Sorrento/Mira Mesa
editHi there - I see you've been changing "Sorrento Mesa" to "Mira Mesa" in a couple of places. While Sorrento Mesa is certainly officially part of Mira Mesa, it has its own identity, too, which is confirmed in neutral sources in the articles (for example, the Coaster website says there is shuttle service to Sorrento Mesa, not Mira Mesa). Anyone going to the Sorrento Mesa article will see that the city of San Diego considers it part of the Mira Mesa planning area. In deciding whether to use "Sorrento Mesa" or "Mira Mesa" in any given context, we should follow the usage in reliable sources. Dohn joe (talk) 18:49, 22 March 2011 (UTC)
- Hi, BariVaz, and thanks for contributing to articles about San Diego. It's true that Sorrento Mesa is considered by the city to be a "sub-area" within the Mira Mesa Community Plan - but so are most of the hundred or so "neighborhoods of San Diego" recognized by Wikipedia. The city recognizes only
20 or so52 Community Planning Areas; those planning areas often contain many distinct neighborhoods (or "sub-areas") within them, and those neighborhoods deserve an article if they are properly sourced. Notice, for example, that the city councilman for the area lists "Sorrento Mesa" as one of the communities in City Council District 5 [1] [2]. The local chambers of commerce recognize it as a distinct area (referenced in the article). There's no reason to have to downgrade Sorrento Mesa into a "sub-area of Mira Mesa"; it is a recognized neighborhood. Thanks for bringing this to discussion, and let's continue discussion here rather than on my talk page or Dohn Joe's. --MelanieN (talk) 22:34, 22 March 2011 (UTC)- P.S. I see that you removed the neighborhood of Sorrento Mesa from the Carl DeMaio article (even though as I demonstrated above he considers it part of his district), the University City article, the Coaster article - you've really been on a quest here. I gather that your main interest is the Mira Mesa Town Council, but that doesn't mean you have to elimiinate all references to Sorrento Mesa! --MelanieN (talk) 22:40, 22 March 2011 (UTC)
- By the way, I see that you are a board member of the Mira Mesa Town Council [3]. That could mean that you have a conflict of interest, and you should be careful not to use Wikipedia editing to promote your own special interest. Please see WP:COI for cautions to observe when you are editing about subjects where you have a vested interest. Thanks. --MelanieN (talk) 22:50, 22 March 2011 (UTC)

Hi Melanie! Yes, I have been doing some editing of Sorrento Mesa/Mira Mesa. You see, there are many who do not understand that Sorrento Mesa is a part of Mira Mesa, or understand the difference between the term "neighborhood" as defined by the City of San Diego's City Planning and Community Investment department versus the common usage of "neighborhood". For example, you suggest that I am trying to "downgrade Sorrento Mesa into a sub-area of Mira Mesa". However, this is exactly how CPCI and the City Council define Sorrento Mesa - as a "sub-area of the Mira Mesa Planning Area." The City of San Diego's website was at one time displaying the San Diego Police Department's map as the "Map of Neighborhoods" for the city; however, the "official" map of neighborhoods for the city is created by CPCI and the City Council. I was using what I believe to be authoritative sources - the San Diego City Council, CPCI - to make the distinction. Common usage is not always factually correct. What has resulted is a confusion on many levels as to where Mira Mesa begins and ends. I see that you have edited the "Mira Mesa" article and included the comment that "No one confuses Mira Mesa with Sorrento Valley!". I beg to differ - just take a look at Google maps or, even worse, the maps produced by our own San Diego Police Department. SDPD's own map defines the area between I-805 and Camino Santa Fe as "Sorrento Valley". My mission is one of education; due to the confusion over whether this area is "Sorrento Valley", "Sorrento Mesa", or "Mira Mesa", Mira Mesa is often left out when receiving information for our community. There are even members of our own San Diego City Council (whom I will not name) who believe that Mira Mesa ends at Camino Santa Fe. While this may seem trivial, it can lead to many problems with our city government. Because of this confusion, the Sorrento Mesa area of Mira Mesa was transferred to another SDPD District. Crime statistics for the Sorrento Mesa area of Mira Mesa were not being shared with the community because SDPD did not understand that both areas were really in the same "neighborhood". I am sorry that you consider my membership in the Mira Mesa Town Council to be a cause of "conflict of interest". The reason FOR my membership was a desire to improve the community in which I live. I did not perceive correcting this misperception to be a "conflict of interest", but rather an opportunity to correct a mistaken notion as well as hopefully start a dialog that gets these two halves of the same community to begin working together. Rather than each of us editing/re-editing the same articles, I would like to work with you to develop a guideline for using Mira Mesa/Sorrento Mesa that achieves both of our goals - respecing the identity of Sorrento Mesa while educating that it is still a part of Mira Mesa. BariVaz (talk) 14:27, 23 March 2011 (UTC)
- The Planning Department is not the only reliable source to consider. If it was, we would have only 52 neighborhood articles on Wikipedia, instead of more than 100. The fact that a neighborhood is part of a large planning community does not mean the neighborhood does not exist. As Dohn Joe said above, it's a matter of what Reliable Sources say. And since there are a lot of Reliable Sources saying that there is such a neighborhood as Sorrento Mesa, it should be identified as such.
This is how it is done throughout San Diego. Look at Point Loma for example. Its planning area is Peninsula, but the article is called Point Loma since that is what all the Reliable Sources call it. Point Loma has a number of sub-neighborhoods with their own articles, including La Playa, Loma Portal, Shelter Island, etc. Those articles make it clear that they are part of Point Loma. But that does not meant that we have to find everyplace where it says La Playa and change it to Point Loma! Similarly, the Uptown planning area contains North Park, Mission Hills, Hillcrest and Bankers Hill; those are the notable neighborhoods and it would be foolish to change all those references to "Uptown" just because they are part of the Uptown planning area.
If you are trying to introduce a new policy that says all neighborhoods must be referred to only by the name of their larger community planning area, that proposal it needs to be discussed, and I doubt if it would achieve consensus.
The examples you just gave show that many sources both within and outside the city government DO consider Sorrento Mesa to be a distinctive neighborhood. They (and the city councilman) are authoritative sources just as much the Planning Deparatment is. You say your "mission is education" to try to correct all those other sources to get them to agree with the Planning Department. And yet Wikipedia's mission is not to "educate" if it means siding with one authoritative source to insist that all the other authoritative sources are wrong. Wikipedia reflects what the sources say.
Thanks for caring about your community. I, too, am a member of a community board. But I understand the difference between boosting my community (which I do in real life) and editing Wikipedia (which means following Wikipedia policy, including neutrality and reliance on sources). See the Five Pillars of Wikipedia. --MelanieN (talk) 14:53, 23 March 2011 (UTC)
Balboa Park GLAM project
editHello, I hope you are doing well. I recently left a message at WP:SANDIEGO's talk page about a new GLAM collaboration with Balboa Park. I'm contacting you to determine if you'd be interested in participating in the project. The staff there would like to meet with a group of Wikipedians to eventually lead to tours of the museums, image donations, editing collaborations, contests, and other events. If you have any interest at all in helping in any capacity, please list your name at WP:GLAM/BP so we can determine what size group we're looking at. As this collaboration has just started, if you have any questions, comments, ideas, etc., please leave them on the project's talk page. Thank you! --Happy editing!
