The EU is not yet a political union. There are some regulations that most (but not all!) member states ratified and/or implemented, but still, the EU is far away from being a political union, since:
- every state still has its own, individual government and policies - law restrictions issued by the EU do not exist for every case, often the national law is followed
We can not write about the EU as a political union just because there are SOME political commonalities. There is - or at least should be - a common policy on the protection of our environment, for instance, but we don't share politics in general!!!
I can not make a valid reference entry for what I learned at school (in Europe) and university (in the United States), but the term political union simply isn't correct in this context. So, neither the US nor Europe advance this view!
