I think you might have a tiger by the tail here. E.W. Clay seems to have been - in his own way - a fairly respectable cartoonist in his day.

But the "Life in Philadelphia" series casts him as a northern apologist for slavery.

I'd probably write the article on E.W. Clay and then include the Life in Philadelphia as part of that. Frankly, it might be too difficult as your first article to write this without offending somebody, but you are welcome to try.
