Good to see you create lots of new pages on Hindu mythology. A few words of advice regarding convention. When one creates a new page which is relatively of a very short length, one should give a stub notice which is available somewhere on the site. Also, the first word in the page is also the name of the page itself, and is in Bold KRS 09:30, 20 Nov 2003 (UTC)

+ 1 more tip - You just have to type 4 tildes to automatically sign with date and 3 tildes for just name alone (tilde is the key before 1 in the keyboard:-)KRS 09:40, 20 Nov 2003 (UTC)

Am really flattered that you consider my contributions worthy enough to merit an adminship! Thanks a lot. However, I need to think about it. Reasons are

• I haven't done enough work to merit an adminship.
• I have been trying to get deaddicted and spend more time on practically productive work:-)
• I contribute to Wikipedia because I like the concept, like writing, like creating order/meaning and uncovering truth through writing. This I can do even if I am a regular contributor.
• I am not too altruistic as to look at other people's contributions unless it directly infringes on my zone of interests, leave alone settle disputes:-)
• In my initial stages here, in a couple of occasions (Hinduism and Creationism) when discussions got heated up, I tended to get too involved. Though I felt that my contributions were very valuable and the articles became so much the better for them, I felt that it took too much out of me.Since then I have become more detached. As an adminship might entail getting involved in disputes, I am not sure whether I can do justice to it.

Having said all that, I will think about it if more people feel the same way as you do. However, I am sure that the usual gang of admins who vote on this will 'profile' me well and come to the same conclusions as me:-) BTW, I am a 'she'. KRS 09:25, 5 Feb 2004 (UTC)

Its natural to assume what you did considering the fact that only once have I mentioned my gender(in a similar context:-)); didn't think it was relevant. On crime fiction

Hi,

Thanks for informing me of the changes in the crime fiction article. I'm perfectly aware that this is Wikipedia territory, so of course you're welcome to make any changes you consider an improvement. On the other hand, please don't expect me to approve of them: If I had intended the text differently, I would have written it differently.

I've seen it before: people either merging articles or splitting them up (for example the article I started a long time ago at Millennialism), seemingly at random. You know what, until you mentioned it I didn't even know that there was a "Cleanup" department (your link is not very helpful). I understand there was one request (just one?!) that the article be split up -- and that is all it needs for a willing executioner to lend a helping hand?

You summed up the very first change you made like this: "Why use ten words when one suffices?" Well, I don't think one -- literature -- suffices. Many authors are reluctant to call their own novels and stories crime fiction, but it is the publishers, booksellers etc. who label them as such.

I do hope that there won't be some fool who deletes the older versions of the crime fiction article or who demands their deletion.

Hinduism

Hi,

If/when you have the time and the inclination, could you please look into Hinduism. User Sam Spade seems to consider it right to refer to Hinduism as an ethnicity and does not seem to see reason. Currently I am hard pressed for time and have connectivity problems also, but I would hate to see something incorrect in this page when so many Indians/ Hindus are Wikipedians. Been having connectivity problems, so I have kind of lost touch with the pace of life in Wikipedia and in Hinduism. The page seems to be totally a different one now. I still don't agree with the ethnicity reference. However, citations need to be given in case the matter has to be discussed and I don't have the time for it. Also I feel that a detailed writeup on Hindoo and all the colonial baggage is not necessary at the beginning of the page. I too was unhappy with the way the talk page became a platform for discussions on the caste of Wikipedians. I have seen some wikipedians refer to this kind of debates as ad hominem attacks:-) KRS 14:01, 31 Mar 2004 (UTC)

So that you know, I am an american without a Hindu background culturally, and have gravitated towards Sanatana Dharma. I'm not sure if it is appropriate to call myself Hindu due to cultural and ethnic differences, but I have read the bhagavad-gita and find it entirely agreeable. Anyways I hope you understand that my experience and information on the topic is thus limited in comparison to native Hindus, altho my interest and studiousness on the subject is quite high. If you find me making edits on the subject you find to be innaccurate, or lacking in some level of comprehension on my part, please feel free to let me know. Some seem to feel I ment to press an agressive agenda in my edits on Hinduism, but quite the opposite my goal is to learn and to share what I know, as well as to make the article as informative and accurate as it might possibly be :). I'm sorry it degenerated, but I will hold that I did not bring the level of conversation down to ad hominems. You'll not that I've put all my outrageous or stupid comments on my user page, for all to see, and none of them include anything remotely of the sort of vitiated dialogue to which you're referring. If I have any fault, it's being verbose. But I do not believe that presenting evidence in an objective fashion and not responding in kind to someone who accused me of being in a pro-Pakistani time warp puts me on the same level as the other interlocutors in this issue. Chancemill, I appreciate your concern on this issue. Clearly my obnoxious detractor believes in presenting vague facts and raking up issues that are relegated to history. A person having an intricate vocablulary may intimidate others, but not me. He comments on his superior intelligence (indirectly). He also has a tendancy to be cynical about other people's views, not necessarily mine. His obscure paradigms are a level of his frustrations. As for as homniem remarks, he is no angel in this regard, having personally mentioned it on his page. In an attempt to show him the lit path, he jumps to the depths of darkness. Oil for food

Someone supporting your adminship nomination wrote you had special skills in mediation, and your user page seems to indicate that you do not have a special bias in the topic of oil for food, so I thought you might be willing to help us? There are serious problems, mainly because two users have extreme disagreements and no one else intervened. Bcorr now suggested a peace-plan, would you please take a loot at it?

I saw on your page that you live in India and that you are into Software Consulting. Would you be interested in a vocabulary project I am starting with some people from here and wikibooks? We definitely need someone who could improve on the software, and including one of the languages that are most often spoken in the world and one with such a rapidly growing importance would be great. Thank you for your fast reply. My project is explained on my user page. I have written a program for learning vocabulary. It is based on the belief that it is best to learn foreign words by learning typical sentences. The program can also be used for learning other stuff that works with the question/answer scheme, e.g. the theory for the driving licence or anatomy. Unfortunately I wrote it in qbasic, which can be downloaded here. It also uses images and sound files for alternation and in order to work on the pronunciation. I currently have files in English, French (with sound), and Spanish. Catalan and Portuguese are in the planning. Corrections or additions are very welcome. The easiest thing to start with for improvements would be adding new vocabulary, sound files or images. A guide to the program will follow soon, although I think it is rather self-explanatory. In the long run the program should be rewritten in a better language like Visual Basic, C, Java or whatever experts think would work best. Afterwards it should be possible to switch languages within the program. Up to now there is a different version of the program for each language. Another serious shortcoming is that only a limited number of words can be included in a data file. Get-back-world-respect 12:42, 30 Apr 2004 (UTC)

Congratulations to your adminship! Thank you for replying and even taking the time to take a look at Oil for food. Unfortunately only one other user participated in the project, and exactly the one who had caused the whole problem, cf. Wikipedia:Requests for comment/TDC. For the vocabulary program, I have already written it, it can be downloaded from my homepage. It uses whole sentences, definitions, images, and sound to learn vocabulary. It can be used for anything that can be learned with the question/answer scheme, such as theory for the dirver's license or anatomy. But it is certainly not programmed in a good language, and it would be nice if it were easier to include new vocabulary/images, etc. Another user suggested to include the list of vocabulary in wikibooks, which I think is a great idea, and I will start with it as soon as I can and made up my mind how to do it best. India, downsizing

I suggest we adhere to Wikipedia's page size recommendations (under 32K). I'm not pro culling, but I think articles under headings on the main page should be brief. If anyone needs further info, he can read "see more" articles. I too agree that more content addition is needed, but all can't be added to the main page, links are our best bet to such information addition. There's no harm if the article starts off as a stub. In my opinion a paragraph under a sub-heading should suffice, along with a link to detailed information. Regards Nichalp 19:33, May 8, 2004 (UTC)

List of English words of Tamil origin

Is "rice" really derived from "arisi"? Webster's and American Heritage seem to cite Sanskrit and Persian words as the origin (http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=rice), but they could be wrong, of course. Thanks. Ambarish | Talk 20:27, 20 May 2004 (UTC)
