Hi, Calendar5.
I have looked over your contributions to Battle of the Head of Passes, and wish to pass along a couple of comments. I am particularly interested because I have been the primary editor for the Battle of Forts Jackson and St. Philip, and have noted the interest you express in writing about the capture of New Orleans. I hope to encourage you to do so, and the present article suggests that you are capable of doing an excellent job. I have had a more or less free hand writing articles about the navies in the Civil War, but now it looks like I will have some competition.
1. An elementary suggestion is that you use the {{ship}} template for giving the first occurrence of ship names. This will ensure consistent formatting, and it is a lot easier than entering the links and then italicizing the name by the usual methods of Wikipedia. I have edited the article to use the template, so you can refer to it to see how it is done. Don't worry about the two or three red links that have been created; they can be regarded as suggestions for future articles.
2. It would be a good idea to eliminate as many adjectives as you can without rendering the article unintelligible. This is not only an issue of style, but it is close to an area of Wikipedia policy. The problem is that it is difficult to use a lot of adjectives without expressing a Point of View (usually abbreviated POV, always deprecated). Most of them are unnecessary anyway. More generally, try to use as few words as possible. This will be even more of an issue when you write up the capture of New Orleans; having found this much material for such an insignificant event as the Battle of the Head of Passes, try to imagine how many words you will use to write about something that is truly important.
In closing, I want to urge you to continue your expressed interest in New Orleans. Although it appears that you don't need my help, I will offer it anyway; I will be glad to assist you in any way I can.

Generic Civil War interest
editHi, Frank: You may or may not be aware that a group of editors is engaged in a project to improve a selected set of Civil War articles in order to acknowledge the 150th anniversary (is the word sesquicentennial?) of the event. The work group or task force is Wikipedia:WikiProject Military history/American Civil War task force/Operation Brothers at War. Although I am not going to do much for them except hang around the edges and offer occasional suggestions, I think it is a worthy idea and will encourage others to participate. That is why I am writing this note to you.
Of particular interest to you is the recommended inclusion of the capture of New Orleans in the list of items to be covered; when I saw this, I immediately thought of you. This provides an excellent opportunity, as well as an excuse, to develop a New Orleans article that is as comprehensive as, for example, the Siege of Vicksburg. As I see it, your article on the Head of the Passes and the one on Forts Jackson and St. Philip can be linked or otherwise incorporated into an article that covers the whole campaign. (As I think of it, perhaps linking is the only option, as anything else would make it impossibly long.)
Even if you choose not to work on New Orleans, involving as it does deadlines and other constraints, you may find it useful to get involved in the project in some other way. There is only a small group signed up at present, I recognize their names for frequent contributions to Civil War articles, they are looking for others to help, and you may find it to be fun to work with them.

Latest direction in the land of Calendar5
editAdditions to the Capture of New Orleans article is pretty much done. I will have some friends edit it. I have just evaluated your article against the B-class criteria; you didn't ask for this, but I did it anyway. In the process, I made a few minor tweaks. Ordinarily, I wouldn't bother to pass on this information, but I want to take the opportunity to express my high opinion of what you have done. You may consider taking it to a higher level, GA or even FA class (I don't usually do GA or FA reviews).
By the way, I do not like the renaming that someone has done ("Siege" for "Capture"), but I recently burned my fingers on a renaming issue, and will not open a debate.

The Yazoo River file I uploaded was moved to Wikipedia Commons, and in the process the source data and other information provided in the original upload was lost. I find I can no longer edit the data included in the original upload. The image is originally from the Library of Congress, Control Number: 99447413, but I have no idea how to add that information at this point. Frank (talk) 15:26, 24 April 2011 (UTC)
