A US Work pre 1923 is Public domain.

Assuming that both works (statute and photo) are first published in the US , I don't see an issue.

Cite the sources used, and use the credit line the book gives for the indivdiaul photos (if any).

Post Office Murals

edit

Hey Carptrash. Nice to meet you. As you probably noticed I have been adding to the list of Post Office Murals artists. I noticed that you started the list back in Dec 2011. I'm getting most of my names from http://postalmuseum.si.edu/indiansatthepostoffice/mural12.html. I'm tempted to put a reference with each artist (at least for the ones I have added and the ones I will be adding). I don't know how long the list will get or if that is a problem. Please let me know what you think. I appreciate your efforts and wish to collaborate. Ed aka Buster Seven Talk 20:22, 9 December 2014 (UTC)Reply

List of Post Office Murals title

Thanks for starting this article. Would you consider a name change to "List of U.S. post office murals"? - "U.S." for obvious reasons, plus lowercase "post office murals" per WP:TITLE (see: United States post office murals). Just a thought. 32.218.34.24 (talk) 00:47, 15 December 2014 (UTC)Reply

...I did not see that you running for anything there, or elsewhere for that matter..."

Well it isn't like I didn't want to be in the running for military historian of the year, but the community hasn't nominated me for the award in years (like four or five to be precise) . I had hoped I would at least be nominated this year, but it didn't happen. I guess that's life, and its not the end of the world. At the end of the day it doesn't much change who I am or what I do here, the process merely demonstrates the barometer the project's contributors places on who has done what to warrant a nod and a shot at the year's top awards. TomStar81 (Talk) 03:00, 19 December 2014 (UTC)Reply

I took a glance,TomStar81, at your user page to see what would occur to me and what happened is that I'd find it difficult, if not impossible, to support anyone who feels that Pres. O is holding this nation hostage. Ideally this sort of thing should not make a difference, but I don't live in an ideal world.Carptrash (talk) 03:12, 19 December 2014 (UTC)Reply
Everyone be entitled to their opinion, and I grant that this may stop people from looking at me seriously, although you'd think that since Wikipedia operates mostly as a meritocracy there would be some room for forgiveness in people's hearts. Hell I know editors I hardly get along with on here at all and yet I ask them to help when I know that they know better than I do on a given matter. Still, though, you're probably right that it likely isn't doing me any favors. TomStar81 (Talk) 03:19, 19 December 2014 (UTC)Reply

the hub-bub of the holidays we'll have to converse about how to gather Images, etc. I understand that because the artist's were government employees their Images are Public Domain I just don't know the "How to..." of moving them from where I find them on the Internet to WP:Commons. There is so much to do and I think useful info is getting lost (by me) in the process of creating the List. I'm collecting Artist Bio stuff at User talk:Buster7/sandbox for future work and, not always, but every now and then, when I go to an Existing Artist WP Article, I'll add info about the mural...but only sometimes. My way seems haphazard and sporadic. I guess I'm asking how you store and categorize all the gobs of info that comes in front of you when your doing a project like The List. I guess I know The List is a long term commitment and I want to start doing things the easiest way. Like I said...mid-January or so...```Buster Seven Talk 16:51, 19 December 2014 (UTC)Reply

OK - I'll keep that in mind if/when I take another look. (If they haven't been fixed already, I can go ahead and fix the ones I did yesterday.)

Happy to be of help - it's an interesting subject. I like the way the list is coming along. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 17:18, 20 December 2014 (UTC)Reply

I've fixed 'em both. As to photos, there's not a lot I can do on that front. (I can try and get some shots of the murals in Arlington in situ...that's the only post office near at hand to me. I can eventually hit some of the ones in the valley - Strasburg, Luray - but that will take more time, and wherewithal that I don't have at the moment.)
What I can do is to add NRHP designations to the list, as I did with Arlington. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 19:16, 20 December 2014 (UTC)Reply
Perhaps add a NRHP in the notes? I suspect that most of these post offices will be there, so perhaps it needs another column? Carptrash (talk)

Agreed - it looks great. Maybe a way to distinguish between listed buildings and buildings which are contributing properties to the historic district? Unless the column is for links to articles, in which case never mind. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 20:06, 20 December 2014 (UTC)Reply

What I am thinking, and this NEVER makes it so, is that a YES in that column, if it's a blue link could be a link to either an article about the building or the district that it is a part of. Make sense? Carptrash (talk) 20:18, 20 December 2014 (UTC)Reply

I wonder if you (and any friendlies) could swing by there and take a look and tell me what it needs. If you add something, do it in small bites so I can see how it gets done and I can mimic it in the future for other articles. If you could add an "Infobox for artist"...that would be great. No, to quote Sargent Schultz, "I know nothing!" about that interesting site. Another goldmine? Meanwhile, having 3,000 articles on my watch list, I have been enticed into creating a new article, New Formalism (architecture) - out of a discussion at Stripped Classicism. And then Mom woke up in the middle of everything, so it has been a wild morning so far. And yes, our, "little" project has been immensely satisfying and is bordering on a life long venture. I have a binder somewhere of my mural slides, but have not been able to locate it since my move. My guru was fond of saying. "Life is supposed to be interesting. This is how the universe expands." Yes, I agree. There is no foreseeable end to this project and it already has expanded my life...WP and real. My wife and I have even started to write a rough draft for a novel, The Muralist, about a multi-personality serial killer that is as charming as can be until someone criticizes his work. Love, Sex and great tunes from the '30s and '40s (for the Movie adaptation). He goes from town to town over the life of "the Section of Fine Arts" assuming different names (there are so many interesting ones to choose from) and wardrobes and interesting "peccadilloes---->(busterism). This morning the disam bot told me about 5 or 6 which I took care of. But it reminded me to let you know why I am adding (artist) and letting it "show up" on The List. In a week or two we will be done with the basic Info and we will {individually) "wander" around the List, fixing things, filling in gaps, researching for NRHP listings (two of the PO disams from this morning are NRHP but I didn't take the time to add them to The List, etc. etc. We will continue our collaboration and chop away at the many options available as to "what to do first". For me, it changes everyday. So...I thought that by letting {artist) show up on The List I would create article for those artists first...gotta start somewhere. Ida Abelman

edit

I took the Draft:Ida Abelman articles live just a minute ago and within seconds a BOT clamped onto it. I could use some of your expertise and maybe a re-write. Thanks. Buster Seven Talk 14:36, 11 January 2015 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for your help w/ Ida above. How do YOU create a new bio article? Do you create it off-WP and then cut-n-paste it here? In order to forego all the potential problems that a new article experiences, I've started another new mural artist article at User talk:Buster7/Sandbox-Rosa's law. I figure this way I can work on the article trouble free, you can help me understand better than the other (more formal) way, and when its ready, I'll just Cut-n-paste it into mainspace. Good Idea? or is there a better way? Buster Seven Talk 15:11, 12 January 2015 (UTC)Reply
I moved User talk:Buster7/Sandbox-Rosa's law. I will now create asst "User:B7/I.Ema.Artist" type pages. Buster Seven Talk
I saw that you have created a "Works in Progress (WiP)" section on your User Page. Great Idea! I have done the same on mine. This way we can check each others work so we don't duplicate efforts. Ive also added a mention of the "WiP" pages at the Mens List and at the Womens List. My problem is that I forget where I put stuff...I need a note to remind me where the note that reminds me is.... I know I started a "WiP" page on Frances Ankrom somewhere but I can't remember where. Did Edith Barry go live? TRA!Buster Seven Talk 15:50, 14 January 2015 (UTC)Reply

Edith Barry

edit

The book Wall-to-Wall America says that she was from Kennebunk----"Edith Barry was a local girl." (Pg. 272)....not from nearby Kennebunkport. I'll await your confirmation before changing the article and the List#Maine entry which states the mural is in Kennebunkport.Buster Seven Talk 08:58, 15 January 2015 (UTC)Reply

I have two copies, hard cover and paperback, of Wall to Wall America and can't find either. Go ahead and add that info and reference. I believe that she was a KKennebunk "woman" and to a girl, having moved there after she was married. But it is a nice quote, so belongs. Carptrash (talk) 15:28, 15 January 2015 (UTC)Reply
Also, this [[2]] is a sort of amusing bit about trying to move the article. Carptrash (talk) 15:34, 15 January 2015 (UTC)Reply
So...I guess the message is that That way of creating an article is fraught with problems and should be avoided. Drat! Buster Seven Talk 19:48, 15 January 2015 (UTC)Reply

A way around it

edit
  1. . you create a draft...like this...User:Buster7/Joseph Fleck,
  2. . when its ready, you cut and paste the whole thing,
  3. . put "Joseph Fleck" in the search box which will bring up the "There is no-such article" page,
  4. . create the new page...and bingo...Bob's your uncle. Buster Seven Talk 19:58, 15 January 2015 (UTC)Reply
  5. . you put {-{db-user}-} on the draft...and in seconds it disappears.
Joseph Fleck has gone "live". ...User:Buster7/Joseph Fleck has been terminated. Buster Seven Talk 23:20, 15 January 2015 (UTC),Reply

Belle Baranceanu

edit

I spent a little time this morning at Belle Baranceanu and I have a general "Should I make a change" question. I think the Sections are miss-labeled. What is called "Notes" should be called "References" and what is called "References" should be called "See also". Wouldn't that be more consistent with most other WP "bios"??? Buster Seven Talk 14:41, 21 January 2015 (UTC)Reply

I just replaced the "Notes" heading with "References". 2 of the 3 previous "references" were included in the notes section already. One got left off. Carptrash (talk) 16:52, 21 January 2015 (UTC)Reply
So...making changes like that are more in line with the accepted Method of Style for these bios. Thanks! Buster Seven Talk 17:00, 21 January 2015 (UTC)Reply

Dead White men

edit

Responding to your question on my talk page, When the prior editor wrote that "Sculptor Janet Scudder had DWM's roles as subjects for sculpture in mind when ........." they were presuming to summarize what was thereafter quoted. However neither the actual term used "DWM"[sic], nor the term 'deceased white men' were actually used by the author quoted, thus effectively making the quote the opinion of the editor/quoter, not the person quoted. Thank you for not reverting my edit. QuintBy (talk) 04:33, 23 January 2015 (UTC)Reply

Strange pairing

edit

What a bizarre juxtaposition it is to build a fountain featuring centaurs and mythical creatures alongside a sculpture group depicting a historical event. Certainly, Saint-Gaudens loved to insert his goddesses, but they represented the goals/ideals/accomplishments of the sculpture's subject. I'm sure there are other examples of strange pairings, but this strikes me as particularly odd. == BoringHistoryGuy (talk) 18:26, 12 February 2015 (UTC)Reply

these two groups were done a very different times and were only paired here for reasons that line in someone else's brain. And yes, it is a bit disconcerting where you are there. Carptrash (talk) 19:34, 14 February 2015 (UTC)Reply

Your application at WP:SLR

edit

Hello Carptrash, I saw your application, but I'm sorry that the project is now defunct. I tried to close it when the Sri Lanka Civil War ended, but some people felt it was better to keep it open, but de facto nobody was watching it, so your application got overlooked. I just saw it now that I'm writing a comment about it at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Editor Retention#where else would an exclusive, member-restricted WikiProject help? . — Sebastian 10:26, 14 February 2015 (UTC)Reply

Thank you for getting back to me about the WikiProject Sri Lanka Reconciliation. Sri Lanka and what happened there has always been a difficult thing for me. I lived in Sri Lanka - then Ceylon. from 1952 until 1965 and found the Civli war to be a very distressing topic. but on that I would on occasion want to engage in. Anyway, thai you for the update. Einar aka Carptrash (talk) 19:40, 14 February 2015 (UTC)Reply
That must have been an interesting time, during the first steps of a newly independent country. Since you have a serious interest, I will approve your application, and since I believe it very unlikely that there will be objections, you would be a member just in time for the project to close. When I wrote my message to you, I felt ambivalent about using the word "sorry". On one hand, I am sorry that it ended, because for me it was a very meaningful and rewarding time. On the other hand, the reason that it ended is that the civil war ended, which is even more than I dared to dream when we started the project. — Sebastian 20:25, 14 February 2015 (UTC)Reply

Hello Buster7, WP:WER seems like a very worthwhile endeavour; thanks for participating there.
Take a look at Einar's application; isn't this a nice poem? I am sad that the application got overlooked for so long; there was still a little bit of action going on on the talk page, where Carptrash would have fit in nicely. I am now going to drink to you and your friend's health with a cup of Dilmah tea from Nilagama! — Sebastian 17:41, 15 February 2015 (UTC)Reply

Hello Carptrash, I herewith notify you that your application has been unanimously accepted. (Well, since nobody else is active anymore, there was only one vote, mine. But since you were curious about our process, I wanted to give you our traditional wording.) I am happy to add you to our member list before I close the project down. In the hopefully unlikely event that the project would become needed again, you participation would be much appreciated. — Sebastian 03:23, 22 February 2015 (UTC)Reply

Alexander Stirling Calder

Stirling Calder died January 7, 1945, which is now more than 70 years ago, so are images of his works now free at last? == BoringHistoryGuy (talk) 20:14, 14 February 2015 (UTC)Reply

When he died is not important. Though an interesting thing to take note of. Any of his works created prior to 1923 are copyright free. The ones that he did between than and his death are still under copyright IF they were renewed after 27 years (or something like that). Very few sculptors, in my experience, did the renewal thing. However to be sure one need to figure out the year that a work need to be renewed in and then check the records for that year. I have a process for which to do that, it is a bit cumbersome and not exactly available for another month or two. Until after my eye surgery is done and I have glasses that work. Likely you can figure this stuff out yourself faster. Carptrash (talk) 18:49, 15 February 2015 (UTC)Reply

  Editor of the Week
Your ongoing efforts to improve the encyclopedia have not gone unnoticed: You have been selected as Editor of the Week for sterling work on postal articles, and helping another editor develop a "niche". Thank you for the great contributions! (courtesy of the Wikipedia Editor Retention Project)

User:Buster7 submitted the following nomination for Editor of the Week:

I nominate Einar aka Carptrash as Editor of the Week. In early Dec I contacted him about editing the Post Office Murals article which he had started back in Dec 2011. As is the way of things here at WP we began to collaborate on a new artcle, the List of United States post office murals. We both immersed ourselves into creating the article and had a wonderful time. I learned many new things from "Carp" and know I will learn many more as we both expand articles related to "The List". I was searching for something more formidable and long-lasting to do as an editor and, with his sharing and input and mentoring, I have found my "niche". Thank you, Einar, for the 285 articles you have created.

hard at work
Thank you everyone and all who stumble across this. It will eventually make its way over to my User Page. First tho, I have cataract and glaucoma surgery in a few weeks to get through. Buster, in his generous note, mentions our list. For me that project was a god send because I could do a lot of work using a magnifying glass - since what I was engaged in was essentially data entry from one or two sources to wikipedia. However more complex editing is sort of out-of-reach for a bit and so receiving this very meaningful award is a very gratifying way to slip into semi-retirement until surgery, recovery and then new glasses have done what they are going to do. Few of us (wikipedia editors) do what we do for the recognition involved so when something like this comes along it is - for me at least - doubly or triply - significant. I did recently order and receive a dictionary of American Women artists of the twentieth century, and have discovered perhaps 7 of the 70 or so muralists that Buster and have lined up for articles, a disappointing number, but some movement forward and something to look forward to in the foreseeable future. An much as such a thing exists. Carptrash (talk) 19:16, 15 February 2015 (UTC)Reply

Ha-ha. Within seconds it is up for deletion 'cause it has no references. What a load of crap. How do new editors deal with this insulting way of informing them that something is a miss. There has to be a better way. . Buster Seven Talk 15:20, 22 February 2015 (UTC)Reply
Thanks Carp. That should do the trick. Who do they think they are "toying" with? A couple of "Noobs"???. Buster Seven Talk 15:37, 22 February 2015 (UTC)Reply

"They" are doing what they always do, look for articles that don't belong. it is nice when they take the trouble to research both the subject and the article authors, but if they are doing many of these a day,ime becomes an issue. here Violet left this morning, heading back to NM and she should be about at Winslow, Arizona (home of the "standing on a corner" statue) about now. Mostly if we give these folks what they are asking for they will go away. And yes, she needs a default sort because WE need to add some categories. Carptrash (talk) 15:42, 22 February 2015 (UTC)Reply

Violet is the Mrs, I assume. My Mrs of 30 years+ is Cathy. If you spell it with a "K" or even say it with a hard C sound, you will suffer unimaginable misfortune. The Library where I work has started a renovation project {one year, $4 mill). So the little book store in the basement that sells donations has to move out for the duration...and they are selling books "10 cents on the dollar". Got two good ones yesterday...African-American Artists and another that is still in the car (1999 Volvo 600, love it!) . I get that WE need to ad cats. In terms meant for a high-schooler , what does the default do? . Buster Seven Talk 15:57, 22 February 2015 (UTC)Reply

The default sort is what allows the persons name to show up on in the category, alphabetized by the last name. Carptrash (talk) 16:46, 22 February 2015 (UTC)Reply

In conclusion;

I just found this reminder that I made to myself in my sanbbox : Here is a neat trick to avoid a reprise: never put up a new article unless you have all of your independently confirmable sources in place. The problem is that these appear to be works in progress -- that will open you to tagging. I never put up a new article unless I have my references and links in place. Ecoleetage July 2008. Nice to hear from you, what's up? Carptrash (talk) 18:44, 4 March 2015 (UTC)Reply

Glad the pro-SEE-dure is going well and recovery continues. I was thumbing thru my new Directory of Native American Painters (DNAP) by Lester and found myself creating 3 new articles on the same day. I used an existing article (of course I forgot which one) as a template. I copied the whole article, created a sandbox, pasted and transposed and replaced info and data and prose, etc. Moments after they went "live" an editor showed up and tinkered with the refs which was fine....a learning moment for me. And I owe it all to a chance meeting with you. I used to get caught up in the daily drama which is easy to find for a wanderer like me. I still defend myself from criticism but it's different. I feel stronger and more confident as an active, working, participating member of WP. TRA!. Buster Seven Talk 12:55, 8 March 2015 (UTC)Reply
I am one of those folks who does not really believe in "a chance meeting's", believing instead that there are other forces at work - a sort of gravity that pulls people who need or should be together, together. In any case I am very happy if I was a catalyst in your development as an editor. My "new" eye still is not that focused but I can tell that colors are going to be much brighter. I am putzing away at User:Carptrash/Earl Palmer's hits, a process that I fine tuned on our murals, so that's a tip of the hat to you. Carptrash (talk) 17:02, 8 March 2015 (UTC)Reply

can you take a look at T. C. Cannon, an article I worked on this A.M. instead of sleeping-In. (:~) I'm not happy with the other references (called Frederick I think) and feel the "Notes" should be "references" and vice-a-versa and the Frederick ref should be displayed and used like the "Lester" ref. If you decide to make the changes I can "look over your shoulder" and learn how to make the changes. I have been conferring (slightly) with editor User talk:Unbuttered Parsnip about increasing my knowledge about refs but he uses a different way (Harvard) and I think I'm just getting confused which seems to be my normal state when dealing with making changes and adding new references to existing articles. Another editor (with limited experience) has now changed my reference to coincide with the previous references which I think were not properly in accordance with the MoS in the first place. I'd change it back but I don't want to edit war and I'm not actually sure which way is best. . Buster Seven Talk 22:54, 11 March 2015 (UTC)Reply

Mademoiselle O

edit

Hello, I'm from Russia, so please excuse my rusty English. I found, that Miss Hilda Ward helped to translate Nabokov's essay Mademoiselle O from French to English. It was one of Nabokov's first English publications. But it's not clear, is Hilda Ward from you article the same person who helped Nabokov? Nabokov's biographer Brian Boyd wrote that Hilda Ward, a translator, was introduced to Nabokov by Elena Mogilat, a teacher of Russian in Colombia. May be it could help to find the answer. If you would like to have fast answer please answer me Russian Wiki ru:Обсуждение участника:Hunu, I have no registration on enWiki. Your English is fine, I shudder to think what our discussion would be like if we did it in Russian. I like your clue best of all. What does he say in it? Carptrash (talk) 18:24, 29 March 2015 (UTC)Reply
I was wrong, Nabokov wrote nothing about Hilda Ward in 1951. But in 1966 he wrote "In America, whither I migrated on May 28, 1940, "Mademoisele O" was translated by late Hilda Ward into English, revised by me, and published by Edward Weeks in the Janaury , 1943, issue of The Atlantic Monthly..." 37.190.50.157 (talk) 07:48, 30 March 2015 (UTC)Reply

...which I shall upload upon my return home from my travels. I was in Williamston, North Carolina this morning, and managed to snag a photo of the mural in the post office there. FYI, I put in a reference at the beginning of the Michigan section "Michigan New Deal Art". WPAmurals.com. Retrieved April 1, 2015. that has a list of all (and links to most) of the Michigan PO murals. Putting in all of them and the individual references will take some time. 7&6=thirteen () 20:09, 1 April 2015 (UTC)Reply

It also has a link to all of the individual states, so this is a real gold mine. 7&6=thirteen () 20:12, 1 April 2015 (UTC)Reply
I went looking for this once:
Ann Arbor At the Sindecuse Museum of Dentistry, University of Michigan School of Dentistry, Ann Arbor – “Legend of Paul Bunyan” (original title) in the Children’s Waiting Room, by Francis E. Danovich (WPA) in 1939. (link contributed by Shannon O’Dell, Curator, Sindecuse Museum of Dentistry
And it seems to have been painted over. I did locate some other stuff and somewhere have a ca. 1940 article about WPA art in AA. I did a tour of East Lansing years ago and still have the flier for that. Somewhere. The Carpchives are somewhat in a state if disrepair these days. Carptrash (talk) 20:20, 1 April 2015 (UTC)Reply
I added good references to all the states. has complete listings for each state. good links to many of the individual art works are there, but those should be put in individually as to the work of art.Only place I missed was Virgin Islands, if they have anything. 7&6=thirteen () 01:02, 2 April 2015 (UTC)Reply

Category:Teachers who married their students

edit

+I'm really thinking that this is not a category that Wikipedia needs. It could be problematic when applied to living people. Skyerise (talk) 19:32, 1 April 2015 (UTC)Reply

As an art historian this is something that I have stumbled across many times over the years and finally decided to collect this information, so created this category. If it applies to living people, so be it. However I do appreciate that you contacted me rather than slash and burning it. Would you think that a List would be a better approach to collecting this information? Carptrash (talk) 19:37, 1 April 2015 (UTC)Reply
Yes, a list is less likely to be abused, since the lack of citations is obvious in a list article. But is this just for artists? I mean, would List of art teachers who married their students suffice? Not sure how big a general list might get... Skyerise (talk) 19:43, 1 April 2015 (UTC)Reply
I have not thought much beyond the art world, but I see no reason to limit a list as long as the "teacher" is someone notable, as defined by "having wikipedia article about them." Yes, the reference thing was concerning me a bit, esp. where this detail was not mentioned in our article. And you? Carptrash (talk) 19:58, 1 April 2015 (UTC)Reply
I've got no problem with List of teachers who married their students - as long as the criteria is they have to have a Wikipedia article and should have a citation for the fact in the list article. Can't trust things to stay in the article itself.... Skyerise (talk) 20:30, 1 April 2015 (UTC)Reply

Speaking of which...I picked up a couple of books on the subject of art in the southern United States, including a nice little volume on women artists. I expect to make some good headway using those, and I'll let you know what I'm working on when I start it up. Speaking of which...do you have any interest in colonial artists at all? --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 01:34, 9 April 2015 (UTC)Reply

I know very little about colonial artists, though might have some info on some if I have a name to go by. One theory of American art (which I sort of buy into, but am always willing to change) is that there was not such thing as colonial art if you leave out folk art. I have some stuff on early tombstones but . . . ... tell me more, tell me more. I am interested in women artists and recently picked up a (used) Women artists of the West, so let's do it. 04:42, 9 April 2015 (UTC)Carptrash (talk)

Right - I'm home now. Let me get sorted and see what I can start doing, hopefully in the next day or so.
Regarding colonial artists, I've been doing some work in that arena of late - have a look at John Mare (painter), for instance. I take your point, about folk art, but I don't entirely agree with it; there was some work of very high quality being done in a couple of the urban centers, especially Boston, for at least a couple of decades before the Revolution. I have an excellent resource which I am using to close some of the gap I see around here. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 00:25, 10 April 2015 (UTC)Reply

Eight Southern Women

edit

OK, I've liberated the book from my packing, though I won't have time to delve into it in any detail in the next few days. It's the catalog of an exhibit titled Eight Southern Women which was shown at the Greenville County Museum of Art sometime in the 1980s. If you'd like to do some research, here are the artists profiled:

I see we already have articles on four...perhaps I can add some stuff to those when I have time.

I'm also looking at a couple of other books I bought, mainly on Southern art...there should be some nice goodies there. (I can already see myself expanding my old article on William D. Washington, for instance.) --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 01:25, 10 April 2015 (UTC)Reply

Yeesh, $63? I bought my copy in the museum store for ten bucks - primarily as a Wiki source. (I must confess that in perusing it I didn't find much that I cared for, though there are a couple of pieces I wouldn't mind hanging on my walls.) If you're interested you can try writing them and see if they'll sell you one by mail - their shop prices were quite reasonable. (I bought another book, also as a source, titled Impressionism and the South - two dollars. Also a third catalog, which I intend to use for articles but which is also a memento of a lovely little exhibit I saw there, for ten bucks again.)
Greenville is an interesting museum - it specializes in art of the South, about which I don't know very much. There was an exhibit of paintings from the Johnson Collection (http://thejohnsoncollection.org/) on display, and another of work by a fellow named Sidney Dickinson. No article (yet - ha), and I'd never heard of him before, but his works are most fascinating. And quite disturbing, some of them. If you ever go to the Carolinas, it's well worth a visit. I'd love to get them involved in an edit-a-thon based on their collection.
Actually, Greenville is worth it for the museum and gallery at Bob Jones University, too, which has a fine collection of Old Master religious works. There's also the Columbia Museum of Art in Columbia, SC, and the North Carolina Museum of Art in Raleigh - we hit all four on that trip I just came back from. I'm told there's also an excellent collection of Southern art at the Morris Museum in Augusta, GA, which I'm going to put on my list for a future visit. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 02:35, 13 April 2015 (UTC)\Reply

Edit-a-thon at U of C

edit

Yesterday I attended above at the University of Chicago Regenstein Library with a few other editors. The Special Collection section was open for our use and the staff had selected some Women that were historic to U of C for editor developing. I got lucky with Maude Hutchins. Her article was pretty much a stub, only mentioning her later years as an author. But her early life, as an artist, was completely missing. Right away I found a great article from 1928, The Chicago Sunday Tribune, from which I gathered loads of wonderful info. It was a treat to handle the actual document, in this case a weathered copy of the article and other notices and ads for shows, and little blurbs from the Chicago Maroon, the school paper. Not all of it was usable but it was a gas to read, and, I say this with a straight face, fondle. Also, I JethroBT pointed out the "Named references clipboard" which I never knew about. It was like hearing the Beetles for the first time. Hope all is well. The ANI case I was focussed on is over and we await the ARBCom proposals. TRA!. Sounds like a good time. You are serious looking - at least compared to the 20 year olds. Well a couple of years editing wikipedia will add a couple of decades to their looks. I am fine, still not quite up to full scale editing, but I just picked up "The Women Artist in the American West
1860-1960" and hope to get a few stubs from that. Carptrash (talk) 22:09, 17 April 2015 (UTC)Reply

In last couple of days, at english language wikisource project, I have worked quite a bit on (Indian) Copyright Act, 1957 to update the same to include changes of copyright amendment act 2012. Please note on most of internet as of now Copyright Act, 1957 may not be uptodate with 2012 amendments, and en wikisource would be one of those few (and also free) places where people can refer the updated document, Provided that it is peer reviewed for accuracy.

I am seeking your kind help in peer review and improvement of this document at en wikisource.

I am making this request believing you have made some edits previously to (Indian) Copyright Act, 1957 this article at en wikisource.

Thanks and warm regards

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that you've added some links pointing to disambiguation pages. Dear Sir, . Yes I am the family archivist, mostly because no one else is very interested in the "dead people" in my family. Because of that disinterest, I secured a pretty good library of papers relating to many of the successful members of the family. . What is it you would like to discuss? As it turns out I will be traveling through New Mexico mid May 2015. Perhaps we might exchange information as to where it is you are verses where it is I will be traveling. . Couple more for you

Created Catharine Carter Critcher today - funny thing, she's buried not too far from where I live now. (I ought to go down to Ivy Hill and do some grave photography now the weather's turning.) Also James Hamilton Shegogue. Speaking of which latter, here's a source that might be of interest to you: Art and Artists in Connecticut. Anyhow, on to more artistry... --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 23:39, 25 April 2015 (UTC)Reply

After more time than I care to admit, at last I've expanded Kate Freeman Clark as well. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 00:53, 26 April 2015 (UTC)Reply
Alice Ravenel Huger Smith is also done, if you'd care to have a look. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 16:34, 26 April 2015 (UTC)Reply

Women of the Hudson River School

Had you seen this article? I just discovered it when looking at the article for Mary Blood Mellen. Possible fodder for some articles there?

In a semi-related story, I've gone and bought myself a catalog of the collections of the National Academy of Design. Judging by what I've been able to preview on Google Books that's going to be a great source for some new articles when it comes... --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 17:45, 29 April 2015 (UTC)Reply

More fodder indeed. I am, unfortunately, over knee deep in fodder already and my wikitempo is way down,
so any more
and I might drown.

Sad to hear your tempo's down
but I understand (with an inward frown)
Back in gear I soon will click
if only I can find the trick
Some good hard work would get me high
perhaps I'll give Female Mural Artists a try!!!

I feel, sometimes, like Alice's rabbit
Getting further and further behind;
Though editing well is a habit
Not un-easy to pick up, I find,
I've a problem that's more elemental,
For no matter how much I may write,
How well-crafted my text, how essential
To draft articles, night after night,
O my task becomes more Sisyphean
As the world's store of knowledge yet grows,
And my labors turn more Herculean
As I hammer away at my prose.
Though my work it gets ever more tricky,
To my chores I must fly, it is true,
For, though much I may yet AutoWiki,
There is always, ah! much more to do!

There's an old piano
And they play it hot behind the green door;
Don't know what they're doing
But they laugh a lot behind the green door.
Wish they'd let me in
So I could find out what's behind the green door.

Peer review and document improvement request

edit

This is a Peer review request to seek broader input to improve page: meta:Help:Form I & Affidavit (Customised for relinquishment of copyright as per 'free cultural work' definition) an option available under (Indian) Copyright act 1957 rules. Rgds. Mahitgar (talk) 02:10, 2 June 2015 (UTC)Reply

I have never done peer reviews and am not inclined to start now. Carptrash (talk) 15:09, 6 June 2015 (UTC)Reply
