Scottish Civil War

Hi, good work on the SCW battles. Just want to make one point though, the Covenanters were not the same thing as the English parliamentarians. they were allied to them from 1643-1647, but then fought against them from 1648-51. Also, recent studies have cast a lot of doubt on Montrose's "military genius", which was given a lot of spin by the Royalist camp at the time. Almost all his troops were actually commanded by Alasdair MacColla - Irish Confederates and anti Campbell clans. Montrose was unable to raise any of these men without MacColla. Whats more, when Montrose fell out with MacColla in 1646, he was pretty quickly routed and forced into exile. And MacColla was not even a real Royalist, he took his orders (politically speaking) from his clan chief, Randall MacDonald, earl of Antrim and then from the Irish Confederate's Supreme Council. I suppose the point I'm making is that the Scottish war was in a lot of ways a thing in itself, rather than an extension of the war in England. Anyway, well done, Jdorney

Yes, those royalist casualties do look very low, and yes, there probably is a bit of royalist propaganda there. However, the royalist losses at Tippermuir, Aberdeen and Inverlochy probably were very small. One thing to be aware of is that in warfare at the time, far more casualties werre usually inflicted in pursuit of a beaten enemy than in the actual face to face fighting. The side with the least discipline and training would break and run first, losing all cohesion as a group and no longer being able to defend themselves. The side pursuing them could cut them down in very large numbers with very little loss to themselves. This is exactly what happened at these three battles, so the very low royalist losses are plausible. In a battle where there was hard fighting before one side broke such as Aldearn, the winning side would take more casualties, but still their losses would be far smaller than the army that was broken and pursued. Losses would be more equal in a battle -such as the Boyne or Culloden - where the losing side had their retreat covered by a disciplined rearguard, preventing the pursuit or "execution" as it was called at the time.

One other point re unaccounted for royalist casualties. they could well have been un-reported battlefield losses, but they could also have been disease victims - there was a plague in scotland from 1645-49 - or deserters. A lot of Montrose's highland troops tended to go home after a battle and did not want to fight far away from their home areas and others were only there because they had been intimidated into joining in the first place.

Time Cube

Glad to see someone is trying to do some sane editing of the Time Cube article. I think the screen grab is a great idea. Please continue adding (or subtracting - I'm still dubious as to the merit of including the "race and religion" material) material. Hopefully we can get a fairly good article in place soon.
