ArbCom 2021 Elections voter message

edit
Hello! Voting in the 2021 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 (UTC) on Monday, 6 December 2021. All eligible users are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2021 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. If you no longer wish to receive these messages, you may add {{NoACEMM}} to your user talk page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 00:05, 23 November 2021 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for the welcome Bobherry! I've actually been active on Wikipedia since 2005 (waxing and waning in activity, obviously) and have taught classes on Wikipedia quite a few times before. Lots of details on my user page of course. I think this is the first time I got one of these introductions, though! —mako 06:54, 4 January 2022 (UTC)Reply

@Zzzzzyfffff: Hi Krystal! Notice how by starting your lines with spaces it did something kinda funny to your text. You don't have to be an expert in Help:Wikitext but it doesn't hurt. Generally speaking, if you want to indent stuff, you should use ":" and don't start lines with spaces unless you want it be in a typewriter type font. —mako 22:02, 18 January 2022 (UTC)Reply

Hey Mako, I'm not entirely sure how I managed to have 2 Wikipedia accounts. Let's stick with Vjspez because it appears I have been up to date consistently on this account, and "Vinnyspeziale" hasn't done a single assignment. This class has been really enjoyable and I love how you always bring so much knowledge and enthusiasm in class even if it is online. Although I am still getting used to the Wiki format, I am looking forward to enhance my skills and learning more about online communities! Steph.tsaii (talk) 08:53, 15 January 2022 (UTC)Reply

@Steph.tsaii: Greetings Steph! I'm glad the class has been working for you so far! Hopefully we won't be online only for too much longer. —mako 22:56, 18 January 2022 (UTC)Reply

Introduction - Hakeem

edit

Hello Professor Mako! I'm Hakeem and I'm excited to be taking your class. Interestingly, based on your personal page of interests I think I know how to do one of the things on your Trans-Siberian goals list on your page, but I'm unsure if I'm understanding it correctly. If by "polyphony through whistling" you mean being able to hum and whistle at the same time with two different notes, then I do know how to do that, but if you meant whistling two different notes at the same time then I'm afraid (if it's possible) I don't yet know how to do it!--Hshibly (talk) 06:11, 16 January 2022 (UTC)Reply

@Hshibly: Greetings Hakeen! That's awesome that you can hum and whistle at the same time! I can do it... just a little but I can't really control them independently. I'm not sure if people can whistle multiple tones at the same time. —mako 22:56, 18 January 2022 (UTC)Reply

Hello Mako! My name is Kylie and I am a student in COM 481. I am a third year student, majoring in Communication with a minor in ASL and potentially a minor in Business. I am looking forward to the rest of this course!

@Kfoltz2: Greetings Kylie! Welcome to the course!
One quick thing: It looks like you didn't sign your message with ~~~~. Make sure you've mastered this and maybe check in with Khascall in section and/or office hours to make sure. You can also just leave another response here to try it out. I guess it was just a simple oversight but it's an important part of communicating on Wikipedia so it's worth making sure you've got it before we get much deeper into the Wikipedia assignments. —mako 22:56, 18 January 2022 (UTC)Reply
@Benjamin Mako Hill: Hello again! Thank you for your feedback. This is a test to make sure I know how to sign off correctly moving forward. Please let me know if I did this correctly! Kfoltz2 (talk) 18:09, 22 January 2022 (UTC)Reply
@Kfoltz2: You got it! —mako 00:18, 24 January 2022 (UTC)Reply

Problems with your Winter 2022 course

edit

Noticed a few problems with your course from the get-go:

wizzito | say hello! 22:37, 17 January 2022 (UTC)Reply

@Wizzito: Thanks for bringing these issues to my attention. I'll respond quickly the points you raised:
  • I fixed the capitalization, typos, and spacing issues and reassigned the "correct" version of the mistyped articles in the WikiEdu dashboard. I reached out all the students and reminded them that capitalization matters.
  • I've raised your concern with Summer Time (Album) with Xinya Gong. The student may reconsider their choice of article based on your feedback. Thanks!
  • I've asked Yiwen122 if Lijia Qi might be a duplicate of already-existing Nicky Li. I'm not sure what the answer is.
  • I believe that Khascall (who is teaching the class with me) has already talked with the student related behind the edits to Ballard FC. SounderBruce, who reverted those edits, is often a guest speaker in my class. Since Bruce is active on many Seattle-area articles where my university is based, there is often interaction here.
These are all good faith errors from absolute newbies who have edited Wikipedia for the first time in the last week or two. I've mentioned your message in a number of my responses to students and please feel respond directly to students if you feel the need. There's no need to send everything through me unless you want to.
Khascall and I are working closely with the students to try to guide them in the process and we're encouraging them to work in their sandbox until we can vet their contributions and help them improve them. There will probably more errors and issues but we're doing what we can to minimize disruptions while we train up a new generation of contributors. We were all newcomers once! —mako 00:03, 19 January 2022 (UTC)Reply
Benjamin Mako Hill Thanks, and good luck with the course   wizzito | say hello! 01:36, 19 January 2022 (UTC)Reply
