Savernake Forest
editHello, I noticed that in your first edit of this piece, you removed the reference to farms that have been carved out of Savernake Forest, including that of William Levett, a courtier to King Charles I. You may be accurate in that some of the previous entry was cut-and-pasted from the history recounted elsewhere, but this information on farms within the Forest was certainly not lifted from such a source. It was original research on my part, and I think it adds to the piece and would like to restore it. Regards, MarmadukePercy (talk) 19:19, 15 June 2009 (UTC)
- Ah, okay. I had another look and now see the information to which I referred has been moved to a footnote. Sorry, I hadn't noticed that. Do you suppose it might be moved somewhere within the main text? (You seem to know a lot about the Forest!). Regards, MarmadukePercy (talk) 19:26, 15 June 2009 (UTC)
Thanks for your comments. I knew that the farms section was not pasted and I debated with myself whether to let it stay in situ. The trouble was it was a bit of a distraction from the flow of all the (endless) wardens! Also, there seems to be no sign of these farms in present-day Savernake which made the info on the 3 farms something of a cul-de-sac, which is why I decided to footnote them. But I have no objection to reverting them to the main text ... or maybe a small section on "Farms" which over time other people might add to. ? I used to live 40mins drive from Savernake; sadly that is no longer the case. I have walked many old forests and have always considered Savernake to be something special. You're welcome. I could see that you were very familiar with the Forest, which makes the entry more vivid. I can see your point about the farms interrupting the flow where it was before, but I do think it would stand alone nicely as a small section on "Farms." I appreciate your suggestion on that. I hope you've found other good places to walk, too. Regards, MarmadukePercy (talk) 21:01, 16 June 2009 (UTC)
I found your farms, which are 2 - 3 km west of Savernake. There is so much info on farms and settlements and it's all available on www.british-history.ac.uk So I just tweaked the footnote slightly and have created a 'Further Reading' section for those who want to get really involved.
