Hi there, Chocmilk03, and welcome to Women in Red. I see that over the past two or three weeks you have created quite a number of biographies of NZ writers, including several about women. You seem to have grasped the essentials of Wikipedia editing but if you now want to concentrate on women, you might find it useful to browse through our Ten Simple Rules and our Primer for creating women's biographies. Please let me know if you run into any difficulties or need assistance. Happy editing!--Ipigott (talk) 12:13, 27 October 2020 (UTC)Reply

Luminaries/Catton

edit

Hi there! I've noticed you working on NZ literature. If you found yourself at a loose end and wanted to help with Eleanor Catton or The Luminaries, that would be great. I'll be adding bits to them over the next couple of weeks. Cheers, Giantflightlessbirds (talk) 03:10, 20 February 2021 (UTC)Reply

@Giantflightlessbirds: Sure, very happy to help! Such a great book. Is there anything in particular that needs attention? Chocmilk03 (talk) 08:48, 20 February 2021 (UTC)Reply
My additions have all been stitched together from news sources, so could do with an edit so they flow better. I'm trying to find a recent citation for when Catton moved to the UK. And with The Luminaries more critical discussion would be good (LRB? New York Review?), and a fuller account of the origins and the writing of the book. I'll be adding photos of locations mentioned in the book from local museum collections. Also I haven't even looked at the TV adaptation article, which could do with being made consistent with the other two, and some of those sources can be carried over into it. Ta! —Giantflightlessbirds (talk) 09:23, 20 February 2021 (UTC)Reply
Thank you, all makes sense! Will tinker around. I have started re-reading the book which may slow me down a bit, haha (I read it & loved it back in 2013, but that was awhile ago now). Just to highlight that I am a bit nervous about the paragraph I've just added about critical reception — seems potentially controversial and might need more thought. Autopatrolled

edit

Hi Chocmilk03, I just wanted to let you know that I have added the "autopatrolled" permission to your account, as you have created numerous, valid articles. This feature will have no effect on your editing, and is simply intended to reduce the workload on new page patrollers. For more information on the autopatrolled right, see Wikipedia:Autopatrolled. However, you should consider adding relevant wikiproject talk-page templates, stub-tags and categories to new articles that you create if you aren't already in the habit of doing so, since your articles will no longer be systematically checked by other editors (User:Evad37/rater and User:SD0001/StubSorter.js are useful scripts which can help). Feel free to leave me a message if you have any questions. Happy editing! Schwede66 15:54, 9 April 2021 (UTC)Reply

Draft:Lexie Matheson name question

edit

Hi there! I just have a quick question about naming conventions. Whilst Lexie Matheson's full name is Alexandra Mary Raine Matheson, if you google that you get almost no results, and she is known as Lexie. I wonder if it would be worth just changing the name in the lead to Lexie Matheson, and put her full name in the infobox? I tried to look at the naming conventions, but couldn't find anything that meets this scenario! Thank you. Nauseous Man (talk) 20:41, 9 November 2021 (UTC)Reply

@Nauseous Man: Hello! Great work on the draft article (which I'm sure will be accepted shortly!), and good question. The way Wikipedia approaches this, as I understand it, is generally that the full legal name goes in the lead; see MOS:FULLNAME which states:

While the article title should generally be the name by which the subject is most commonly known, the subject's full name, if known, should usually be given in the lead sentence (including middle names, if known, or middle initials). Many cultures have a tradition of not using the full name of a person in everyday reference, but the article should start with the complete version in most cases.

For example the page Witi Ihimaera which I've been working on has his full name Witi Tame Ihimaera-Smiler in the lead, even though very few people would be looking for him by that name. Another example is Bill Clinton, which has William Jefferson Clinton in the lead. In my view Lexie is a common enough abbreviation of Alexandra, like Bill for William, that you don't need to include it in the lead per MOS:NICKNAME. Although if you did think there could be any doubt and wanted to add it back in, the way to format it would be Alexandra Mary Raine "Lexie" Matheson (note the nickname is put before her last name in quotation marks, which are not bolded). Remember also that 'Lexie Matheson' will be right up the top as the name of the article, as well as at the top of her infobox, so it should be fairly clear to people who the page is about.
Does that help / answer the question? Cheers, Chocmilk03 (talk) 21:54, 9 November 2021 (UTC)Reply
@Chocmilk03: absolutely! Thanks so much for the clarification. I will leave it as is, and see what the reviewer thinks about it. I'm surprised that there's a two month window for it to be reviewed! Thanks for your help and kind words! Nauseous Man (talk) 23:40, 9 November 2021 (UTC)Reply
