Conflict of Interest
editHello! DO you know Laura Myntti or have any professional connection to her? Thank you in advance for your answer.ThatMontrealIP (talk) 09:45, 28 September 2019 (UTC)
I don't know Laura Myntti and have no professional connection with her. I am interested in modern art and came across her page while googling. WP said there was issues with it and being relatively new to editing I thought I would hone my editing skills by attempting to improve it. It looks like I didn't all that well, even though it would seem that she has had her works exhibited in galleries and museums over the course of time, so I am not sure how noteworthy a person needs to be before they are considered WP 'notable'. In my humble opinion and of course I bow to your considerable experience, I still think it is rather harsh to delete her completely as I found enough references to warrant at least keeping her. One reference I recently found and I didn't include in my edit "https://www.oakpark.com/News/Articles/1-18-2011/River-Forest-artist-co_chairs-UNICEF's-upcoming-gala-benefit/". I reckon this in itself makes her notable! Bzcons44 (talk) 12:32, 28 September 2019 (UTC)
- Thanks. We have a general notability guideline, called WP:GNG, and a specific notability guideline, called WP:ARTIST. You might have a look at those, as well as what constitutes a reliable source, which is what gives rise to notability. Many of the claims in the article, like the museum collections, appear to be false as they do not verify when checked.ThatMontrealIP (talk) 12:53, 28 September 2019 (UTC)
Hi. I've checked out WP:GNG, WP:ARTIST and WP:RS
I must refute that Anchorage Daily News is a small town newspaper as it has a daily readership of over 50,000. This does constitute "coverage in reliable sources that are independent of the subject".
I believe I have identified reliable sources as described in WP:RS. For example, I've come across [1]. Self-Help Graphics is the center where Laura Myntti was invited to do a nine-color silkscreen.
Reading WP:ARTIST, is it an issue that the "Artist biography article template" has not been followed as described in WP:ARTIST?
This has been a helpful exercise and I've learnt much from it.
However, I still think that Laura Myntti has sufficient reliable and independent content to warrant a page. We need to pardon her initial Faux Pas attempting to get paid assistance.
As you say, we are all volunteers. Bzcons44 (talk) 05:55, 29 September 2019 (UTC)
- I encourage you to go back and read the above policies and guidelines again. "Self Help Graphics" is not a valid source: it is selling something. It is an example of the worst kind of source. Re the Anchorage Daily News, what WP:GNG is basically looking for is a preponderance of in-depth coverage in independent publications that show without a doubt that the person is notable. A bunch of event announcements or profiles in tiny local newspapers doesn't cut it. Have a look at WP:GNG, WP:ARTIST and WP:RS again. Also, for someone with less than 20 edits to your credit, you are doing surprisingly well with correcting reference formats, arguing for neutral point of view, providing edit summaries that reference the BLP policy, and so on. It's almost like you might have been an editor in an a past life! ThatMontrealIP (talk) 13:46, 29 September 2019 (UTC)
Assistance needed to create a new article
editWith the guidance that I have received from ThatMontrealIP I now want to try my hand at creating a new article. Besides my interest in modern art I am also a lead guitarist in a group of musicians. We believe that some of the songs we have written and performed could become popular if they were heard by the wider world. When I googled "letting independent and unsigned artists spread their music" I found Bandcamp and DittoMusic. I also found UnsignedOnly [2] and Tunecrank [3]. All four of these give budding musicians an opportunity to have their music heard. Then the thought occurred to me - why do two of these have a Wikipedia article and the other two don't? Also being a budding Wikipedia editor, I thought that perhaps either UnsignedOnly or Tunecrank could be a good place for me to create my first article. My reasoning is that if Bandcamp and DittoMusic warrant an article then surely so do UnsignedOnly and Tunecrank. I believe these two have gained sufficiently significant attention by the world at large and over a period of time, and are not outside the scope of Wikipedia. Delving deeper into each I believe I have evidence from reliable and independent sources to gauge this attention and therefore fulfil WP:GNG. Do you agree I should have a go at one of them?
Speedy deletion nomination of Draft:Tunecrank
editIf this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.
You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.
A tag has been placed on Draft:Tunecrank, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G11 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the page seems to be unambiguous advertising which only promotes a company, group, product, service, person, or point of view and would need to be fundamentally rewritten in order to become encyclopedic. Please read the guidelines on spam and Wikipedia:FAQ/Organizations for more information.
If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator. DGG ( talk ) 07:08, 5 October 2019 (UTC)
