Hi Jim, thanks for your comments re: the communist articles i've been writing. I got my information from using google and the web pages of the parties themselves. I've done all of the communist/non social democrat socialist parties in the European parliament (European United Left - Nordic Green Left) and am working on the List of communist parties and Comintern article. I don't know if you want to collaborate on this - there's lots of stuff that needs doing. The History of British Socialism article has nothing on Scotland on it. Tommy Sheridan doesn't have an article etc. Secretlondon 11:51, Nov 6, 2003 (UTC)

What a great user name. :-) Evercat 13:15, 6 Nov 2003 (UTC)

I'm not actually from the area, I just had a happy holiday in Glasgow last year, visited some of these places, and thought I'd fill in a couple of articles on it. Thanks for the extra info. Warofdreams 17:50, 6 Nov 2003 (UTC)

Could you add some stuff on Red Clydeside on the History of British Socialism page? I've mentioned that the right wing press thought they were "bolsheviks", but I've not done any more, as I don't know a lot about it. Thanks.

My apologies ;) I'll leave NI politics free for you if you like. Morwen 16:30, 7 Nov 2003 (UTC)

Hallo; I was thinking, perhaps you'd like to take a look at 'articles requested for over a year' page: there's a request there for an article about Scottish freedom movements that you might like to look into, but then again maybe not. I read your (übercool) name and the sort of articles you wrote in the recent changes list, and I thought you just might be interested. I had some trouble finding the page, and I'm not sure my link works: It may be found visiting Community Portal, following the link Create (in the Things you can do-box), and then Articles requested for over a year-link. Sietse 12:42, 8 Mar 2004 (UTC)

Hi - regarding your question about the Edward Hunter article. The article is certainly interesting, but I'm afraid I can't think of anywhere to put a link to it. There's almost nothing in Wikipedia about socialism in New Zealand, except for something I wrote about the Communist Party of New Zealand (which I don't think he had much to do with). Eventually, I hope to write something about the history of New Zealand socialism (it's highly confusing at present - so much splintering it's hard to keep track of the various factions). If/when that happens, Hunter will surely get a mention, but until then, I can't really think of anywhere to refer to him. Sorry about that - there are still a lot of gaps in the New Zealand politics pages. -- Vardion 04:41, 21 Nov 2003 (UTC)

Well, you may already have seen it, but did you see the article about him in the Dictionary of New Zealand Biography? It's a government service, and is available online at www.dnzb.govt.nz - just select Find, click on H, and look for "Hunter, Edward". I don't think there's anything there you don't have already, but it might be worth a look if you haven't already seen it. I will, however, see if I can find some more information about him off-line - there are a few books I know of that he'd probably be mentioned in. I'm not sure how soon I'll be able to do that, but I'll get back to you when I've done it. - Vardion 13:21, 21 Nov 2003 (UTC)

Quick update - I haven't been able to get at the books yet, but I had a bit of free time, so I wrote something brief about Socialism in New Zealand. I've mentioned Edward Hunter, and put a link to the new page in Hunter's article (hope you don't mind). The new article doesn't say very much about him yet, since I still need to collect my information. - Vardion 12:14, 22 Nov 2003 (UTC)
Sorry it's taken me so long to reply, but I've had difficulty getting at the book I remembered. I'm not sure when I'll be able to track it down. I do know, however, that there's at least a chapter about him, so there should be plenty of information once I can get to it. But from what I can find, your article on him seems quite adequate. The book itself is called "On the Left: Essays on Socialism in New Zealand" - see this Amazon.co.uk page (hoping that the link works), or this IALHI page. Whether that's of any use to you, I don't know. There are probably other sources as well. -- Vardion 05:27, 27 Dec 2003 (UTC)

I've created a new category of "religion-based parties" (there's probably a better name for it), and also one for "single-issue parties", as I suspect there are several more. Hope this is agreeable with you. Warofdreams 16:25, 15 Mar 2004 (UTC)

Earl of Bothwell

edit

I've been working on the peerage articles and I noted that you created the article for Francis Stewart Hepburn. Most information I've found lists him as the first earl of the second creation, not the fifth earl of the first creation (as that title was forfeited). Mackensen 02:00, 3 Apr 2004 (UTC)

Copyright violations

Could you tell me why a lot of the political party articles you have edited bear a striking resemblance to the entries in my book "Politico's Guide to the History of British Political Parties" (ISBN 1902301595)? For example, your entry for the Campaign for Social Democracy says that Dick Taverne "formed the Campaign for Social Democracy as an attempt to build a radical non-doctrinaire social democratic movement" when my book says "The CSD sought to build a radical non-doctrinaire social democratic movement". On the Democratic Party your entry says "They were formed in 1998 by various people who felt there was scope for a party that placed democracy as its paramount political value. It asserts that its members come from across the political spectrum." My book says "The Democratic Party was formed in 1998 by several people who believed there was a role for a party placing democracy as its paramount belief. The party asserts that its members come from across the political spectrum."

I could produce stacks of other examples. Dbiv 23:12, 21 Apr 2004 (UTC)

Strathkelvin Party

edit

Hullo Big Jim. Saw your article on new Strathkelvin Party (name escapes me already). Maybe you could add something on its scope, ie whether it will be sticking to local politics or contesting national elections. Mattley 11:16, 10 Nov 2004 (UTC)

Hi there Mattley. Got your comments about the article. Would love to add what you request, but that seems a bit unclear just now. They have only just announced their formation, so that might become clearer soon - so until then I cannot really add anything about what they want to contest.
Sorry about that. I think it will need to be a work in progress.
Fair enough. It was a bit of an excuse to introduce myself, in a way. I've come across your name in a few of the articles I've looked at or made edits to. You might be interested in what I've added at Manny Shinwell.
Hi again Mattley. Looked at the Manny Shinwell article. It's looking in pretty good shape these days - nice work. What sort of areas are you interested in working on Wikidpedia then?

So far I've been mainly adding things related to my thesis, which is on the British Seafarers' Union and Amalgamated Marine Workers' Union. That's how I know stuff about Shinwell and Glasgow. Planning on adding an article on Glasgow Harbour and docks development soon as well. I've also been slowly expanding coverage of trade unions generally, adding the National Union of Railwaymen and expanding National Union of Mineworkers for example. All very dry stuff really, but I feel like I'm filling some important gaps. Might tinker with the History of British socialism page as well. Also keen on reggae and council communism but not as knowledgable. Mattley 13:09, 10 Nov 2004 (UTC)

RESPECT

edit

I see you moved RESPECT into a section for parties represented in the UK Parliament. This is a moot point - Galloway does not describe himself as representing RESPECT in Parliament (instead using "Independent Labour" and has not stood for the party in any Parliamentary election. It is true that RESPECT - or at least the SWP - describe Galloway as their MP, but in most lists, such as our list of MPs elected in the 2001 election, he is under Independent Labour. Article Licensing

edit

Hi, I've started a drive to get users to multi-license all of their contributions that they've made to either (1) all U.S. state, county, and city articles or (2) all articles, using the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike (CC-by-sa) v1.0 and v2.0 Licenses or into the public domain if they prefer. The CC-by-sa license is a true free documentation license that is similar to Wikipedia's license, the GFDL, but it allows other projects, such as WikiTravel, to use our articles. Since you are among the top 2000 Wikipedians by edits, I was wondering if you would be willing to multi-license all of your contributions or at minimum those on the geographic articles. Over 90% of people asked have agreed. For More Information:

To allow us to track those users who muli-license their contributions, many users copy and paste the "DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual" template into their user page, but there are other options at Template messages/User namespace. The following examples could also copied and pasted into your user page:

Option 1
I agree to multi-license all my contributions, with the exception of my user pages, as described below:
DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual

OR

Option 2
I agree to multi-license all my contributions to any U.S. state, county, or city article as described below:
DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual

Or if you wanted to place your work into the public domain, you could replace "DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual" with "MultiLicensePD". If you only prefer using the GFDL, I would like to know that too. Please let me know what you think at my talk page. It's important to know either way so no one keeps asking. -- Ram-Man (comment| talk)

Scottish Parliament

edit

"Parliamentry" is properly spelled with the lowercase because its acting as an adjective modifying the noun "election" (just as "Scottish" is). If the title was Scottish Parliament election, XXXX, then "Parliament" would be properly capitalised because it's part of a proper noun. See other election articles in list of election results, and you'll see the standard. Warmest regards --Neutralitytalk 01:20, Jan 26, 2005 (UTC)

P.S.: Thank you for your dedication in improving Wikipedia's coverage of Scotland - we are much indebted. Neutralitytalk 01:23, Jan 26, 2005 (UTC)

Big Jim Fae, in this instance I think Neutrality got it wrong, in that the "p" should be capitalised as they are by-elections for the Scottish Parliament, as distinct from by-elections for the Westminster Parliament that happen to be for Scottish constituencies. If the article were about the latter, it would be more appropriate for the "p" not to be capitalised. But it's not, so the "p" should be capitalised. Kind regards, jguk 08:39, 26 Jan 2005 (UTC)

== Creating Articles == Good work creating new articles. When you create things, it helps tremendously to assign them to an accurate category (see WP:CG for info). If you're really not sure about categories, at least assign your new articles a stub category (see WP:SC for info). By assigning a category, you help make sure your new articles don't get lost as 'orphans' that are not associated with related topics. Feco 19:46, 8 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Football (soccer) tables by country

edit

There is an outside chance that you may not be able to help with this, which would be unfortunate (however, I can certainly see what I'm able to do otherwise), but how do you think separate sections for different countries' football (soccer) seasons would go down? I'm particularly thinking English soccer, but the American soccer leagues may be just as useful. So, where we have separate links for Scottish football seasons, do the same for English football seasons (down to the Division One table of season 1888/89) and American football (soccer) seasons (that one needs a snappier title, but). How does this strike you as an idea? I may run it past others later to see what they think, too, but your initial input would be useful. Bobo192|Edits

Don't worry, I can easily finish what I started, time permitting. I don't know how many countries I can manage, but I'll keep on truckin'. My first, and most important, job is to finish all the Scottish tables, anyway. Bobo192|Edits

BTW, would you oppose moving your (and others) great series Scottish football seasons to Seasons in Scottish football (and the category from Category:Scottish football seasons to Category:Seasons in Scottish football as both the English and Swedish equivalents use the later form? It would be great if all stuff related to football could be standardized. :) -- Elisson Talk 15:46, 23 July 2005 (UTC)Reply

Scottish Jacobite Party

edit

How on earth did you find that registration page for SJP? I had done a search of their website, and have just done it again, and absolutely no combination of search terms of their Registers brings up that page that you found. Of course I will withdraw AfD if they are registered, although I STILL suspect that they are a hoax... and a rather expensive one for the hoaxters it seems! Or, if as you say, they are our Monster Raving Looney Party then perhaps "joke" is a better word than "hoax". I certainly know that the guy that started all this on Politicalbetting.com has revealed himself to be very pro-monarchy, and yet the SJP professes to be republican. Hi, Sorry about this. I don't know the area that well and – rather naively as it turns out – I assumed that other contributions were accurate. In future I shall be more suspicious of such things. The Alexandria, Balloch, Craigendoran, Cardross and Renton stations were all listed on the Glasgow railway stations template – as you spotted, and thanks for removing them. (In fact you forgot Craigendoran, but I've just removed it, so don't worry). Seeing these stations on the template, I included it in the articles, believing that this would be helpful. Although I have edited the template, I did not create it; the stations were originally placed on the template by its creator, TheGrappler. Notability of Heriot Vale A.F.C.

edit

You may wish to consider using a Wizard to help you create articles. See the Article Wizard.

Thank you.

The article Heriot Vale A.F.C. has been speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This was done because the article, which appeared to be about a real person, individual animal, organization (band, club, company, etc.), or web content, did not indicate how or why the subject is notable, that is, why an article about that subject should be included in Wikipedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, articles that do not indicate the notability of the subject may be deleted at any time. If you can indicate why the subject is really notable, you are free to re-create the article, making sure to cite any verifiable sources.

Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable, and for specific types of articles, you may want to check out our criteria for biographies, for web sites, for musicians, or for companies. Feel free to leave a note on my talk page if you have any questions about this. CobaltBlueTony™ talk 17:27, 16 March 2010 (UTC)Reply

Speedy deletion nomination of Scottish Amateur Football League

edit

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Scottish Amateur Football League requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about a club, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please read more about what is generally accepted as notable.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Click here to contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, you can place a request here. LFaraone 03:13, 9 April 2013 (UTC)Reply

Proposed deletion of Campaign for Socialism Group

edit

The article Campaign for Socialism Group has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Flagged as unsourced since August 2007 we know the organisation exists (0.9 probability), but we do not know from the article that it is notable, and there are no references to show it. Further, it is outdated, thus unlikely to be an accurate reflection of the current status. It also quotes a large tract of text stated to have been issued by the organisation itself and thus is likely to be a Copyright violation. The article would probably benefit from a ground up rewrite if the organisation is sufficiently notable for a place here.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion.
