Wikipedia in Levantine Arabic
editHello! Sorry for the cold message. I noticed you are an experienced editor, especially with subjects related to the Levant. We are trying to initiate some work around a version of Wikipedia in Levantine Arabic. If you or anyone you know could be interested please let us know. Any help or pointers would be really appreciated. CC: @FunLater @A455bcd9 - TheJoyfulTentmaker (talk) 21:07, 15 January 2024 (UTC)
- Hey TheJoyfulTentmaker. It does sounds like a nice idea, but Im not sure how it will be realized considering the fragmentation of the Levant leading to 4 main dialects. Hence, unlike Egyptian Arabic, you will have a conflict between different editors on which dialect should represent Levantine Arabic: Syrian, Lebanese, Palestinian and Jordanian. I would be more than happy to help though.--Attar-Aram syria (talk) 10:00, 20 January 2024 (UTC)
- Hello, I'm a native speaker from Lebanon and have been contributing a little to the wiki for a few months. Regarding variations between Levantine's dialects, I don't think it's a big issue, as long as all Levantine Arabic speakers can understand what is written. Maybe we should add rules against changing words to one's own dialect later.
- Here's an incomplete to-do list of things contributors (including me) need to do:
- Find more potential contributors.
- Proofread, improve, and complete the most-needed interface translations (complete guide)
- Improve the current pages (translate more sections and improve the grammar and style)
- Improve the MoS
- Should ع be connected to other words when it means على, as in ع البيت? How about هـ, as in هالبيت? Should the و be connected to other words, as in أنا و إنتا?
- Should we add an alif after the و in plural words? Should we write حملوها or حملوا? Should we write حملوه or حملو?
- Do we use ١٢٣ or 123?
- Should we use پ for P? Should we use ڤ for V? Should we use گ/ݣ for hard Gs, such as the G in go and إنگليزي, or غ/ج/ك? If we add non-MSA letters, what would the ABCs be?
- Should we use كانون الأول or ينيار or جانيواري or جانڤيا?
- Writing more pages.
- Would you be interested in joining a group on Discord (or another platform) for the Levantine wiki if I make one? FunLater (talk) 16:36, 20 January 2024 (UTC)
- Hi @Attar-Aram syria! Thanks again for offering help with this project. If you are still interested, we have set up a Discord Server for the Levantine Arabic Wikipedia. If you have time, your participation would be very valuable. TheJoyfulTentmaker (talk) 05:08, 21 February 2024 (UTC)
