Fictional characters get articles, too

edit

I know the idea that pop icons get lengthy articles (Taylor Swift) is irritating, but did you know that fictional characters can end up with articles, too? And not just Sherlock Holmes (who averages more than 160,000 views per month). For the daytime soap opera Days of our Lives, this list article has links to the actors and to the fictional characters they portray: List of Days of Our Lives cast members. There is a pejorative term 'fancruft' (see Wikipedia:Fancruft) used by editors who opine that one person's all-important addition to an article is trivia or worse. One side says to be succinct; the other side points out than an electronic encyclopedia wastes no paper. Anyway, just thought you would enjoy. David notMD (talk) 02:50, 5 January 2019 (UTC)Reply

Dang. You got me all excited and I almost came out of retirement to do a page on Race Bannon. It was already done. :( Architecttype (talk) 12:04, 5 January 2019 (UTC)Reply

Page/Pages parameter in citation templates.

edit

Hi Architecttype. A belated Happy 2019 to you!

Just for reference, the |page/pages= parameter used in citation templates like {{cite book}}, etc. is for citing the actual page or pages in the source which support the relevant article content; it's not for citing the total number of pages in the source work itself. Sometimes a url can be formatted to open directly to the desired page, but the page number(s) further helps guide readers to the actual location in the source when the url cannot formatted as such or when no url is provided.

Sources basically only needed to be reliable and published, but the latter doesn't only mean "available online". So, you can use WP:SAYWHEREYOUREADIT to cite published reliable sources which cannot be found online if you like; you can even use most citation templates to do so. The only citation template which actually requires |url= parameter is {{cite web}}. -- Marchjuly (talk) 20:39, 6 January 2019 (UTC)Reply

Yeah. I saw both 'page' and 'pages' in citations. I tried to do it a couple of times, but it keep barfing at me. I figured somebody might catch and correct it. I've been wrapping up a few loose ends on the pages I've already done and then I will be gone. Thanks for all your help.Architecttype (talk) 20:52, 6 January 2019 (UTC)Reply
Just for reference, |page= will format the citation for a single cited page, while |pages= will format the citation for a range of pages. Usually, but not always, the workings of the template parameters can be found on its Wikipedia page. — Marchjuly (talk) 21:46, 6 January 2019 (UTC)Reply
