Three Questions for Relevant Articles

edit

Article 1 - N.H.L Notebook Investigates Racial Slurs

q - Is everything in the article relevant to the article topic? Is there anything that distracted you?

a - Everything in this article is relevant to the article topic. It discusses the use of racial slurs from McCarthy which is relevant to his NHL career as he was suspended from his team, the Washington Capitals. The article focuses on the allegation made against McCarthy and his response to the situation and denies the allegation as he mentions his interactions in the past with racial slurs himself. There is nothing in this article that was distracting. It provided supporting topics for the argument and gave points of view from both sides of the story.

q- Is the article neutral? Are there any claims, or frames, that appear heavily biased toward a particular position?

a - This article is neutral and there are no claims that appear heavily bias. The article provides two sides to Sandy McCarthy's allegation of using a racial slur on the ice, showing the lack of bias. It showed the situation in facts in regards to what took place on the ice and then provided Sandy's personal response to the allegations made against him. It provided an all round, diverse discussion to the situation as opposed to a one sided argument or bias.

q - Are there viewpoints that are overrepresented, or underrepresented?

a - Viewpoints of the article are evenly represented and balanced between the facts of what took place on the ice between Sandy McCarthy and the other NHL player as well as McCarthy's personal view of what took place. The article does not stress that McCarthy did or did not make the slur, but rather on the facts they were provided from the all round view of the situation that resulted in McCarthy's suspension.

Article 2 - Tie Domie vs. Sandy McCarthy

q - Is everything in the article relevant to the article topic? Is there anything that distracted you?

a - Everything in this article is relevant to the article topic and also ties into the previous article being based around the use of racial slurs. In this article, it discusses the racial slurs that McCarthy underwent during his NHL career, specifically coming from Toronto maple leafs goon, Tie Domie. This article is very short and to the point, discussing the events that occurred between Domie and McCarthy.

q - Is the article neutral? Are there any claims, or frames, that appear heavily biased toward a particular position?

a - This article is not biased in any way. It simply states the events that occurred and word's between the two NHL players and their opinions on the subject.

q - Are there viewpoints that are overrepresented, or underrepresented?

a - I believe that this article underrepresented McCarthy's side of the story. Although the article was short and to the point with the facts and events that occurred between the two players, it did not discuss how McCarthy took the comment knowing his biracial and indigenous heritage.

Article 3 - Slammers Hire Assistant Coach

q - Is everything in the article relevant to the article topic? Is there anything that distracted you?

a - This article discusses McCarthy's hockey coaching career after he retired from the NHL. This is relevant to the topic because it discusses another aspect of the athlete's life post NHL. It also talks about what type of coach he was.

q- Is the article neutral? Are there any claims, or frames, that appear heavily biased toward a particular position?

a - I do believe this article is unbiased even though it is based around the statement made from the team that hired him as a coach. The article states that there were four other individuals considered for the role and the article looked at that objectively.

q - Are there viewpoints that are overrepresented, or underrepresented?

a - The article is short and to the point and is mainly focused around the team's statement of hiring McCarthy into the role of Assistant Coach. At this point in his coaching career, there were no other view points mentioned in the article that were opposed to his new role.

Article 4 - Sandy McCarthy

q - Where does the information come from? Are these neutral sources? If biased, is that bias noted?

a - This information comes from the Barrie Sports Hall of Fame Society website. This is not a biased website as it provides information on Barrie, ON best athletes and lists the facts and highlights of their career to justify their HOF status.

q - Is everything in the article relevant to the article topic? Is there anything that distracted you?

a - This article is relevant to the topic. It looks into McCarthy's hockey career from a young age and shows his development in the sport as he gets older. Again, this article provides a lot of facts, limiting the amount of content that is distracting.

q - Is the article neutral? Are there any claims, or frames, that appear heavily biased toward a particular position?

a - This article is neutral because it states the events of McCarthy's career through time. The article looks at it objectively and sticks to facts that are important, relevant, and indisputable.
