License tagging for Image:MATBseries1.gif

Thanks for uploading Image:MATBseries1.gif. Wikipedia gets thousands of images uploaded every day, and in order to verify that the images can be legally used on Wikipedia, the source and copyright status must be indicated. Images need to have an image tag applied to the image description page indicating the copyright status of the image. This uniform and easy-to-understand method of indicating the license status allows potential re-users of the images to know what they are allowed to do with the images.

I see in my messages that I need to attach copyright tags to my images MATBseries1.gif, MATBseries2.jpg, and MATBseries4.jpg. The images are from promotional material, and I'm in contact with the copyright holder, who has given permission to use them (I explained this in the summary when I uploaded them). Maybe I'm just tired, but I can't find a clear explanation of how to construct the appropriate tag, or where to put it.Bentruwe 08:04, 18 October 2007 (UTC)

Unfortunately, mere permission isn't enough; the images need to be licenced under a licence that allows copying by sites other than Wikipedia and creation of derivative works, among other things. See commons:Commons:Licensing#Acceptable_licenses for information about what licences are acceptable; note that 'Use by Wikimedia only' is not an acceptable restriction according to that list. The three most important points in selecting a licence are:

• Republication and distribution must be allowed
• Publication of derivative work must be allowed
• Commercial use of the work must be allowed

The three most commonly-used licences here that meet these descriptions are the GNU Free Documentation Licence, and the Creative Commons Attribution and Attribution-Sharealike licences. I think you should tag one or two of these as fair use and let the rest get deleted. If the copyright holder is willing to relicense them, then you can use all three, but fair use of all three would be overkill.--chaser - t 08:25, 18 October 2007 (UTC)

Orphaned non-free media (Image:MATBseries1.gif)

Non-free rationale for File:MATBseries4.jpg

I notice the file page specifies that the file is being used under non-free content criteria, but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia is acceptable.
