Hi just a quick heads up to let you know why I have reverted a couple of edits where you removed referenced data. I note another editor has also done so. When you want to update date, such as census populations, that have a reference you need to replace it with another, to allow others to confirm the details. If you can't then any editor will revert you. I have only changed your edits where a reference was removed, though other editirs may revert the others. Additionally with wikilinks you only need to link the first instance; and do not need to wikilink 'well known' common words, such as England, etc, :) Richard Harvey (talk) 19:49, 26 January 2015 (UTC)

Updating census figures

Hello Bob Henshaw. I notice that you are updating many census figures for parishes and electoral wards. When doing so, please ensure that the figures obtained refer to the area stated. Often, official figures are for 2 or more parishes combined, but are published only under one parish name. This can be checked by examining parish boundaries on Ordnance Survey 1:25,000 maps. It is misleading readers to introduce census figures for 2 combined parishes into articles about only one of them. Similarly, it is not particularly useful to add information about an electoral ward population to an article about a settlement that bears the name of the ward, as the ward includes many more parishes. Without defining any area for which figures are given, those figures are in some ways meaningless. Please slow down and analyse your procedure. Thanks. Correcting ambiguous links

Hello again Bob. I see you've been removing links as a way of dealing with ambiguous destinations (as advised by the DPLbot above). However, a preferable way of dealing with the issue is to use a piped link, which allows the correct, unambiguous link to be inserted in a hidden fashion. For example, at Chideock you removed the link West Bay because it goes to a disambiguation page, but if instead you correct the wikitext by inserting a 'pipe' (one of these: | ) so it reads [[West Bay, Dorset|West Bay]], then on the article page it will appear as West Bay (hover your mouse over to see the difference) and thus provide a precise 'hidden' link to the correct page. It's only an advantage in situations where the link destination is a disambiguation page, which occurs when there are several articles with a similar name. For example, Leigh is a disambiguation page (follow the link), so if instead you want the link to direct specifically to Leigh in Dorset, you'll have to specify Leigh, Dorset, because that's the title of the appropriate destination article. However, if 'Leigh, Dorset' appears in a sentence on the article page, it might not read naturally - for example, "The only turf maze in Dorset is at Leigh, Dorset" sounds a bit daft, so a piped link can be used to create "The only turf maze in Dorset is at Leigh", which reads naturally but is also the correct link destination. Don't be afraid to ask more questions - either here, at my talk page or at the teahouse, where new editors are encouraged to ask for assistance. PaleCloudedWhite (talk) 20:24, 28 February 2015 (UTC)

I found this on the ONS website where I put in the postcode (CM9 8TF) for the village pub (The Queen's Head), selected "More areas" and "Parish" and after a couple of clicks that led me to statistics which seem to be applicable to the parish. I expect there is a more direct way to do this, but I haven't found it yet! Part of the problem seems to be that the search function doesn't accept names with apostrophes in them. (talk page stalker) A problem with using the ONS is that sometimes it combines information about more than one parish, but unfortunately doesn't make this clear in the title of the results page, so I can understand why Bob assumed Tolleshunt D'Arcy had been subsumed into another parish, if it didn't appear in search results. In my experience the ONS seem only to combine data about parishes when one of them has a population of less than 100, and the results are always published under the name of the larger parish. I think they do this for privacy purposes, so that populations in very small parishes don't have information broadcast regarding how many of them are unemployed or disabled etc. For example, if you search for information about the very small Athelhampton parish in Dorset, no results appear, and the reason is because the Athelhampton data is combined with the neighbouring and larger parish of Puddletown, and published under that (see here). This is a problem for us because, not only can we not find information about smaller parishes, but we can unwittingly give inaccurate info about larger parishes that are really two parishes combined - it's only possible to be sure what the stats are representing by studying the map on the right of the ONS results page, and comparing it to maps showing parish boundaries. However, if you can't find data for a parish, and you know from previous census data that its population was more than 100, then it might be that the ONS search facility just isn't performing properly, which does occur in some instances. For example, if you look for Sydling St Nicholas parish (population about 400) on the ONS search page, it returns no results, yet results are available, as can be seen from following the links in our Sydling St Nicholas article (I made these links, but can't remember now how I managed to find the pages...!). Civil parishes

Please take more care when changing which civil parish a village falls into - the census grouped together smaller parishes, or lumped in a small parish into a larger one. Hello, Unfortunately I'm the unusual position of feeling that all of your contributions for today, and probably a lot more if I looked into your history, need to be reverted:

• On several articles you added "(where population details can be found)" yet there are no details to be found.
• You have add a population figure for the town of Rawtenstall that the source calls a Built-up Area Subdivision and covers many neighboring villages.
• You've done the same at Haslingden, and then used a figure for the Helmshore electoral ward (that covers part of the same area) at that article.

At that point I stopped looking. As you seem to have been at this some time I'm now worried you have introduced erroneous stats in a crap-load of articles. What is going on here? At this point an admin noticeboard case seems needed? Trappedinburnley (talk) 20:05, 14 January 2016 (UTC)

I see you've opted for the "ignore it and carry-on" approach. You should be aware that (and I hope this isn't needed) the admins can delete large quantities of your edits relatively easily. Now I don't really want the hassle, and I think that everyone would prefer that you fixed your own errors. We need to discuss the issues and see how we can fix the problem. Population figures for North Yorkshire parishes

You may not be aware that the NYCC Population Estimates are usually a better source for the population of a civil parish than the ONS Neighbourhood Statistics. The census does not publish population figures for small parishes (population less than 100), of which there are many in North Yorkshire, but the county council does. Population edits - some things I'd like you to consider

Hi. As you've no doubt gathered, I disagree with some of the ways in which you're editing place articles to include populations. I need to explain some of the issues I have with some of your edits.

• please read the article you're editing. Sometimes the fact that somewhere is part of another area is already clear. It doesn't need to be explicitly stated. There are examples where, for example, the article already states that somewhere is within a specific parish. There's no need to say that again - or, in many cases, that the "population is included" (whatever that actually means) in another place. In some cases, for example Oulton Broad we actually had three different population figures in place earlier today - for a place that, if you look around, may well have it's boundary changed very soon anyway.
• further to that, you need to be aware that 2011 census parishes are not the same thing as parishes on the ground. In the case of Benacre, Suffolk the census "parish" contains the population of three distinct parishes. We really can't use that to state what the population of Benacre is - so the Waveney estimate from 2005(ish) will have to do - we don't need the 2011 number necessarily.
• in the case of Rushmere, Suffolk I don't think you can state that the population is under 100 still without any data to back that up. As it happens I've found an up to date estimate just now - and bothered to write a stub article about the place. It took a while and some research, but we now have a much better article about the place. I'm not sure we'll get anything more than that any time soon, but it's a lot better than it was. Henstead needs doing and we probably need an article on Henstead and Hulver Street as the parish - in the same way that we have an article on Brampton with Stoven - which is the place to add the population figure...
• please read and try to understand WP:CITEVAR. You're adding citation templates and using a different date style in a number of cases. In some cases there is no consensus over the date and citation style to use, but in a number of cases you're clearly in violation of CITEVAR. Again, this comes down to reading the article and looking at the existing cite style and date style being used - and then keeping to that. I'm expending a tonne of effort on articles I have on my watchlist and have edited significantly trying to keep things consistent. Whilst you're at it I'd urge you to name references. It helps them be reused - in particular, if you're adding a citation to the infobox then the ability to reuse it in the prose would be incredibly useful.

Using such terms as 'population included in' is pretty meaningless, especially since if you do a bit of research you will find the populations of the wards themselves available in the census statistics. Populations

Hi Bob. I see you do a lot of work updating population figures on places in the UK. I wonder whether I might be able to help make life a little easier for future updates.

Last year I created {{Israel populations}}, which contains all the populations of recognised places in Israel. This is then added to all the relevant articles, with the correct population identified using the switch key:

• {{Israel populations|Ashalim}} gives the population figure (652)
• {{Israel populations|Year}} gives the year (2022)
• {{Israel populations|reference}} gives the reference

These templates can be used in both the infobox and the text of the body, as you can see if you look at the code for this article. When the next set of population figures are released, you only have to update the template rather than all the articles, and the articles all update automatically. The Israel template is used on 1,200 articles and I updated the 2015 figures for all those articles in under 20 minutes. The UK has too many places to make a single template, but you could make one for each county. If you think it's a good idea, I'll create one for Suffolk as an example to show you how it works. Census records

Hi. I don't want to discourage you from adding the census records to villages but in doing so you're introducing a lot of basic errors. The population field in the infobox should only have one entry (not both 2001 and 2011) and there's no point in adding the rendudant "where the 2011 census was recorded". What does "According to the Post Office" even mean? Post Office? I appreciate you in doing this but you're adding errors en masse. In most cases you don't even add full stops and create mangled statements like "According to the Post Office the 2011 Census population was included".[1] It's not just Hampshire but I see that you're also doing this in other English counties. I'm going to run AWB through and try and sort out these errors manually but for now can you please change your approach? Bob, I've had to disable your access to Wikipedia, because we have to get your side of the story over the disruption involving your census-related edits. You can't just ignore it and carry on as if nothing has happened.

To reiterate what is in the blocking policy - we block to stop problems spiralling out of control (think of it like a medicine cabinet lock or the lid of a bottle of bleach - they stop people doing things, but for a good reason). This block is indefinite, which doesn't mean it's forever, but means it won't automatically time out.

With blocks, you can appeal them by copying {{unblock|reason=Your reason here ~~~~}} onto your talk page (which you can still edit). However, I would suggest responding to the comments at ANI here, so we can see how to resolve this. I (or another editor) can then copy them onto the thread and carry on the discussion, hopefully leading to an unblock before too long.

PS: I believe you're the same Bob that caused the same issues on the SABRE Wiki (where I previously served on the management team); I seem to recall both myself and Steven spent a considerable amount of time trying to manage issues, and the problems we found there are the same ones I'm looking at now - you do good work, but you can't work in a vacuum without effective communication, sadly. This block is a shame really as Bob was a pretty prolific places editor (albeit a little annoying by adding the same line of text "(where the 2011 Census population was included)" to numerous articles). It appears he only ever made two edits to a talk page, both were this very one I am writing on ([4]). Yes I agree. On the face of it, it seems like Bob was operating in complete isolation without ever looking at his talk page and recognising the issues created by his edits. But there is at least one acknowledgment I have seen from Bob on this page, which seems to be written by someone approachable and happy to work with others.
