Wharf names
editCan you please explain why "Manly ferry wharf" is a better article title than the official and actual name "Manly Wharf". Please don't say "long convention". Because "that's how we always do it" is not a good reason. --Merbabu (talk) 09:37, 1 August 2020 (UTC)
- User:Merbabu, xx ferry wharf is the longstanding convention for how wharves are named, and is how all other Sydney wharves are named. You were within your rights to move, but per WP:BRD, the onus is on you to gain a consensus to change something that has been been stable for a long period of time if you wish the article to be renamed.
- The current format provides clarity. There are or were other commercial wharves in the vicinity of some ferry wharves on or around Balmain, Cockatoo Island, Darling Harbour and Manly for example. It's like with railway stations, Wynyard railway station is referred to by TfNSW as Wynyard Station, but by having all Wikipedia articles named in a consistent xx railway station format, it means it is clear should there be any other stations; be they bus stations, fire stations, sheep stations, weather stations etc. Bromptop (talk) 04:04, 2 August 2020 (UTC)
- So, apart from local "convention" and the highly unlikely scenario that someone confuses Wynyard Station with its non-existent bus, fire, sheep, or weather station, is there any other reason that we should overrule WP:COMMONNAME? --Merbabu (talk) 07:24, 2 August 2020 (UTC)
- I was using that as a hypothetical example. Buy by way of a practical example, in Brisbane there is Roma Street busway station and Roma Street railway station. The railway station is referred to as Roma Street Station by Translink, but having that as the name for the railway station would be ambiguous. The established naming convention of xx ferry wharf is clear and unambiguous, I see no benefit in changing. But if you feel strongly enough about it, suggest you go through the RM process. Until resolved, I suggest edits like this are best avoided. Possibly a waste of time...unless you are trying to solidify your "convention". thanks. --Merbabu (talk) 08:01, 2 August 2020 (UTC)
- Per WP:BRD and WP:COMMONNAME I've reverted a number of new changes, for example [here https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Fairlight_(ferry)&diff=prev&oldid=970769297]. --Merbabu (talk) 08:05, 2 August 2020 (UTC)
- Manly Wharf is now a disambiguation page, thus no article should point to it. Bromptop (talk) 08:07, 2 August 2020 (UTC)
- I suggest your sudden intensive editing of the disputed content is a bad faith move to solidify your "convention" position. You rarely edit wikipedia. Now you are racing around on one single issue. Odd --Merbabu (talk) 08:08, 2 August 2020 (UTC)
- In other words, would I kindly go away and leave you to it? No. As I previously stated, the WP:ONUS is on you to make the case for change, not me for wanting to retain the status quo. Bromptop (talk) 08:18, 2 August 2020 (UTC)
- Ah no, it would be for both of us to stop making the changes until it was resolved. --Merbabu (talk) 08:25, 2 August 2020 (UTC)
