The Tea Leaf - Issue Six

Hi! Welcome to the sixth edition of The Tea Leaf, the official newsletter of the Teahouse!

  • Teahouse serves over 700 new editors in six months on Wikipedia! Since February 27, 741 new editors have participated at the Teahouse. The Q&A board and the guest intro pages are more active than ever.

A lovely little teahouse nestled in Germany from Wiki Loves Monuments
  • Automatic invites are doing the trick: 50% more new editors visiting each week. Ever since HostBot's automated invite trial phase began we've seen a boost in new editor participation. Automating a baseline set of invitations also allows Teahouse hosts to focus on serving hot cups of help to guests, instead of spending countless hours inviting.
  • Guests to the Teahouse continue to edit more & interact more with other community members than non-Teahouse guests according to six month metrics. Teahouse guests make more than twice the article edits and edit more talk pages than other new editors.
  • New host process implemented which encourages anyone to get started as a Teahouse host in a few easy steps. Stop by the hosts page and become a Teahouse host today!
  • Host lounge renovations nearing completion. Working closely with Teahouse hosts, we've made some major renovations to the Teahouse Host Lounge - the main hangout and resource space for hosts. Learn more about the improvements here.

As always, thanks for supporting the Teahouse project! Stop by and visit us today!

OWN?

I do not own WikiProject Woking it is more like YOU do as you do not stop until you get your own way. You edits have been reverted by several editors now, please can you stop reverting.

Many thanks-Willrocks10 (talk) 11:11, 8 September 2012 (UTC)

Did you read the advice that User:Glanis gave you at User talk:Pbl1998#Problem!? If you did maybe you need to read it again.--Charles (talk) 14:11, 8 September 2012 (UTC)

Adopt-a-user

Hi Charlesdrakew. I'm leaving you this message because you have previously been involved as an adopter with Wikipedia's Adopt-a-user program. A clean-up of this program is currently underway, and as part of the process I am trying to find out who is and isn't still interested in remaining an adopter.

If you would prefer not to be part of the adoption program anymore, you need do nothing; when the overhaul of the project is completed your name will be removed from the list of active adopters. However, if you have current adoptees, an active adoption school or an interest in adopting in the near future, then please let us know by signing here.

If you want to remain in the project and can currently take on more adoptees, there is a serious backlog at Category:Wikipedians seeking to be adopted in Adopt-a-user; it would be enormously helpful if you could take on one or two of the users there. Please do keep an eye on the project for upcoming changes, we could use your opinions and your help! Yunshui  08:58, 19 September 2012 (UTC)

Hi Charlesdrakew/Archives/2012. Thanks for agreeing to stay on at Adopt-a-user. I've recently updated the list of adopters and I have included you, per your original comments on that page and your comments at User:Yunshui/Overhaul/Adopters staying on. You can see your new profile at the list of adopters. Why not update your profile with an image and maybe have another look at your description? You can also include a list of any adoptees you currently have. If you are also willing to mentor problematic users, possibly as part of a conditional unblock, please include "mentorship=yes" in your profile. Thanks again for all your help. New page submission

Hi Charles, I have added some early history for Brown as you suggest. And I would like to proceed with your suggestion to submit it - but I can't seem to find the

"If you are writing an article and are ready to request its creation click here." button.

can you give me a few more clues as to where I might find it.

thanks

CathyL007 (talk) 05:57, 28 September 2012 (UTC)

Hi Cathy
You can submit your article just by adding {{subst:submit}} to the top of the page. It will take a while for it to be reviewed.--Charles (talk) 07:59, 28 September 2012 (UTC)

Hi Charles,

I have added the {{subst:submit}} into my page - can you check it is in the correct place - is there anything else I need to do. I do appreciate the help with this it's quite different to what I am used to doing. I have just finished a website - first one with adobe Muse - maybe you would like to take a look www.justcarsautomotive.com at what else I get up to. thanks

CathyL007 (talk) 10:40, 28 September 2012 (UTC)

I removed the nowiki tags which were only intended to stop my talk page being submitted. They stop the wiki code from being implemented. I cannot find that web address.--Charles (talk) 13:00, 28 September 2012 (UTC)

help!

Hi, you recently removed my contribution on how to see the British Museum citing that the BM page is not a guide. Many people who see the wiki article are planning to visit the Museum so it is a useful bit of information for them... and i would like to post it somewhere.. please help — Preceding unsigned comment added by Polojam77 (talkcontribs) 11:21, 10 October 2012 (UTC)

Hello Polojam. As you are new around here you will not know that being "useful" is not enough reason to include external links in this encyclopedia. You may find it helpful to read What Wikipedia is not and WP:USEFUL. As there is no indication of who publishes the linked site I assume it is self-published which also makes it ineligible under WP:External links.--Charles (talk) 13:32, 10 October 2012 (UTC)

Post Deletion

Hi there

I was just curious as to why you deleted my factual edit of the Dorking Wikipedia page. My post was based wholly in fact as if you look into the Dorking record books you will find that there was in fact a homosexual man by the name of Olive Jones living in Dorking during early establishment. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.7.204.167 (talk) 21:52, 16 October 2012 (UTC)

Well for a start you deleted most of the "about" template at the top of the page. Then you added unsourced and trivial material lacking any coherent grammar, capitalisation or puntuation. It is not my job to look into the Dorking records but it is your responsibility to provide reliable sources for any fact you add to Wikipedia. Other than that it is hard to see how the presence of a homosexual man would be notable.--Charles (talk) 22:08, 16 October 2012 (UTC)

Hey

If you check out my photo Uploads on commons you'll find I'm in your backyard (not literally, at least I hope not) probably won't get a chance to meet in real life before I leave on Friday but thought it would be polite to let you know. Ironically the first thing related to my editing on Wikipedia I saw in Sussex wasn't Butlins but was the Coastliner 700 and seeing it has done little to convince me of it's notability. Perhaps considering a second AfD when I get back. :-) Stuart.Jamieson (talk) 22:27, 16 October 2012 (UTC)

Hi Stuart. i don't want to reveal too much about my back yard on here but I have e-mailed you. Good old Butlins. We took the children there some years ago to their Tropical Water World or some such name. The water temperature turned out to be rather subtropical though. As for those boxes on wheels with seats and an engine it astonishes me how involved some people get in them. Lengths listed to the nearest cm etc. Not that I have anything against them as public transport. Great if you live in an urban area where there is a frequent service.--Charles (talk) 08:51, 17 October 2012 (UTC)

Greetings From Costa Rica Charles

I'm new on this, so I'm still learning. Any reference guide that you recommend or any tips to write articles and change colours on the header on my page, easy exercises so I can become a better Wikipedian...???

Thanks in advance. — Preceding unsigned comment added by C.M.Rangel (talkcontribs) 22:07, 25 October 2012 (UTC)

Pease Pottage

Hi,

I was browsing the Pease Pottage page entry and made some changes to the links, deleting one that was invalid, one that was irrelevant, re-ordering them and adding a couple more interesting links. You have deleted them all, including most of those that were there before my amendments, with the comment "rv self-published sites per WP:EL". Can you explain what this means? As it happens, the one link that remains, to the Pease Pottage page on the Mid Sussex District Council website, is hopelessly out-of-date!

(I neglected to log in when making the changes earlier) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Pottager (talkcontribs) 18:55, 1 November 2012 (UTC)

Hi Pottager. Yes I deleted the links because they did not meet Wikipedia's strict criteria for external links which you can read about here. Specifically they were self-published sites without cited sources or any editorial oversight, which makes them unreliable by Wikipedia standards. For a site to be linked it would also need to add something which would not already be covered in a Good Article.
If you are interested you can read about what should be in a settlement article here.--Charles (talk) 21:50, 1 November 2012 (UTC)
Thanks Charles, as I said, most of the links were already there before my edit so should have been picked up earlier if they were not allowed. I will contact Mid Sussex DC to see if I can get them to update the incorrect information on their Pease Pottage page. Pottager (talk) 11:43, 3 November 2012 (UTC)

HELLO Charlesdrakew

You have deleted a website link on external links category on http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Valley_of_Flowers_National_Park posted by me. I understand your concern about spams on wikipedia. But please go through the website www.valleyofflowers.info and you will understand that the website is worth watching for someone who what to know more about Valley of flowers national parks. In fact it is the most descriptive website for valley of flowers national parks. I think you should allow this link to be put on the page for the help of everyone. Thanks and regards. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 14.102.95.92 (talk) 17:45, 2 November 2012 (UTC)

It is SPAM and will not be allowed in before hell freezes over.--Charles (talk) 18:28, 2 November 2012 (UTC)

What do you mean sir... hell... have you ever been to valley of flowers.. I love my valley of flowers.. its my wife... i am serious.. kindly be patient.. no personal issues brother..kindly tell me the definition of spam. Spam never mean any link brother. I am sorry to be offensive but I am forced to do so. I will never visit this website. But for sure I would like you to visit Valley of flowers with me. You are the best critic. I will learn a lot from you brother. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 14.102.107.207 (talk) 16:39, 10 November 2012 (UTC)

Highland Cattle

Hi

You undid a correction to a picture of a Highland Cow which was captioned "A Highland Cattle" on the grounds that cattle can be singular or plural and it being impossible to tell its gender. Could I ask the basis for these assertions as according to Chambers:

cattle /katˈl/ plural noun Bovine mammals of the genus Bos, esp oxen, bulls and cows Domesticated mammals including oxen, etc and also horses, sheep, etc (archaic) ORIGIN: OFr catel, chatel, from LL captāle, L capitāle, from caput the head — Preceding unsigned comment added by TimGJ1964 (talkcontribs) 18:00, 14 November 2012 (UTC)

I have been around cattle markets since I could walk and heard it used as both singular and plural although the singular usage may be uncommon. Wiktionary has it as usually plural but does not say it is exclusively so. I do not know of any other gender neutral singular word for bovines other than bovine. This is not Simple English and I think it adds to the richness of the project to include some more unusual and interesting terms.--Charles (talk) 20:03, 14 November 2012 (UTC)

Hiya

I please help me edit Breeze 1521AM. It was part of my life for such a long time. Please advise me what I need to do to keep my post on here as this comes from me the horses mouth, as I lived the staion as an employee and champion of it.

Hope you can help

Sorry . It is really not something that interests me. The teahouse will advise you on how to edit.--Charles (talk) 11:45, 27 November 2012 (UTC)

Your message to another editor at User talk:Ian.thomson

Thought you might like to know the editor was blocked earlier today for 72 hours for adding inappropriate external links. Dougweller (talk) 12:45, 27 November 2012 (UTC)

Ah. I had not noticed. I think the editor may just be ignorant of our standards and am assuming good faith for a bit longer.--Charles (talk) 12:52, 27 November 2012 (UTC)
I had explained "personal sites aren't used as sources" on his talk page, and his response was more or less "there's another website that I think is personal being used as a source, take that down or I'll continue to add mine." Two wrongs apparently do make a right. Ian.thomson (talk) 14:26, 27 November 2012 (UTC)

Worcester

Hi Charles,

I believe you have edited Worcester has an approximate population of 100,000 and changed the figure to 94,000. You will see further down the page on the right hand side beneath the population section it states that the mid-2011 estimate for the population of Worcester is 98,700 and therefore 100,000 is a much more accurate approximation than 94,000. The website below is evidence of the 98,700 figure. I'm not sure if I have done this right, but hope it reaches you!

Hi there. That is a useful resource you have linked here. It does however say that the Worcester City population for mid 2009 was 94,700. I had looked at the demography section but not the infobox and the infobox should be in synch with the body of the article. When the 2011 census figures are finally available we will be able to use those. It would help if you explained your edits in the edit summary box above the save button.--Charles (talk) 17:43, 29 November 2012 (UTC)

Re. Swaffham

I understand the event was reported in the Eastern Daily Press when it occurred in 1990, but there is no online publication of this. The event remains well recalled throughout East Anglia, and is frequently referenced by Hill himself in current broadcasts of his TV show "You've Been Framed".

It is certainly more interesting than that a distant cousin of a well-known Victorian archaeologist once worked in the town. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.31.211.49 (talk) 17:59, 29 November 2012 (UTC)

A reference does not have to be available online as long as it is genuine. How can we be sure this is not an urban myth propagated by Hill? It may be better to say he claims it happened. On your other point I see that person is notable for carving village signs rather than their ancestry.--Charles (talk) 18:25, 29 November 2012 (UTC)

His references to the event are regular but oblique: he tends not to explain the events plainly, but make amusing bitter remarks operating as a kind of public in-joke; it is well understood locally. You would have to watch an episode of the show (if you enjoy the amalgamated kitsch and schadenfreude) to see what I mean. It’s currently airing on ITV. Clarify my line if you wish.

I’m certainly not suggesting other bloke should be removed, just that this is of greater general and contemporary interest. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.31.211.49 (talk) 19:23, 29 November 2012 (UTC)

I am not a big fan of Hill so I will take your word for it. You should sign your talk page posts by clicking the pen icon in the edit toolbar.--Charles (talk) 20:55, 29 November 2012 (UTC)
Incidentally, for the unregistered editor (why not get an account?) - if you can find a copy of the Eastern Daily Press that mentioned it, so that for example you could tell us (at least) the date it was mentioned, the headline of the piece that mentioned it, and the page number it appeared on, that would be a much stronger piece of evidence in favour of the inclusion of whatever it is that you're discussing. --Demiurge1000 (talk) 21:07, 29 November 2012 (UTC)
Harry Hill (the one with the Burp) allegedly being attacked by a swan in a supermarket in Swaffham. Bizarre or what?--Charles (talk) 21:13, 29 November 2012 (UTC)

Yes, quite remarkable; hence I believe the noteworthiness. Though not enough for me to spend the day going though age old newspapers in some dusty cupboard miles away in Norwich. Understandably however, the event remains famous in local memory, and also is referred to by the subject himself in mass media. Repeating myself now, stop. I don’t contribute enough to warrant an account, but point taken. I’m not a fan of his TV work either, but some people seem to think he’s all that. Pen icon you say? --86.31.211.49 (talk) 21:53, 29 November 2012 (UTC)

You seem to have found that icon. The highlight of my one visit to Swaffham was the Angel hammerbeam roof in the church. Quite remarkable.--Charles (talk) 22:14, 29 November 2012 (UTC)

Never visited this church, I prefer the Norfolk churches with the round towers. That said, I highly recommend Booton church in Norfolk, it’s utterly bonkers. --86.31.211.49 (talk) 22:27, 29 November 2012 (UTC)

Ah yes. It has its own page.--Charles (talk) 22:39, 29 November 2012 (UTC)

Funny how that wiki photo makes it like some lost Taj Mahal. For me, one of the most memorable features of it is a duzzy great blackened figure of St. Michael with massive wings and a real whomping sword; he looks down at you over the entrance alongside the road. The church also looks quite awesome from a distance; nothing like any of the other churches in view. --86.31.211.49 (talk) 23:47, 29 November 2012 (UTC)
