- Dave, Your are correct, I spent a lot of time over several years researching Charles Oliver Brown. First of all, I am in no way related to Dr. Brown if that is one of your concerns. We stumbled on Dr. Brown when we were doing research for a reenactment (1999) of General Sherman's speech at the Michigan Military Academy (1879). Understanding Sherman's enormous popularity at the time I was interested why General Sherman had this young pastor sit with him on the speaker's platform. I believe Brown's writings and speeches as a minister after the Civil War are extremely noteworthy. As you will see from my additions to the opening paragraph, Brown is cited as late as 2008. Needless to say the highly publicized blackmail case in San Francisco still needs more research. We ([www.gwbhs.com GWBHS]) are hoping the Wikipedia article will surface more information on Sherman's speech at the MMA and Brown's blackmail case.
I believe Brown's article needs to be reviewed. When Fred Shapiro was compiling the Yale Book of Quotations, he called three times to review my research on Dr. Brown, General Sherman and "War is Hell." Shapiro included a reference to Dr. Brown on page 708 of the Yale book.
