security Concil under the name of Yugoslavia. Lots of sources falsely claim such nonsense. And when I use the sources that further the historical significance of Serbian Olympic Committee you still object and claim of ruining your articles as if those articles are your personal property. Please stop with your claims based on one secondary source only. -- Imbris (talk) 00:06, 17 June 2008 (UTC)

Tokelau flag

You beat me to the creation of the newly adopted Tokelau flag on Commons. However, both the image distributed by the Flag Research Center and the one seen here clearly show your rendition is slightly off: the flag does not bear a solid line at the bottom, but rather a stylised boat hull. There should be a wedge of background colour underneath th ehoits part of that line, as well as a trailing yellow line joining the "sail" to the fly side. Please correct the svg as much as possible (until official specs become available). Urhixidur (talk) 14:45, 19 June 2008 (UTC)

Oh yeah, you also got the proportions wrong: according to the Flag Research Center, they are 5:3. Urhixidur (talk) 14:50, 19 June 2008 (UTC)

I'm not very talented with image editing; I only created that SVG image so that we had a PD replacement for the jpg image that had been lifted directly from that website and uploaded to en.wiki. I only had that jpg as a visual guide, so the proportions, placement of stars, etc. was all eyeballed from that low resolution image. Feel free to edit the SVG I put on Commons to make any corrections and then re-upload. I will not mind at all! Thanks — Andrwsc (talk · contribs) 14:54, 19 June 2008 (UTC)

{{tls|Smile}}

Thank you for your help! This is what I have been trying to get at for a long time. :)--Thecurran (talk) 13:10, 26 June 2008 (UTC)

Thank you for holding off a little on altering my edits. I appreciated it. I also like that you moved the Pakistani flag templates I put up rather than deleting them. I feel they definitely should exist here, identifying sizeable portions of the world's population and having widespread traditions of their own. BTW, I put a nowiki around the smile tag I left above because you said it was annoying.

I am interested in following ISO 3602 and other ISO romanizations for subdivisional names on ISO pages in particular and creating the appropriate aliases within templates in general. What do you think of this?  :)--Thecurran (talk) 15:30, 7 July 2008 (UTC)

I really don't know what you mean here—could you offer an example? With respect to flag templates specifically, please don't use any abbreviations. That's why I renamed the Pakistan ones, for example. The alias value within the template should almost always point to the main en.wiki article for the country/state/etc., and the template name should also match this (unless it has a disambiguation qualifier, for example). Thanks — Andrwsc (talk · contribs) 19:26, 9 July 2008 (UTC)

I mean, for example, if the official ISO transliteration of a place like "Kōchi" turns out to be "Kôti", that second spelling should be an acceptable way to access the flag. I added the page, Template:Country data Kôti, and redirected it to the page, Template:Country data Kōchi Prefecture, where I added the term, Kôti, as the redir2. This is in line with ISO 3602, the standard Romanization of Japanese. We already do this in many circumstances and I think it the most appropriate way to deal with Mumbai / Bombay type ambiguities. :)--Thecurran (talk) 09:24, 13 July 2008 (UTC)

Sure, that's fine. That's the right way of doing it. Thanks for documenting these aliases in the "parent" country_data template (with redirN = ..., but could you also please add them to Category:Country data redirects? For example, put [[Category:Country data redirects|Kôti]] on the line after #REDIRECT [[Template:Country data Kōchi Prefecture]] and so on. Thanks — Andrwsc (talk · contribs) 20:46, 15 July 2008 (UTC)

Good point, there. I will try that out soon. Do you know if there's a way to create a bot to do things like that by following redirects on new pages and then editing the "empty" page to put it in its appropriate redirect category? I don't know much about bots or other automations for Wiki-editing. :)--Thecurran (talk) 08:17, 21 July 2008 (UTC)

Template:Fbu

Hey, I haven't made a template in years so I wouldn't know where to start, but the Fbu template is very confusing right now. It only outputs   Switzerland which is entirely indistinguishable from   Switzerland, so on the bottom of a player's infobox who has played in both youth and full national teams, it's kind of confusing. Is there any way you could make the first variable also output in the piped link, like this: Switzerland U-21? ugen64 (talk) 20:28, 7 July 2008 (UTC)

The name parameter does that, like {{fbu|21|SUI|name=Switzerland U-21}} for    Switzerland U-21 or you could use {{fbu|21|SUI}} U-21 for    Switzerland U-21. — Andrwsc (talk · contribs) 16:50, 9 July 2008 (UTC)

Ok, thanks! The WP:WikiProject Olympics goal is fairly ambitious, and we don't have a lot of editors regularly working on it. We want to document the results of every competitor in every event in every Games. A lot of articles are still stubs, but I would say that we have the foundation and framework in place. I think WP:Don't demolish the house while it's still being built applies very well, as you can probably appreciate through your similar work on geographic articles. Thanks — Andrwsc (talk · contribs) 16:41, 23 July 2008 (UTC)

I understand completely. Sorry if we clashed before, not intended at all. As for that GEOBOT thing, we are creating lists of places rather than seperate sub stubs to save creating a major problem later. I know what a burden it is even starting the article let alone filling every article fully particularly when there are few editors working on them. I've got a back log of about 20,000 French communes to bring even up to basic status! Keep up the good work. I'm looking forward to the olympics but it makes me wonder what effect the pollution will have on the competitors. The smog in Beijing really is bad. Best ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 17:16, 23 July 2008 (UTC)

No worries! I wouldn't call our exchanges "clashes", but it certainly helps me understand where you are coming from when you write longer messages! As for Beijing, I'm also looking forward to the Games very much, especially swimming. I've been to Beijing 4–5 times, and yeah, it's a very dirty place. Hello Andrwsc. Would you revert the IP's edits at those pages. I'm still within 24hrs of my last 3 reverts - and don't want to breach 3RR. GoodDay (talk) 21:06, 18 July 2008 (UTC)

To be honest, I'm ok with the latest edits of both articles. On the Canadiens article, he's put "...in the NHL" instead of "...in professional hockey". The referenced statement that follows that claim only mentions the NHL and no other professional leagues, so unless we add referenced comparisons to other leagues, I think his version is better. I don't really like the wording on either version of the CSKA page—the "one of the most, if not the most," phrase is a peacock word we ought to avoid—so I don't see any value in reverting it right now until we can get some better wording by consensus. — Andrwsc (talk · contribs) 21:20, 18 July 2008 (UTC)

Thanks in advance. Mussav (talk) 13:38, 19 July 2008 (UTC)

The display name is simply "Kurdistan" because that seems to be the most common name for the team. For example, the main VIVA website here calls the team just "Kurdistan". Googling for "VIVA Kurdistan" shows several other websites that refer to the team by just the one word and not the full "Iraqi Kurdistan". — Andrwsc (talk · contribs) 23:05, 19 July 2008 (UTC)

This team has nothing to do with Turkey, Iran, Armenia or Syria, this team represent the Iraqi Federal region "Iraqi Kurdistan".

The Iraqi Kurdish teams represented Iraq as whole as well in other tournaments such like the 2007 King's Cup. This is not the first time they represent the region or the country. Kurdistan team is Kurdistan team and Iraqi Kurdistan is Iraqi Kurdistan, Besides there is no real Kurdistan team based in anywhere, only the Iraqi Kurdistan team. Medalists on Olympics pages

I like your upgrade to the medalists table. Right now, I'd have to figure out how best to use it. The table I've been using lately I have set up in an Excel file - which makes entering the names, etc. really easy. Adding the link to the specific event in addition to the sport would make things more difficult but it would help solve one issue where different country pages were calling events different things. Technically, I'm not necessarily "back". I've been really struggling with reconciling some of the behinds-the-scenes Wikimania stuff happening lately to where I haven't wanted to devote to much time to the volunteer cause of Wikipedia, but with the Olympics approaching I have been doing stuff here on there mostly on the U.S. 2008 Olympic page but also on other pages. --Sue Anne (talk) 06:23, 20 July 2008 (UTC)

Re: Unprotection of Category:Country data templates

Yes, the unprotection was automated. The threshold I used was 50 or fewer transclusions. east really shouldn't have fully-protected all of the Country_data templates without checking the number of transclusions first. I would be inclined to tag the templates directly, but if you'd like, I can pretty easily update any lists that need updating if you prefer to keep the tag automatic.

I'll be doing further (unrelated to Country_data) unprotections in the near future. It seems we have quite a few indefinitely fully-protected templates with very few transclusions. Some of the Country_data templates were only transcluded once, to their own template page. Oh, and my apologies if I flooded your watchlist. : - ) Cheers. --MZMcBride (talk) 22:01, 21 July 2008 (UTC)

Thanks for your input on the mu/micron question. Per your suggestion, I've filed a request at Wikipedia:Bot requests; would you be willing to help if possible? Nyttend (talk) 00:24, 28 July 2008 (UTC)

Sure. I'm not a bot writer, but I can help anyway. I don't know if User:Buaidh is the only one who created "Greek mu redirects", but helpfully, Buaidh documented them all. I've mined User:Buaidh/Contributions and put together a list of changes, at User:Andrew/mu to micron. That should help any bot writer see what needs to be done! Hope this helps, — Andrwsc (talk · contribs) 00:41, 28 July 2008 (UTC)

2000 Summer Olympics medal count

As a major contributor to the review, could you return to this featured list candidate and reassess it please? The Rambling Man (talk) 07:29, 28 July 2008 (UTC)

RE:Singapore Olympic history

Ah thanks for the sources, for I was actually trying to reconcile the fact that the SNOC history page similarly talks about one athlete in the 1948 games yet lists five individuals in the athletes list. I will tweak these gradually, and hopefully start adding data for other Asian nations first (since Asian articles tend not to be edited first ;)) Btw, do we generally include both a list of athletes as well as results won, or only the later?--Huaiwei (talk) 05:34, 30 July 2008 (UTC)

I would say that the target completion level for the "Nation at the year Olympics" articles is to have a complete set of results for all competitors, arranged by event. To be honest, we haven't really converged on a standard style yet. Most of these articles are woefully incomplete, and the majority that have results (complete or partial) use simple list markup (e.g. Austria at the 2000 Summer Olympics). We've started to use table formatting for these pages, and the results look a lot better. An example of a "completed" article for a "small" team (13 competitors in 5 sports) is British West Indies at the 1960 Summer Olympics, and I also like what is being done for Great Britain at the 2008 Summer Olympics. Shall we mark you down as a new member of WP:WikiProject Olympics?  ;) — Andrwsc (talk · contribs) 16:17, 30 July 2008 (UTC)
Oh my so I am obviously not the only one who has always found the list markups a headache to read and edit! I am very "pro-table" for the sake of visual clarity, and I would certainly love to participate in the "standards establishment" phase and help convert and build up the said data in more articles. And many thanks for the invite. I am now a part of this joint project, and what a great time to start with less than 10 days to go before the flame lights up again! :D--Huaiwei (talk) 17:11, 30 July 2008 (UTC)
I'm glad to hear that you also like the table formatting, so it would be great if you could add that to as many articles as you care to work on. It's amusing to the Olympics WikiProject "regulars" to see a huge spike in editing these articles every time a new Games comes around! Hopefully you will stay some time afterwards and help us continue the task. And yes, we had hoped to have more standard format guidelines in place before the "newbies" joined the fray, but alas, too much work and too little time. WP:There is no deadline? Hmmph. — Andrwsc (talk · contribs) 17:19, 30 July 2008 (UTC)
Heh I should be around for a longer period time, since it is unlikely that the Olympic fever will erode until at least the 2010 games in Singapore. ;) Just kidding, but yeah, I do have had some prior frustration when I wrote articles like Singapore at the 2005 Southeast Asian Games and Singapore at the 2006 Asian Games, and I have always wondered if no one is going to consider coming up with a more palatable format. Before I go ahead to begin conversion, I wonder if there are intentions to formally initiate (or re-initiate) efforts to establish some kindof table markup standard or something any time soon, so as to avoid having to go through the articles to convert them again? Now may be a good time, since as you predicted, there will be a spike in editing activity very soon. I don't mind helping to kickstart the discussion (but probably have to do it later tomorrow) if need be.--Huaiwei (talk) 17:37, 30 July 2008 (UTC)
I'm composing a message to the project talk page at the moment, proposing the 2008 GBR page style be used, so hopefully the discussion will pick up from there. — Andrwsc (talk · contribs) 17:42, 30 July 2008 (UTC)

Albania/Olympics

An IP user added Albania to the 1972 Summer Olympics medal count. I checked the Olympic and Olympicdatabase website and neither listed it, so I reverted the user. He then added a section to Albania's 1972 Olympic page saying a Ymer Pampuri won a gold in weightlifting. I did some googling and a couple articles actually do say that such a person won a gold. However, I can't find anything reliable. Do you know anything about this? Was he stripped of a medal or something? -- Scorpion0422 02:26, 1 August 2008 (UTC)

Never mind, according to the Olympics report he finished ninth in his event, but broke the Olympic record and led the competition briefly. -- Scorpion0422 02:35, 1 August 2008 (UTC)
Yeah, I've been watching the medal count pages for a couple of years, ever since I reformatted the tables and went through every Olympic report and double-checked the numbers. Any changes to the numbers ought to be challenged as suspicious, and the official reports are readily available to look things up. I completed Albania at the 1972 Summer Olympics just in case the anon. goes back and tries to make that claim again. The article is now referenced with the final results of all 5 athletes. — Andrwsc (talk · contribs) 04:27, 1 August 2008 (UTC)
