Colosseum is elliptical, not oval - reply
editHi Carlo. Nice to chat with you. I assume your first language is Italian and not English? I only ask because if you look up the definition of elliptical in a dictionary, you will find that an ellipse is an oval shape, but one that has a specific context describing the outline of a body in motion (like the earth) in motion around a fixed point (like the sun). For something to be elliptical, it needs to be an oval shape, but also have 2 locations in reference to the fixed point, one at its closest (perihelion) and one at it furthest (aphelion). See this dictionary definition: https://www.vocabulary.com/dictionary/elliptical#:~:text=The%20word%20elliptical%20is%20derived,circle%2C%20stretched%20into%20an%20oval. - Hi Carlo, I hope you are well? I did some further investigating as you suggested, and I can confirm that although the Colosseum design may have begun as an ellipse, when the Romans started to build it, the audience viewing requirements altered it from a pure ellipse into more of an oval shape. So it isn't purely elliptical, and I would suggest that it fits better as being described as oval in shape. Oatley2112 (talk) 22:19, 5 December 2022 (UTC)
