Re :Edward Tyrer - Commissioner of Police, Hong Kong

edit

I have added several sentences of new information about the mysteries surrounding this man and what had perhaps led to his removal from office. I served in the HK Police for a short spell (1965-1971) and while posted to Police HQ in 1968, I was told my boss (" Hawker Jones" who was, himself about to retire) that Tyrer had once been "Mr. Egg". Years later in conversations with various senior police officers nobody seemed to know about this story. More recently with the power of internet research getting easier by the day, I decided to delve into this story. Within hours I had Tyrer tracked down to when he had indeed been Edward Tyrer Egg and had changed his name in 1945, just before joining the HK Police Force.

I have also removed an incorrect reference to Tyrer suggesting he had once been associated with the police band. The contributor quoted a London Gazette as the source of this information but he clearly read this reference out of context. Tyrer's name appears on the quoted Gazette page as a "Member of the Colonial Police Force Contingent". The earlier contributor failed to look back at previous Gazette pages. These detail the Parade Order for all the military and police units listed in the subsequent pages, who were attending the ceremonial funeral of King George VI on 19th June 1952. The Police Band preceded the Colonial Police Contingent.

Thank you so much for providing new information as well as correcting some facts in the entry of Edward Tyrer. The article looks even better and complete now. As regard to the date and place of birth of Tyrer, since the information is supported by two published sources and there is no counter-arguing sources available as far as I concern, it is my opinion that the use of "claimed to have been" is being too cautious and is unnecessary. Besides, knowing that you served in the Force, I wonder would it be possible for you to help find out the exact date of death of Tyrer through your connection with the retirees of the Force? I know there is a retiree association called the Royal Hong Kong Police Association. Do you think they may offer assistance? Thanks again!--Clithering (talk) 06:59, 15 September 2013 (UTC)Reply

Sorry do not know date of Tyrer's death. There is a reference/additional information below the main article: "Ex-police chief takes secret of his departure to the grave". This is a South China Morning Post piece written by the late Kevin Sinclair. It was published on 05 September 2004. Sinclair does not provide the exact date of death but says that Tyrer had died recently at his home in Bedfordshire. Its a good starting point for research.

Thank you for your contributions. Please mark your edits, such as your recent edits to BBC World Service, as "minor" only if they are minor edits. In accordance with Help:Minor edit, a minor edit is one that the editor believes requires no review and could never be the subject of a dispute. Minor edits consist of things such as typographical corrections, formatting changes or rearrangement of text without modification of content. Additionally, the reversion of clear-cut vandalism and test edits may be labeled "minor". Thank you. Mutt Lunker (talk) 08:27, 17 March 2014 (UTC)Reply

Thank you for your explanation about what is 'not a minor edit'. I apologize for not understanding the Wiki policy on this. Concerning the substance of the edit., it is factual and the transmission of the service was cut abruptly this morning. I have a witness who has reported this to me and who has subsequently complained to the BBC in London. Whether the cut is temporary or permanent remains to be seen. Thank you.

This is interesting but you will need what Wikipedia classes as a reliable source on the matter. I'm not passing comment on your witness but they are not likely to count as an RS, so you will need to find one before adding the material. Mutt Lunker (talk) 10:21, 17 March 2014 (UTC)Reply
