Category: Irish Roman Catholics

Bastun, I believe you were in error removing this category from Roma Downey. The article claims that "She played kind-hearted angel Monica on the American TV series Touched by an Angel. Downey received two Emmy and Golden Globe nominations for her role on the show. She is currently the executive producer of the television miniseries The Bible on the History channel. She also plays the role of Mother Mary in the series. The Bible shattered sales records in its first week of home video release, selling 525,000 units to become the top-selling TV miniseries of all time." It then goes on to claim that she was raised as a Roman Catholic, citing her TV interview at Actress Roma Downey on religion, faith (2:19) - The Washington Post. If you dispute these claims in the article, surely you should be correcting it? On the other hand if you accept that the article is accurate, the Irish Roman Catholics category is entirely appropriate per BLP policy ('"unless the subject has publicly self-identified with the belief or orientation in question, and the subject's beliefs or sexual orientation are relevant to their public life or notability, according to reliable published sources"'). - Pointillist (talk) 07:46, 18 May 2013 (UTC)

I've just checked Brian Coffey and I think you were over-zealous there, too. Catholicism is the thread running through Coffey's entire adult life, including his Bachelor's degree, his studies at Institut Catholique de Paris, his doctorate and his time teaching at St Benedict's School and Saint Louis University. I entirely agree that categories should not be used to introduce irrelevant/unsourced materials into articles, but some of your deletions are throwing out the baby with the bathwater! - Pointillist (talk) 08:05, 18 May 2013 (UTC)
"She played kind-hearted angel Monica on the American TV series Touched by an Angel. Downey received two Emmy and Golden Globe nominations for her role on the show."
Notability: For being an actress. Or should we add William Shatner to Category:Canadian astronauts? Or Roma Downey to Category:First Ladies of the United States?
"She is currently the executive producer of the television miniseries The Bible on the History channel. She also plays the role of Mother Mary in the series."
Notability: For being an actress again, and being a producer.
"The Bible shattered sales records in its first week of home video release, selling 525,000 units to become the top-selling TV miniseries of all time."
Not seeing any relevance to inclusion in any categories.
"It then goes on to claim that she was raised as a Roman Catholic"
So what? So were millions of people. They're not notable for it, either. Many have since converted, defected, been excommunicated, lapsed, become agnostic or atheist, or practice their own version of a religion that permits remarriage, and marriage ceremonies that can be carried out by women...
"If you dispute these claims in the article, surely you should be correcting it?"
What's to dispute? Well, maybe that 525,000 sales in a niche market (miniseries) is notable or should be in the opening paragraph - Game of Thrones apparently manages 4.3 million pirated downloads per episode (http://torrentfreak.com/hbo-game-of-thrones-piracy-is-a-compliment-doesnt-hurt-sales-130401/) in addition to legitimate views and boxed-set sales...
"On the other hand if you accept that the article is accurate, the Irish Roman Catholics category is entirely appropriate per BLP policy "
False argument. The article may be reasonably accurate. But someone saying they were raised as a Catholic doesn't qualify them for inclusion in Irish Roman Catholics. Going by the (presumably accurate) "Personal life" section, she certainly doesn't seem to be a Catholic, being divorced and married by a female friend at her house, for example. So if she's not a Catholic, how can she be notable for being a Catholic?
Regarding Coffey - is he notable for being a Catholic, or for being a poet? The latter, I'm afraid. Therefore, he too doesn't qualify for inclusion. He is, however, properly included in Category:Roman Catholic writers. BastunĖġáḍβáś₮ŭŃ! 14:10, 31 May 2013 (UTC)
