I'm an administrator at Northern Michigan University and the only Wikipedia page I contribute to is the NMU page. Since June it's been flagged as needing sources. Can you tell me what needs a source and is the NMU website a legitimate 3rd party source?

I have generally avoided creating reference links to www.nmu.edu since it might be perceived as yet another PR flack whitewashing their company's article. While I want NMU to be perceived in the best light, I'm not interested in adding anything that violates the NPOV. That's icky, and besides, there are multiple regular editors who update the NMU article. My changes would get reverted within minutes.

Thanks in advance.

Please leave me feedback here,--AnneStark 16:29, 9 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

Hi Anne! I think the helpme above is in reference to this comment. I'll do my best to answer it. As to the reference tag, Frog47 added it, so you could ask directly on his/her talk page. I suspect that Frog47 didn't have a problem with any one claim in the article, but some independent sources, such as a book or article publishing by an entity other than the university or Michigan university system, would lend the article credence. Failing that, self-published sources such as the book already referenced or the website you mentioned are OK for Wikipedia, as long as other sources don't contradict them. The website might not be a third-party source, but the student newspaper is at least a little closer.
As to the NPOV issue, we have a conflict of interest guideline, that discourages editing where a conflict of interest exists, but sanctions it where discussion and care are undertaken to ensure that a neutral POV is upheld. The first suggestion of that guideline, btw, is to openly identify any conflict of interest, which you've already done. Kudos. Anyway, who more knowledgeable about the university than someone directly connected to it? Hope that answers your questions. Put the {{helpme}} tag back up if you have any more queries. Cheers.--Chaser - T 02:11, 29 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

Northern Michigan University

edit

I saw your note at the new user helpdesk about improving and contributing images to a university article. I'm guessing you're talking about the Northern Michigan University article (call it a hunch). Anyways, you can upload images that the university own and is willing license under GDFL with no problems (I would recommend uploading them to m:Wikimedia then). If the University wishes to remain in control of the images, then you can just call the usage under fair use and license them with {{promotional}} or {{promophoto}}. I wish more schools would take the stance your school is. Be sure to never turn the page into a marketing tool, or add items that can't be verified. No doubt NMU is the best school, but unless another respectable source (US News Rankings) says so, you can't put it on the page. If you have questions, just ask. There are plenty of nice people here to help. And if you do step over the line by accident, it's not a big deal as others will surely help you get it to a more appropriate tone. Good luck. Thanks for uploading File:NMU sig-color.jpg. The image has been identified as not specifying the copyright status of the image, which is required by Wikipedia's policy on images. Even if you created the image yourself, you still need to release it so Wikipedia can use it. If you don't indicate the copyright status of the image on the image's description page, using an appropriate copyright tag, it may be deleted some time in the next seven days. If you made this image yourself, you can use copyright tags like {{PD-self}} (to release all rights), {{self|CC-by-sa-3.0|GFDL}} (to require that you be credited), or any tag here - just go to the image, click edit, and add one of those. If you have uploaded other images, please verify that you have provided copyright information for them as well.

For more information on using images, see the following pages:

This is an automated notice by STBotI. For assistance on the image use policy, see Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. NOTE: once you correct this, please remove the tag from the image's page. STBotI (talk) 19:41, 26 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

Orphaned non-free image (Image:Wildcat-logo.gif)

edit

Thanks for uploading Image:Wildcat-logo.gif. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. Skier Dude (talk) 01:33, 8 April 2009 (UTC)Reply

Since you've reverted one of my edits without even bothering to use an edit summary, surely you're going to discuss in the article's Talk page your reasoning, right? ElKevbo (talk) 13:52, 17 May 2011 (UTC)Reply

Not sure if I'm supposed to reply here or on your talk page. In the middle of a busy day, got derailed by other projects as I was editing. I did not mean to slight you, just took some extra time to find the right references. There are additional citations on the Northern Michigan University article now AnneStark (talk) 14:41, 17 May 2011 (UTC).Reply

Please reply on the article's Talk page. And specifically address why that information - a listing of student leaders - should belong in that encyclopedia article. Thanks! ElKevbo (talk) 14:52, 17 May 2011 (UTC)Reply
