Scally's Birthday

edit

I can't remember the date, but his 40th birthday was a Saturday when we had a home fixture in his first season, and we were given Happy Birthday placards at the gate to wave around (I desisted): well into the season, and I think I recall decent weather, so it might have been Spring time. Do you have a stash of programmes from that era? (I don't). If congratulations can be considered due for a present, given that the present reflects dedication to a course, congratulations on the HotSM. Kevin McE (talk) 20:54, 26 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

William McGregor

edit

I may have just the thing to make William McGregor more comprehensive. I've just acquired a copy of League Football and the Men Who Made It by Simon Inglis. The first fifteen pages are largely about him, and judging by the index there's plenty more later on. Oldelpaso (talk) 11:53, 28 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

It can't be far off now. Thanks for sorting out my hamfistedness, which I swear gets worse by the day. There's a few more bits and pieces which I'm not sure where to place. He was a teetotaller and supporter of the Temperance Movement, and before football dominated his schedule he was an active member of the Liberal Party. It might also be an idea to ask Woody if there's anything extra in his Villa books.
Reading chapters of this book there's loads of interesting characters deserving decent articles. But for today I'm done, as I'm off to the stadium whose groundsman left a message on my talkpage earlier today :s Oldelpaso (talk) 17:16, 28 January 2009 (UTC)Reply
Oh, and if you think McGregor was bad with kids names, check out George Foreman or Emlyn Hughes. Oldelpaso (talk) 17:20, 28 January 2009 (UTC)Reply
A couple of things I've spotted where sources contradict each other: Inglis' book says "McGregor first saw football being played by stonemasons when he was aged about seven... ...Thereafter, McGregor didn't see another football again until around 1870 when he was drawn south to Birmingham" (p1). On the baseball influence: "Some sources suggest that the idea for a league came from the recently formed National Baseball League in the United States. McGregor, however, always cited the County [Cricket] Championship as his model." (p7) Perhaps the old state both sources with attribution approach is the way to go. Oldelpaso (talk) 13:13, 29 January 2009 (UTC)Reply
His grave is apparently modest, with no mentions of his achievements. Hope you find it! I'll probably not be around much for a few days now. I work a weird shift pattern, and I'm back on from tomorrow. Oldelpaso (talk) 13:50, 29 January 2009 (UTC)Reply
Even if it wasn't fruitful, I think going at all was above and beyond the call of duty :) Oldelpaso (talk) 11:01, 31 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

Go for it. Oldelpaso (talk) 10:43, 8 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

All quiet on the FAC front. I'm off on a Euro away match trip soon, so the chances are I won't be able to respond to any FAC comments for the rest of the week. Oldelpaso (talk) 16:09, 16 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

Hi, good work with the William McGregor article. Unfortunately, I've noticed that the photo you have uploaded of the Olympic team appears to be an old Charles Alcock. I may be mistaken but it's worth a double check Villafanuk 10 March 2009 —Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.90.237.107 (talk) 01:17, 11 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

Your right, it's not Alcock, although I knew I'd seen the face before. You only have to look at the photo to see its not McGregor. I think it's Arthur Kinnaird - see what you think: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arthur_Kinnaird,_11th_Lord_Kinnaird Villafanuk 12 March 2009 (UTC) —Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.90.237.107 (talk)

Gills' first game

edit

While looking at the pages in relation to your first game query (I would suggest a prose mention of the prior reserves' run-out in the history article, but only first team in any table or record claim), I noticed that the "other" first match is described as a friendly here, but as the first competitive match here (first paragraph). Assuming the game vs Arsenal reserves was a friendly (I can't imagine hat competition it would have been in), should the Ilford cup game get a specific mention in the text? Taffy Jones

edit

Thanks for your sleuthing. I've merged the two articles now (into the Herbert Jones (footballer) title). Just in case there's any confusion, now or in the future, the list of his international appearances in the link you provided repeats his appearance against Ireland on 22 October 1927, so the six international caps mentioned in his article is correct. - Dudesleeper / Talk 01:14, 2 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

Arular

edit
Evidently I don't which is why it's still on the article. I'm interested to know how establishing "that philly sound" on Piracy funds terrorism is relevant to the album though. :-) Roomiebroom (talk) 11:55, 2 February 2009 (UTC)Reply
No worries dude. The cite is confusing. According to the pitchfork interview in 2007, She says he sent her a loop for Bucky while she was in London, and Piracy was made on a trip to Philadelphia. I think I'm going to remove the part where it says it was made in Philadelphia, unless there's another few refs. Also I think Power Power was what her second album was going to be called. I think seeing as it's part of cover art, perhaps artwork would be the best suggestion I have for it. :-) Roomiebroom (talk) 12:12, 2 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

Ryan Flynn

edit

Hi. I was looking at Liverpool FC's page today and thought about adding a page for Ryan Flynn. Noted you deleted on 29 Jan because of previous deletes. Given he has now played for the club he is at loan on, isn't a new page valid? - or is the conference not considered a fully professional league? Steve-Ho (talk) 14:36, 2 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

2007–08 in English football

edit

You mentioned earlier about possibly working on an English football season article. I've been chipping away at 2007–08 in English football a little, mainly just trying to arrange the content before picking through it in detail. As none of the current infoboxes seemed to fit the purpose, I've just created a new template, Template:Infobox football country season. It's incredibly basic at the moment while I get to grips with how templates work, but I should be able to add more parameters in due course. I would prefer not to deploy the infobox anywhere just yet, in case any of the parameters change (I intend to invite further input from WPFOOTY, but thought I'd get your initial thoughts first - in any case it would seem sensible to wait until a "stable" version is reached before using it anywhere). I thought about adding the winner of each league division and cup competition to the infobox, perhaps with the progress of the national team in a tournament year. I'd make the parameters generic so that any named competition could be added, up to a sensible limit. Some of the main info in sections such as Promotion and relegation and Honours could then be merged into the prose and/or the infobox (once deployed). Any input you have on this would be welcomed. --Jameboy (talk) 21:35, 4 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

You're right, the promoted and relegated teams would make it unwieldy. I'll see what I can do with it next week when my wikibreak is over. Cheers. --Jameboy (talk) 22:10, 5 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

Benjamin Howard Baker

edit

Hi Chris - can you help me with regard to a dispute that I've been having with User:82.45.193.152 with regard to the proper name of Benjamin Howard Baker. We have been having a rather silly dispute about the content of the section of the article headed "Surname" and whether or not "all" or merely "most" contemporary sources give his surname as simply "Baker", rather than " Howard Baker" (with or without a hyphen). I prefer the latter and have given my reasons and sources on the article's talk page, but these seem to cut no ice with him. He won't enter into any discussion, but gives all his explanations via the edit summaries, some of which to be frank, are overly aggressive, or maybe I'm being over-sensitive.

I have tried to be reasonable and have left messages on his talk page, but he doesn't respond.

It might help to know that this user is actually the author Cris Freddi who claims to be "the FA's England statto". (Maybe that's why the historical information on The FA's website is so poor). He may be a "resource" as he suggests, although most of his edits have been counter-productive.

Sorry to go on - if you can help, I'd appreciate it. If you think that I'm in the wrong in any way, please let me know. Cheers. --Daemonic Kangaroo (talk) 16:20, 23 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

newcomer on GFC article

edit

You may have noticed that I have reverted some good faith edits by a new editor, User:Ecfc, on the main Gillingham F.C. article, and left him an "I don't mean to bite" note to explain that it is only because it is a Featured article that I didn't leave his contributions there. I do think he has a valid point that at least the Peacock era might be worth mentioning in the summarised history, with due referencing. Kevin McE (talk) 21:18, 24 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

Complete lists of footballers

Wonder if you could offer an opinion... The monstrosity which is List of Birmingham City F.C. players with fewer than 50 appearances currently stands at 55kB, but at the moment only contains players with at least 10 appearances. If I add the last batch, the size will more than double, to 113kB, which strikes me as a bit big: your second list is 98kB, and the Port Vale one is 102kB. Do you think 113kB is still OK, given that if I split it again at that point on grounds of size, people might question my sanity: who in their right mind would want to look at a List of Birmingham City F.C. players with fewer than 10 appearances... cheers, Struway2 (talk) 11:19, 25 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

Having looked at that page, I think I might as well just stick the last batch on and hope it doesn't need too much tweaking, at least not when my internet connection's feeling delicate...
