Well done on achieving Featured status on Bruce Kingsbury! I believe the following is in order:
The Writer's Barnstar | ||
For his extradorinary work in bringing the article Bruce Kingsbury from Start Class all the way up to Featured Article, I take great pride in awarding Backslash Forwardslash The Writer's Barnstar. Well done! Cheers, Abraham, B.S. (talk) 05:39, 31 January 2009 (UTC) |
- No worries; you deserve it. Lol, that's always the delemma, what to do next. Cheers, Abraham, B.S. (talk) 07:27, 31 January 2009 (UTC)
- Lol, I already intended to do all of those. Cheers, Abraham, B.S. (talk) 22:18, 31 January 2009 (UTC)
- Lol! Okay, will do, but would you mind if I pinched a copy of the box to put in a section of my user space as well? It's okay if you say no, it's just so we each have a copy and know ruffly where we are at. Also, have you seen the AIF Project website? It was constructed by members of the Australian Defence Force Academy, and adds details of everyone who served in the AIF during the First World War by examining their service records. It provides a quite valuable source at times; here's the entry on Birks. Cheers, Abraham, B.S. (talk) 22:50, 31 January 2009 (UTC)
- Thanks! Please feel free (in other words, please do ;)) update my copy when applicable. Cheers, Abraham, B.S. (talk) 22:59, 31 January 2009 (UTC)

There we go; it's in my own little section of user space now. I re-ordered the lists of names in my box so they are listed alphabetically down the column rather than by row, and have also added a section below the box to detail what's done and who's working on what. Welcome!
Hi, and welcome to the Military history WikiProject! As you may have guessed, we're a group of editors working to improve Wikipedia's coverage of topics related to military history.
A few features that you might find helpful:
- Our navigation box points to most of the useful pages within the project.
- The announcement and open task box is updated very frequently. You can watchlist it if you're interested; or, you can add it directly to your user page by including {{WPMILHIST Announcements}} there.
- Most important discussions take place on the project's main discussion page; it is highly recommended that you watchlist it.
- The project has several departments, which handle article quality assessment, detailed article and content review, writing contests, article logistics, and other tasks.
- We have a number of task forces that focus on specific topics, nations, periods, and conflicts.
- We've developed a style guide that covers article structure and content, template use, categorization, and many other issues of interest.
- If you're looking for something to work on, there are many articles that need attention, as well as a number of review alerts and copy-editing alerts.
- The project has a stress hotline available for your use.
If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask one of the project coordinators, or any experienced member of the project, and we'll be happy to help you. Again, welcome! We look forward to seeing you around! Kirill 16:53, 31 January 2009 (UTC)
Bitumin
I have observed that you have redirected the new page Grades of Bitumin to Bitumin. I wanted to add some information in the same which is useful for engineers and as such the page should be separate. The details of the various pecifications are available in the site http://www.bharatpetroleum.com/business/specialities_Bitumen.asp?from=bus. No information on this is available. You may kindly relook at your decision. Sorry if i have made changes at the wrong place.Sanjivkumarsharma (talk) 11:36, 4 February 2009 (UTC)
- (moved into separate section) Hello. I redirected you page because it didn't appear to have enough material to warrant an article. It's great to see that you are willing to add such material, but may I suggest that you add it as a section on the main Bitumen page? That page is looking quite bare and could certainly use some attention! :) » \ / (⁂) 11:42, 4 February 2009 (UTC)
lose-lose-lose
This document contains the name of Leonidas A. Papakonstantinidis but that is the only connection it has with the win-win-win model. Clearly the article needed to be deleted but I would have liked to see it done for an honest reason. — RHaworth (Talk | contribs) 11:56, 4 February 2009 (UTC)
- Hmm... Argh! I must have copied the link from the wrong tab. I'll try and find it again. Sorry. » \ / (⁂) 11:57, 4 February 2009 (UTC)
Here we are. The full paper didn't appear to be online, but on page 28 of this document, it mentions a paper by the same author with the same title. I can't quite remember what the content of the article was, (was a big page), but I did dig up this which I seem to recall was also connected. Let me know if I still have the wrong link; I don't store my browsing history so trying to find it again was a bit tough! Apologies again. » \ / (⁂) 12:04, 4 February 2009 (UTC)
- It don't actually matter. Even though I did it, I feel that any deletion such as this using copyvio as the reason is "dishonest" / lacks integrity. We should be up-front and tell the author straight: no original research. — RHaworth (Talk | contribs) 12:17, 4 February 2009 (UTC)
Was the author of the page Mr. Papakonstantinidis? If so certainly it should have been classed as original research, but otherwise I don't understand how deleting a copyright violation as a copyright violation is 'dishonest'. » \ / (⁂) 20:35, 4 February 2009 (UTC)
- Yes. Ignoring 'honesty', if we delete as copyvio, Leonidas could go through the copyright release procedure and repost it. If we delete as original research, Leonidas is in a much worse position if he tries to repost. — RHaworth (Talk | contribs) 21:24, 4 February 2009 (UTC)

The main problem is, and I don't mean to crush your hopes, but that article does not meet the 10-item rule, so it can't be nominated for FL status, until at least 10 items are included in the list. Sorry.--TRUCO 22:01, 7 February 2009 (UTC)

Alright. Thanks for the heads up. Should I use CSD A1 instead? or CSD A7? Someone has already made an attack page on me, using very expletive language. So, I'm getting used to it. Thanks again. Riotrocket8676 You gotta problem with that? 20:58, 9 February 2009 (UTC)

discussion template question
hey - thanks for the welcome. I anticipate I will soon be adding much additional information to the number of stub neighborhood articles I created. As of now, I just wanted to create the basic articles, so they are mainly just stubs, each giving basic locational data as well as informative links to UGIS numbers and community profiles and maps. I looked at similar neighborhood articles from New York and have used a 'template' I saw on their discussion pages which I believe to be appropriate and applicable. Would you be able to verify that I am correct in my assumption? Thanks--SHH2009 (talk) 11:33, 10 February 2009 (UTC)
- I've looked through a few of your edits, particularly those concerning talk pages, and it seems like you are pretty much accurate. Most of the time finding templates from similar pages will suffice - most wikiprojects keep their articles up to date. In the event you can't find a similar article or suitable template, searching for the relevant Wikiproject is the best way to go. You may be interested in joining Wikiproject New York. They will be able to provide more refined information, and give you an opportunity to get others who may also be interested in your articles to assist you. Hope this helps... if you have any further queries don't be afraid to ask. • \ / (⁂) 12:06, 10 February 2009 (UTC)

Optional question
I've got an RfA–style question for you:
Would you be willing to update the DYK template soon after a successful RfA? The bot is on its last legs and isn't even doing updates any more. Many admins, when asked, have shied away from the task in fear of messing up the main page. Shubinator (talk) 23:50, 15 February 2009 (UTC)
- I was always planning to help out at DYK, but it's looking increasingly unlikely that the RfA will pass. • \ / (⁂) 06:11, 16 February 2009 (UTC)
- Eh, don't count your dead fetuses before they...don't hatch? Shubinator (talk) 08:15, 16 February 2009 (UTC)
Your RfA and CSD
Hey there \/, I am currently reviewing your CSD work... thus far it is looking ok (I've only looked at a handful of edits so far) but one thing that I would recommend, if you tag something as G10, blank the page as well. An attack page needs to get out of the system as quickly as possible to avoid wikiclones capturing the attack. If an admin wants to see the attack, they can do so via the history.---I'm Spartacus! The artist formerly known as Balloonman 19:34, 17 February 2009 (UTC)
- I am looking at another article was clearly deleted per the wrong tag, but there is no way you or the deleting admin could have known it. The article was on Saxochina which is a clear copyvio of this page. You tagged the article as no-content (a1) and it was deleted as such. As for why you and the deleting admin didn't catch it and tagged such a large article as A1? That's simple, the person who created the article put a <gallery> tag at the top, so the page appeared blank. The reason I mention it is because you might have noted that if you had seen the number of bytes the article had. Again, this is in no way shape or form, a negative, just an FYI.---I'm Spartacus! The artist formerly known as Balloonman 19:44, 17 February 2009 (UTC)
- Another article, "the hearing aid incident" you tagged this as G3, which is ok, but as it deals with a named person, I would have prefered to see the page tagged G10 and blanked. Again, not enough to get me to oppose over, but just an observation.---I'm Spartacus! The artist formerly known as Balloonman 19:58, 17 February 2009 (UTC)
- Thanks for the comments. I obviously can't see the articles, but I do remember the Saxochina article. By the time I has realised what the author had done, it had been deleted. As for G10, I'll make sure I do that more often. I have blanked phone numbers and emails previously, but I'll extend that to G10's too. The Hearing Aid Incident... did that involve the kids mother in some way? I vaguely remember it, but I'll try to utilise G10 as you said. • \ / (⁂) 20:26, 17 February 2009 (UTC)
- Yes, I have noticed you getting rid of Email addresses... (haven't come across a phone number yet.) I'm taking a look here and there piecemeal as I get breaks in my work... so far nothing overly concerning. A few cases where I would have used a different criteria, but nothing that I would call wrong, more cases where the article could have been deleted per several criteria.---I'm Spartacus! The artist formerly known as Balloonman 20:56, 17 February 2009 (UTC)

Just to followup with what I said at your RfA, your work over the past month has been solid. It wasn't until I started looking at your older work that problems started to arise, and unfortunately when I went back to just December, it seemed as if you were unfamiliar with the criteria. Again, your current work is solid and if you keep it up over the next few months, I can see you overcoming my concern. Similarly, careful work with user names should quell those who opposed over that issue as well. I see this RfA as a positive. While it will likely fail, you are leaving with some solid feedback that you can address. There are some RfA's that when they finish, I think "That person will never pass an RfA." There are others where I fully expect them to come back in 3-4 months and fly through. Based upon the opposes you are getting, I'd put you in that later category. (assuming you address the issues!)---I'm Spartacus! The artist formerly known as Balloonman 22:32, 17 February 2009 (UTC)

Greetings Backslash Forwardslash. Thanks for making those NPOV suggestions at White Terror (Spain). re: Birks
Hi Backslash Forwardslash. I've had a bit of a look at the Birks article, and made a few tweaks along with a ruff copy-edit. I removed the list of Birks' service medals from the "awards=" section of the infobox as campaign/service medals are not traditionally placed in that section, and the "References" section has also been removed as those sources have not been used in the article. There are a few minor prose issues with the article, but the main problem is information. In its current state, the article might pass as B-Class but would falter at GA based on comprehensiveness. More information and detail is required on Birks' life, particularly in regards to his service during the First World War and Victoria Cross action. Well, I hope this helps. If you have any further questions and/or queries, please don't hesitate to ask. :) Cheers, Abraham, B.S. (talk) 05:05, 2 March 2009 (UTC)
- Yeah, I think I picked the wrong article! There is little information on Birks out there in terms of his personal life, I can look more into the history of his platoon for service specifics but he was a fairly ordinary guy until the war. Thanks. :) ∗ \ / (⁂) 05:10, 2 March 2009 (UTC)

Hi, thanks for that. Some people don't see that we are missing thousands of resourceful articles on German wikipedia and many of the opther wikipedias which can be transwikied within minutes like this. The preliminary step has to be made and when there is a huge number of articles to get onto here I'm afraid I can't develop everyone of them but I know wikiproject and editors who care for these articles will. If spamming is what some consider a mass effort to begin transwiking thousands of resourceful articles which will greatly improve our coverage eventually them I'm very sorry. Next update pics
Hi Backslash. I've noticed you seem to have a bit of a problem with the next update pics. In order to get them to format properly, all you need to do is remove the field that says "right" in the pic code, if it's left in it always screws up the formatting.
Also, in case you are unaware of it, as a general rule we try to use funny or quirky hooks (of an upbeat nature) in the bottom slot. Check the rules of thumb in the Additional Rules. Just something to bear in mind. Other than that, you are doing a great job in preparing updates! Thanks again for all your help around DYK. Gatoclass (talk) 09:49, 11 March 2009 (UTC)
- Thanks for the notice Gatoclass. I generally try to remember to take them out, but I do forget occasionally. I also do try to put a quirky hook at the end of an update - I found
- 'that Dr Delano Meriwether won the 100 yard event at the 1971 Amateur Athletics Union championships wearing a hospital shirt, swimming trunks and gold suspenders?'
- to be quite unusual, but often there isn't a quirky hook to use. (in fact, very often the only funny one is the 40th eldest verified hook.) ∗ \ / (⁂) 09:54, 11 March 2009 (UTC)
- Yeah, that's a great hook for the last one! It gave me a good chuckle :)
- Re the difficulty in finding funny or quirky hooks - I know this can be a problem, I'm not sure what you mean though by "40th eldest verified hook", you can take hooks from anywhere on the Suggestions page as long as they have been verified. We do of course try to give preference to the hooks closer to expiry to ensure the older hooks don't hang around too long, but it's more important to get a good balance in the update so that should always be the priority. I take hooks from all over the Suggestions page when I am putting together updates, because often it's the only way to get a balanced update. Gatoclass (talk) 10:01, 11 March 2009 (UTC)
- I'm well aware of that, but people tend to get a bit itchy when newer hooks are promoted over older ones, and unless the hook is absolutely perfect, I try not to make it a habit. ∗ \ / (⁂) 10:03, 11 March 2009 (UTC)
- Well, their itchiness is their problem, not ours :) All the verified hooks will eventually get into an update, so they are not going to miss out on anything. Part of the reason we have five days worth of suggestions is to ensure we have a good selection of hooks to choose from, so don't allow yourself to be pressured by noobs complaining that their hook hasn't been promoted yet. Gatoclass (talk) 10:12, 11 March 2009 (UTC)
- (outdent) Oops, I guess the image problem is partly my fault. I just removed
right
from the output generated by {{NewDYKnom}}, so hopefully now people won't even have to remember to remove "right" (except in cases where people nominate an img outside the template and put the "right" in). rʨanaɢ talk/contribs 13:19, 11 March 2009 (UTC)- It's no-ones fault - sometimes it is hard to remember to remove it when you are distracted by the <!-- INSERT ROLLOVER --> text. ∗ \ / (⁂) 20:40, 11 March 2009 (UTC)

Oakvilledivers username concern
Hope you don't mind, but I've added what I guess to be your reason for expressing a concern about the username to the talkpage. You'd not supplied one, and the template was reading
"[there is a concern about your username] for the following reason: NO REASON GIVEN".
I concur with your concern, by the way, given that the user simply seems to want to promote himself. Tonywalton Talk 22:54, 12 March 2009 (UTC)
- Oops! I had meant to notify him that his userpage was against policy (I blanked it), but I must've clicked the wrong option. Thanks anyway, it is a valid concern with the username anyway. ∗ \ / (⁂) 05:30, 13 March 2009 (UTC)
Admins! Yes you!
Good point. Can you give me a link to the page in question, so I can change it? Thanks, Gatoclass (talk) 07:43, 14 March 2009 (UTC)
- On reflection, I've realized there is no point in changing the wording as that text only addresses protection of the image, which can only be done by admins. Sorry to send you on that wild goose chase :) Gatoclass (talk) 09:03, 14 March 2009 (UTC)

- Yes, but the Israeli concerns are already covered in articles such as Foreign relations of Israel, putting (this is debatable) in the lead gives to much weight to the anti-Israeli viewpoint, especially given that Israel has a bigger majority of support than Kosovo. ∗ \ / (⁂) 21:16, 28 March 2009 (UTC)

I wish to thank you for your gracious support during my bid for a position as Coordinator of the Military history Wikiproject in the recent March 2009 elections. I was initially apprehensive to stand for election as I was unsure on how well I would be received, but I am pleasantly surprised and delighted to have been deemed worthy to represent my peers within the project. I assure and promise you, I will strive to do my upmost to justify your trust in myself with this esteemed position. Thank you, Abraham, B.S. (talk) 01:22, 29 March 2009 (UTC)

Google Chrome
Hi there.
Ive noticed that you use Google Chrome as a primary editing source. Here are some cool things about it. For one thing, you can force what they call a "Sad Tab" up on the screen. Just type in about:crash in the address bar. If you want to know more about a sad tab, go to this article and go to the sad section, and then to the sad tab subsection. Im sorry if I wasted valued tome with you. I just wanted to share this with you. Carabera (talk) 01:23, 30 March 2009 (UTC)

Welcome
Hello, Backslash Forwardslash, and welcome to Wikipedia! Thank you for your contributions. I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Unfortunately, one or more of your edits have not conformed to Wikipedia's verifiability policy, and have been reverted. Wikipedia articles should refer only to facts and interpretations that have been stated in print or on reputable websites or other forms of media. Always remember to provide a reliable source for quotations and for any material that is likely to be challenged, or it may be removed. Wikipedia also has a related policy against including original research in articles.
There is a page about the verifiability policy that explains the policy in greater detail, and another that offers tips on the proper ways of citing sources. If you are stuck and looking for help, please come to the New contributors' help page, where experienced Wikipedians can answer any queries you have! Or, you can just type {{helpme}}

- Thankyou very much for the welcome. Please read the references I have supplied on the article, as they support everything in the article. The only reason I haven't put them in an inline quote is that I kept edit-conflicting with you to fix it! Also, With 3 DYKs, 1 FA and 1 GA, I am aware of the notability policy. ∗ \ / (⁂) 22:57, 4 April 2009 (UTC)
slow down warnings
While I appreciate the advice to carefully consider CSD tagging, it is hard for me to take them seriously when you link to my cleaning off my own talk page. (which I regularly do). I know you are probably frustrated about the tags placed on Radiopilot, I'm holding off tagging it any further to give you and other editors a chance to improve it. Please focus your efforts there, rather than my talk page.--RadioFan (talk) 23:25, 4 April 2009 (UTC)
- Oops! I must've given you the wrong link. I was referring to this and this. A7 has a very low bar for notability, if it makes any claim of notability it shouldn't be tagged with CSDs. ∗ \ / (⁂) 23:27, 4 April 2009 (UTC)
- Very well, CSD tags are gone. I have no problem reviewing these decisions if specifics are mentioned. repeatedly placing boilerplates on my talk page immediately after a disagreement concerning Radiopilot seemed like sour grapes at the time. Cheers.--RadioFan (talk) 23:33, 4 April 2009 (UTC)
- I know they're gone, I removed them. You simply removed the unreferenced tag with an incorrect summary. Anyway, please pay more attention, and try not to welcome template the regulars. :) ∗ \ / (⁂) 23:37, 4 April 2009 (UTC)
- You had a blank talk page (which most regulars dont), and Radiopilot article looked like a non-notable band at the time. As a regular, I'm sure you know about the quantity of non-notable band articles that show up on wikipedia. there's one every few minutes. So I'm sure you'll understand my mistake.--RadioFan (talk) 23:40, 4 April 2009 (UTC)

- True but, In the right of the screen you'll notice an archive box, going back to last August. Many established editors don't even have archive boxes, so checking the previous contributions of a user is not a bad idea. Secondly, when I do NPP, I tend to give a bit more leeway to articles with the {{underconstruction}} tag, simply because really only regulars use it to protect themselves against speedies before they had a chance to expand. (As an interesting sidenote, there is also a German and Russian Radiopilot article, and given de.wiki generally has more stringent notability standards, and that the band is German should've given pause.) ∗ \ / (⁂) 23:44, 4 April 2009 (UTC)
- I missed the archive box, sorry. Actually, you'd be surprised what people will put in articles to prevent deletion. I've been seeing a lot of articles that have a {{hangon}} tag included in the first version. Many of the band articles recently have included the {{underconstruction}} tag whether the article had any chance of notability or not. Sorry if I offended you by prematurely tagging Radiopilot.--RadioFan (talk) 23:51, 4 April 2009 (UTC)
