PIRAZ Torpedo Boat Destroyer
editI plan to revert your edit of the PIRAZ article to restore the reference to torpedo boat destroyers. I recognize modern destroyers do much more than the original torpedo boat destroyer concept. The anti-submarine and anti-aircraft roles had become predominant before the mid-20th century, and today's destroyers perform the role of earlier cruisers. The PIRAZ shotgun assignment, however, was a specific throwback to the original anti-torpedo boat role. The PIRAZ cruisers could provide their own anti-aircraft protection, but mounted inadequate numbers of quick firing guns to effectively combat torpedo boats such as those that engaged the Turner Joy and Maddox in 1964. The North Vietnamese had no submarines, but their torpedo boats were regarded as the primary naval threat in the Tonkin Gulf. Thewellman (talk) 22:11, 26 January 2009 (UTC)
