The easiest way to get the numbers changed is to file a request at bugzilla: so that a developer can do it. If you mention that these are already used on the Arabic Wikipedia, it should be fairly simple for someone to apply that to the other Arabic projects. Angela. 11:40, September 12, 2005 (UTC)

Rock bands index a - t
editWould you mind clumping that together into List of Rock Bands?, and wikifying it using [[TEXT HERE]]. Thanks. εγκυκλοπαίδεια* (talk) 17:52, 18 December 2005 (UTC)
For you outstanding work, I want to reward you this (the Exceptional Newcomer Award):
It must have taken a long time to get all that info, and I am thinking now that they can be separate articles, but need to be Wikified and put in a category. I'll help! εγκυκλοπαίδεια* (talk) 17:59, 18 December 2005 (UTC)

editHi Encyclopedist
I,m so happy that you find one of my first contributions here very good , actually i have joined wikipedia six monthes ago but i was busy in activating the Arabic Wikipedia and finishing the Setting up period , it should approach 10000 articles in this month , and i will happily contribute more in English Wikipedia . about the List it is ok to transfer it to the new titel and i will do my best in wikifying it . thanks for ur support and i,m happy to make conversation with old wikipedian like u ..keep in touch --Unfinishedchaos 18:12, 19 December 2005 (UTC)
- You did very, very well on the List of Rock Band articles, and I was just worried that the list wasn't wikified. (you shouldn't have them in all caps, either :)). I tried to help, but I was confused and that was a lot of work! See you soon, I am glad that we were able to get in touch with one another. εγκυκλοπαίδεια* 18:15, 19 December 2005 (UTC)
List of Rock Bands
editI'm sorry to have to clamp down on you here, but we really do not need a List of Rock Bands in Wikipedia. That is what is for, and artificial pages such as this cannot do it better than the inbuilt category system. Thanks though for trying to improve Wikipedia, and I encourage you to expand on or create the individual articles of Rock Bands. Thanks, and Welcome to Wikipedia. editThe problem might be that ar:MediaWiki:Ipboptions has been wrongly translated. See fr:MediaWiki:Ipboptions for an example of how it should be. The Arabic version contains line breaks. Please see if removing those fixes the problem. Angela. 11:30, 24 December 2005 (UTC)

Re:Muslims' Viewpoint
editTo all those reading: comments may be offensive to some. Please don't say I didn't warn you.
Many Muslims felt offended after the puplication of Muhammad cartoons. This anger has been expressed as public protests in Arabic and Islamic countries. Muslims claim that this anger isn't directed against freedom of speech - as the western media represent the issue - but rather is against an insult to all Muslims, since the cartoons represent their Prophet as terrorist and criminal. According to Muslim opinion, the drawing of Prophet Muhammad is not acceptable (actually, pictures of all prophets including Jesus and Moses are forbidden in Islam). Additionally they object the way in which Prophet Muhammad has been represented as a terrorist, which means in their opinion that all Muslims are terrorists. For Muslims a message of Hate is sent by those cartoons, and they frankly express the modern Islamophobia spreading in the western world, as President Clinton said .
Many Muslims think that the Jyllands Posten should be punished by the Danish Government, and make comparisons to the charges that have been made against writers descriped as anti-semitic in Europe.
Most European and American media supports the newspaper and considers the issue to be one of Freedom of Speech, which is one of the most important traditions in the Western, secular world. For them Muhammad should dealt with as any other religious figure - even in satirical cartoons, just like Jesus and Buddha. They believe that Muslims have no right to enforce censorship of the media.
For some Muslims, the publication of these pictures is seen as racist. For Many muslims there is no problem with criticism of Islamic belief, rules or behaviour, and there is no prolem either with making fun of religious people, but presenting the prophet Muhammed - who is an ideal for all Muslims - as a terrorist, suggests that all Muslims are fundamentalists and extremeists. They believe that this is a message of hate and intolerance and therefore that goverments shouldn't accepted such behaviour from the media .
The section is always removed saying it not sourced pov section .. can u help me clarify where is the pov while the whole article support the Danish journal . All the Best --Unfinishedchaos 18:31, 2 February 2006 (UTC)
- All I can say is that I understand the "Freedom of Speech." - well, no I don't. It is pure blasphemy. I also see NO difference in poking fun at Islam than discrimination towards Blacks, Jews and Gays, and even women. A lot of people are taking the matter lightly and saying "big deal!" but they do not take into consideration that such political menacing was one of the first steps to commence the Holocaust against the Jews. I feel it is a shame that in the modern world we are still provoked by petty differences, and feel that they are a reason to mock another religion. Another problem is that the majority of people only assert myths about Islam, but never bothered to pick up a Koran (like I did). I say before trying to destroy someone's belief, I think we should all learn more about them. This has taken a further step than the freedom of speech, this is pure blasphemy. I could only imagine the outrage if on the Passion of the Christ movie poster, someone added devil horns to Jesus...or, should I say, have a BLACK JESUS portrayed in the movie. Is it so strange that we live in such an ignorant world? And protest would probably targeted as terrorist plots.
- Question: What made you ask me in the first place? I want you to know that I do feel that the demeaning pictures are a form of blasphemy - and like I said, I don't see the difference between that and adding Devil horns to a Jesus image. I simply don't. I also see this as a DIRECT correllary to the "black face" minstrel shows were black people were featured eating watermelon with tire thick lips, oil black skin and knot like hair...and of course, the obese black woman so obedient and so happy in her subservient position. What the hell? Why do we do this, why can't we actually see the world in someone elses eye? But, I would rather not discuss this further, as I don't think Wikipedia is the place for this. E-mail me at djuanbracey@yahoo.com if you are more interested, but my political views are too left, and I'd hate to have the FBI bugging my computer :-) And by the way, I think Bush is a terrorist. Yes, I said it. εγκυκλοπαίδεια* 20:52, 2 February 2006 (UTC)
- Hi Unfinished...it's better, but the problem is that there are still loads of passive verbs and unattributed comments that make the thing feel like an essay. Right at the beginning I read: "The Muslim reaction was misunderstood as being directed against freedom of speech, when it was about the insult felt by most Muslims." Misunderstood by who? Don't just say "western media", you need to give examples, you can't make sweeping statements like this in English Wikipedia. And you can't just assert that in fact the reaction was not against freedom of speech; these are millions of people having a reaction, you are not in a position to say what it "was about". If you were writing an editorial in a newspaper you could say this, but not in an encyclopedia which cannot offer original analysis. We are a secondary source. Even if you find a primary source that argues this, you can't say, "this is the reality, as so-and-so says. You have to say that "so-and-so argues that...". In general, passive verbs are a way of avoiding attribution and are a one-way ticket to unencyclopedic writing. Still, as I say, it's definitely better. Babajobu 21:29, 3 February 2006 (UTC)

Muslim opinion
editHi, Unfinished, yes, the talk page gets tiresome sometimes! Ah well, what can one do. I made some edits to your section in the article, but I don't see the link you provided on my talkpage...where should I go? Babajobu 23:44, 3 February 2006 (UTC)
- No, on my talk page you said "Please have a look at this:", but there was no link to look at. Babajobu 23:51, 3 February 2006 (UTC)
- I disagree with the sentiment expressed in the talk page, because racist and antisemitic cartoons are perfectly legal in western countries, but I think the cartoon does a great job of expressing how many Muslims seem to feel about the issue. Yes, very good job in finding that cartoon! I think the section is really pretty good now, well done! Babajobu 00:01, 4 February 2006 (UTC)
- Ah yes, I totally agree with you. Whether I personally agree with the cartoon is totally irrelevant...what matters is that we accurately describe the sentiment that exists in the Muslim world, and the cartoon does a good job of that. So it absolutely belongs in the article, in fact it's an excellent addition! Babajobu 00:10, 4 February 2006 (UTC)

Hate speech
editThank you for taking the time to talking to me about it, Chaos. I am glad that we both thing that there should not be any censorship on thought and ideas. This makes it easier to think and to talk. So you say the pictures are "Hate speech", eh? Does this mean that you think that showing the pictures would make people go out and kill muslims? DanielDemaret 15:38, 24 February 2006 (UTC)
- No need to answer the above question if you dont want. Inciting to hate is enough to make something hate speech, so I was over-doing it there.
- There is one thing I would like to ask you that is more important to me. Flemming Rose intent was to attack people who issue death threats, not to attack muslims. This is obvious if you read the danish text. Striver has suggested that his intent does not matter. To me, and definitely to the law in Sweden and in Denmark about hate speech, it is the only thing that matters. What is your opinion on this?DanielDemaret 17:15, 24 February 2006 (UTC)
- Draw Jesus as satan? Go ahead, if you like. I am a christian, and if could draw I would draw it for you. None of the christians in my congration would be offended in the least. To them, insults can only offend if there is an intelligent person intently making a personal and degrading remark. Jesus as Satan is not personal. As for the "intelligent person intent", it would depend on why you drew it. Such a picture in itself would be quite meaningless, and not insulting to anyone (perhaps insulting to satan, if he is not a christian? ) DanielDemaret 18:23, 24 February 2006 (UTC)
We need you
editBesides anything else I write, I want you to know that the article really needs insightful comments from people like you, since the rest of us are very ignorant of Muslims. I thought I understood something since I have many muslim friends, I had read an english translation of the Quran, some books about the history of muslim countries, read thru translations of the Hadith, but this event has shown me that I understand very little at all, and that those texts seem to have nothing important to say about Muslims. About what you wrote on my talk page
edit- Well written.DanielDemaret 18:55, 24 February 2006 (UTC)
Please regard all that I say as Questions
edit(This title above is a quote by Niels Bohr, btw).
Perhaps the core difference lies in expectations. I do not think you can insult me, since I have faith that even if you tried to insult me, you would only do it to prove something. I do not think I can insult you intentionally because I see no reason for doing so.
Flemming does not believe he was insulting muslims, since he did not intend to.
But perhaps Muslims see an insult there for others reasons. After all, as soon as it was pointed out to him that the cartoon could be interpreted in an offensive manner he should have apologized immediately and publicly, not 4 months later. The same goes for the Prime Minister, and he should invited the National Representatives to some marvellous danish cooking. Sometimes I think that it was this neglect, coupled with modern Danish Xenophobia (not Islamophobia) which developed into the real perceived insult to the muslims living in Denmark.
Another problem might lie in good faith. If Flemming could not belive that Muslims would be offended, and/or Muslims could not believe that Flemming could not have seen the disrespect to Mohammed, then there would a deadly stalemate which could escalate into mistrust and real lies over into violence. DanielDemaret 19:37, 24 February 2006 (UTC)
- The speculation above has only to do with the reaction of Muslims living in Denmark, not with the international reaction.DanielDemaret 19:41, 24 February 2006 (UTC)
I happened to see that your user page listed Philosophy of modern physics, which is empty as a topic you were interested in. I think that you will probably find what you are looking for if you first look at Philosophy of physics, or perhaps in one of the links therein. DanielDemaret 12:21, 25 February 2006 (UTC)
Preliminary Questions to your answer
editI followed your clear argument, but I have a few questions.
- Question 1: Which question did your answer refer to?
- Question 2: Your argument seems to be against US imperialism. Danish papaers have made many cartoons with your arguments against the US. You are using Danish arguments here. You sound just like a Dane here. I do not see how your argument is in any way against Denmark. You seem very pro-Denmark here. Are you?
Clarification on Denmark
edit- Most Western European countries were and still are dead against the US invasion of Iraqi.
- Most Western European countries are dead against censorship that makes US papers and TV a laughing stock abroad.
- Denmark attacks censorship in US media
- Denmark attacks censorship in the arab world
- Denmark attacks censorship imposed on Denmark by criminal muslims (a death threat is a crime in Denmark)
- Denmark attacks the US if any US agency tries to impose censorship in Denmark.
The only difference between the way Denmark has treated the US and the way Denmark has treated the muslim world is that the US has failed to impose censorship in Denmark since the US has not used any criminal means like death threats to any Danish citizen.DanielDemaret 14:22, 25 February 2006 (UTC)
Direct comments on your answer
editYes, I agree. And so would most here in Scandinavia. We do not want imperialism coming from anywhere, and we do not want it happening to anyone else. I was just a bit taken aback when you used Scandinavian arguments against imperialism. DanielDemaret 14:38, 25 February 2006 (UTC)

There is a featured article in Arabic which we would like to know how it could be used the English one which is of course dominated by people who have either been there as soldiers or have their knowledge from western media. Someone also asked if the section about "related propaganda and phrases" could be amplified with information about the Iraqi side. Resid Gulerdem 00:20, 12 March 2006 (UTC)
Hi,
We started a proposal Wikipedia:Wikiethics to state the existing policies coherently and make suggestions on improving the editorial standards in Wiki. I thought you might be interested in contributing to that proposal.
Unfortunately, a pro-porn and pro-offense lobby is trying to make this proposal a failure. They unilaterally started an approval poll although almost no one including me believe that it is time for a vote, simply because the policy is not ready. It is not even written completely.
Editors who thinks that the policy needs to be improved rather than killed by an unfair poll at the beginning of the proposal, started another poll ('Do we really need a poll at this stage?') at the same time. The poll is vandalized for a while but it is stable now. A NO vote on this ('Do we really need a poll now?') poll will strengthen the position of the editors who are willing to improve the ethics policy further.
If you have concerns about the ethics and editorial standards in Wiki, please visit the page Wikipedia:Wikiethics with your suggestions on the policy. We have two subpages: Arguments and Sections. You might want to consider reviewing these pages as well...
Thanks in advance. Resid Gulerdem 21:22, 22 March 2006 (UTC)

editHello, I don't know who I should speak to about this important matter. The Golan article has been taking over by Israelis and they have removed everything mentioning an occupation and changed it to "disputed" They have also removed the "the neutrality of this article is disputed" that was on top of the article while it is written in a completely pro-Israeli way. Please do something about this! —Preceding unsigned comment added by SwedishArab (talk • contribs) 19:55, 1 January 2009 (UTC)

Isaac Newton
editHello, I am a new editor here at Wikipedia and I am interested in elevating Isaac Newton to FA status. But since I am new, I have been advised to seek the help of other more experienced editors before submitting it for FA. I was wondering if you can help me with the article, or to seek out other editors who can do that? The article is very nearly FA status; and only needs someone experienced to handle all the trivial details that need to be ironed out. TheOriginalSoni (talk) 07:40, 12 November 2012 (UTC)

The Wikipedia Library now offering accounts from Cochrane Collaboration (sign up!)
edit
Cochrane Collaboration is an independent medical nonprofit organization consisting of over 28,000 volunteers in more than 100 countries. The collaboration was formed to organize medical scholarship in a systematic way in the interests of evidence-based research: the group conducts systematic reviews of randomized controlled trials of health-care interventions, which it then publishes in the Cochrane Library.
Cochrane has generously agreed to give free, full-access accounts to 100 medical editors. Individual access would otherwise cost between $300 and $800 per account. Thank you Cochrane!
If you are stil active as a medical editor, come and sign up :)

editQu'est-ce qui s'est passé?
Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page.
