editThe image at this website as uploaded to Commons can't be used by us I'm afraid, as it is assumed that the owners of the site in question hold copyright. It will almost certainly be removed from Commons shortly. That's the bad news. No big deal. The good news is that you can upload as many of your own photos as you like if you allow them to be freely used by everyone else. So, you can upload some appropriate pics of Effin to Commons which can then be added to the article. Take it one step at a time, and try not to get discouraged. We're all trying to build the best encyclopedia we can, including the article about Effin. I have this page 'on watch' so you can post any replies here. Best. Effin
editWelcome to Wikipedia editing, I hope you enjoy the experience. May I offer a few words of advice to orient you?
Firstly, the encyclopaedia is designed to explain matters and it is read internationally, therefore we must assume that most readers are not Irish. This means we sometimes need to spell things out for foreigners that do not require explanation for Irish readers. I am thinking in particular of your edit to remove the word "fucking" from the Effin article because you "do not like the work Fucking on this page", as you said in your edit summary. It is important to note that the encyclopaedia contains material that some may find offensive, but it is not a censored work and, indeed, there are lengthy and detailed articles explaining the meaning, origin, and cultural context of all the major swear words. I have reversed your edit to restore the helpful explanation that "effin" is a euphemism for fucking, something not widely known to foreigners, especially all those whose English is non-native: consider the Mexican, Japanese, or Finnish reader. Angeldharma (talk) 09:23, 17 February 2012 (UTC) ok i get your point but about people not understanding the meaning. so why not put link to the dictionary to explain what effin means. It was not mentioned in the BBC article but it was in tabliod papers.
Secondly, your enthusiasm to broaden the article is welcome but please bear in mind that material should be added only if it is genuinely notable, and if you can include reliable and verifiable sources to support any claim of notability. Notability does not mean that a person was well-known in Effin, or that he "did very well for himself" in his career, but that he or she had fame beyond the locality that can be verified. It is not enough to be a colourful local personality as Wikipedia is not a parish newsletter.
Angeldharma (talk) 09:23, 17 February 2012 (UTC)The people I've mentioned under Sports are already on wiki i just linked them. Bishop Riordan would be a noted person in Limerick and in Sierra Leone where he worked until civil war broke out. Rhambling Thady is also a well known journalist and contributor to Limerick Leader during his lifetime. Brother Stephen Russell is rememberd also and was interviewed by Gay Byrne on Late Late show and was a colourful character but I didn't go into that.
As it stands, there is much in the article that any editor could remove on the basis that it is too parochial and not genuinely notable, no matter how much local people may revere the material. I have not weeded the article of its non-notable material simply because I am generally biassed in favour of including rather than omitting material unless it is egregiously trivial or parochial (thus, I am an inclusionist); and because I have not felt motivated to clean the whole rather lengthy article; it is already quite long for a locality with only 1,000 people in it, so do not be surprised or upset if other editors take an axe to the article at some point. Therefore, it would be advisable not to waste too much time adding material that could be successfully challenged for insufficient notability at a future date, and removed as a consequence. Angeldharma (talk) 09:23, 17 February 2012 (UTC) I am interested in local history and facts and there are some facts about Effin missing from Article but will leave untill another day.
Let me know if you have any questions; you can reply here if you do. By the way, where did you find the picture of the football team? Good luck. — O'Dea (talk) 03:07, 10 February 2012 (UTC) Angeldharma (talk) 09:23, 17 February 2012 (UTC) ref photo is of Effin hurling team taken at county final is my own photo that I uploaded. thanks for your advice and help.
Necessity of reliable sources.
editHello Angeldharma. I hate to nag but it is important to remind you again (as I suggested in February, above) that information added to an article requires reliable and verifiable sources to confirm its validity to prevent it being deleted at a later date. Can you please find sources to back up the two statements in the Effin article that you added a few days ago, and which I have flagged with "citation needed" statements? Thank you. — O'Dea (talk) 07:44, 24 April 2012 (UTC)
