Hi BlueGill, I note your expansion of the biofuels page, specifically the direct biofuels page. You mention a direct biofuel is one that can be used directly in a petroleum engine. Biogas can be also be used directly but in a standard gas engine. --Alex 08:42, 21 August 2006 (UTC)

But not without engine modifications. Of course engines are designed to run on biogas, but then it isn't a replacement for some other fuel, which seems to be what the heading is referring to. BluGill 16:30, 26 August 2006 (UTC)

Biogas

I saw your comment, I had forgotten about biogas (doubtless others as well), but I'm not sure it is a direct biofuel as it is defined (or as least as it is defined here, I have not seen the term used elsewhere, but it seems useful to have, so I decided to expand it). Biogas needs a different fuel system, and thus engine modifications. Compare to biodiesel which can be used in any diesel engine by just pulling up to the biodiesel pump instead of the D2 pump. (If you can find such a pump, but that isn't the issue here). BluGill 16:25, 26 August 2006 (UTC)

Hi BlueGill I am confused by your definition of "direct biofuel". Biogas can be used "directly" into a standard gas engine. I understand where you are coming from regarding vehicle transportation but the standard car engine is definately not the only engine that is available. I'm also not an engineer so I can't get into the specific debate on engines, however I think if you dont accept biogas as a direct biofuel you need to be clear on your engine definitions. Frankly, I'm confused about the definition - I took what someone else seemed to be saying and ran with it. Direct biofuel seems to mean that you can replace some other (fossle) fuel with the biofuel, with no change to anything else. Can you take an engine designed to run on natural gas (or any other no-bio fuel) and convert it to biogas by filling the tank with biogas? I don't know enough about biogas to answer this question, so it would be a mistake for me to have mentioned it. There is a different question: is any of the above proper to place on the biofuel page? In some form it is, but fleashing out the direct biofuel section draws out the issue that direct biofuel probably isn't the correct thing to place there. Maybe. BluGill 02:29, 2 September 2006 (UTC)
