Here's another bit of advice: Apartments are quite expensive here, (especially given the current state of the economy) so be prepared for sticker shock, and do not trade down to a dangerous neighborhood simply to save money. If you're from London however, then things won't appear that expensive to you, especially apartments. Avoid going out REALLY late at night unless you have to, especially in bad neighborhoods (that doesn't mean you can't have fun, though, no need to be paranoid, just cautious), and when you are out, keep your wallet really close, as NYC is also well-known for its pickpockets. Make yourself familiar with the locals and don't be afraid to ask questions (New Yorkers can be very nice people despite what you may have heard, not all of them are rude jerks). Wherever you're from, just remember that New York is a huge melting pot of cultures, you will have absolutely no trouble fitting in or finding someone to relate to.
