5/7 RAR

Thank you for your contributions to the 5th/7th Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment article. Unfortunately, I had to revert most of these changes, however, as they did not conform to Wikipedia's standards in the form they were in. Largely this was due to the fact that they were unreferenced, but also because they went into too much detail for the type of article that they were added to. The 5/7 RAR article is mainly an overview style article so it is undue weight to discuss the APC trials in the level of detail that was added. They would, however, perhaps be more relevant to an article that focused upon the mechanisation of the Australian Army.

Having said all of this, I hope that you won't be too discouraged by this and I would like to encourage you to continue to contribute to the encyclopedia. A few general principles to remember are:

• Use third person prose (when adding an entry into the encyclopedia it is best not to use first person prose, even if you were a party to an event);
• Always try to provide a citation to a reliable source so that the information can be verified;
• Try to follow the Manual of Style.

Recent edits

Please read these comments before continuing to make your edits to the 5/7 RAR page. While I'm sure your edits are in good faith, they breach a number of Wikipedia polices.For instance WP:OR and also WP:UNDUE. The encyclopedia requires editors to provide citations to reliable sources for their information. I understand that you were there, and that's great, however, it does not meet the encyclopedia's requirements for verification. You can use the experience you have gained to help you in finding the sources. If they don't exist, then unfortunately it really shouldn't be included. In regards to the information about the trials, that is good information, however, as stated above it is discussed in undue weight for the type of article that 5/7 RAR is. As I stated earlier, perhaps you would consider writing it into an article on mechanisation in the Australian Army, as that would seem to me to be a better location for it. — AustralianRupert (talk) 08:23, 2 February 2010 (UTC)

Vandalism

Your recent edits on 5th/7th Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment are not constructive and vandalism such as this edit [1] breach many of Wikipedia's policies. If you wish to engage in a meaningful conversation about content I'm happy to do so, however, abusing me or any other editor of Wikipedia is not acceptable. Concerning your edits to the article 5th/7th Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment

Regardless of your opinions on the matter the facts of the encyclopedia dictate that we all assume good faith, we all behave in a civil manner, and we all refrain from nonconstructive edits. Regardless of your views on the article, its sourcing, or its format, you are bound to our policies for as long as you edit here.

Edits like the ones that you have been making are nonconstructive, and a check of the history for the page 5th/7th Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment shows similar instances of bad faith. If this continues then the next time such an edit occurs in the article you will be blocked for a period of 24 hours for making edits that are either nonconstructive to the article or interpreted as vandalism, or both as the case may be. Hi, I agree with what TomStar81 posted above. While there's a lot of merit in what you're adding to this article, material on Wikipedia needs to be sourced to books, newspapers, etc. I believe that David Horner's book on the RAR Duty First: A History of the Royal Australian Regiment covers 5/7 RAR's mechanisation trails and the deployment to the Bowral region, and you could draw on this to provide supporting citations. If you have any battalion newsletters and the like they'd make fantastic references to this interesting period in the battalion's history. Nick-D (talk) 06:22, 4 February 2010 (UTC)

As per the above. AustralianRupert has been nothing if not helpful to you Bondigold and your childish response speaks volumes. Of course while I welcome other editors to work on MILHIST articles, you need to read the Manual of Style and conform with the policy of the Wiki community. Several suggestions have been made as to how you might add the material that you have in a manner which conforms with these policies and it is up to you as to whether or not this occurs. Just remember: while you may have 'been there' other editors have too. The requirement for citation is not a policy designed to frustrate, but to ensure that standards are set and maintained. I would have though that that is something a former member of the Royal Australian Regiment would understand... Anotherclown (talk) 08:50, 4 February 2010 (UTC)

Query about sending emails

Hello, Bondigold. Based on the edits you have made to the 5/7 RAR article I think that part of the issue here is that there is some confusion about communication channels on Wikipedia. You have asked me to email you, and have stated that I have not done this. Please be advised that leaving messages on your Talk page (i.e. this one) is how people send you emails in Wikipedia (in this regard you have received a number of said emails). Likewise you can send emails to other editors by putting a message on their talk page. Some users may choose to link their talk page to an offsite email, however, this is not a requirement and is probably not favoured by most editors for privacy reasons.
