When it's one author

Hi, Chris Capoccia. I saw this[1]. So when it's one author, "last1" and "first1" should also be used? Or is this done for uniformity? I thought when it's just one author, "last" and "first" are the default. GBFEE (talk) 19:20, 23 December 2021 (UTC)

i'm not writing these entries by hand. for the book, using the Wikipedia:RefToolbar to fill in from the Google URL. For journal articles, mostly from DOI.  — Chris Capoccia 💬 13:54, 24 December 2021 (UTC)
Got it. But then I guess that means the tools are starting off with "last1" and "first1." I'd alter it when it's one author. GBFEE (talk) 19:47, 24 December 2021 (UTC)

All the content was deleted

Hi Chris, I was working on editing Suresh Canagarajah's page: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Suresh_Canagarajah. And I've noticed that you removed all the content I uploaded. So, I was wondering if there's anything wrong with it and anything I need to do to prevent this.

Thank you! — Preceding unsigned comment added by PSU-ASC (talkcontribs) 21:20, 4 January 2022 (UTC)

i don't know what you're talking about. it wasn't me. review the history of the page and you'll see it was someone else.  — Chris Capoccia 💬 13:53, 5 January 2022 (UTC)

For chapters

I added a citation, "Sex-Based Differences in Lung Physiology", where I want it to focus on the chapter.[2]. Will you show me the appropriate way to do that? I feel I didn't do everything right. GBFEE (talk) 21:10, 11 January 2022 (UTC)

pretty good, although i think you wanted the chapter-url parameter instead of url. also you can have citation bot build the whole citation from DOI like this diff.  — Chris Capoccia 💬 21:17, 11 January 2022 (UTC)
Thank you. GBFEE (talk) 21:27, 11 January 2022 (UTC)

Donough MacCarty, 1st Earl of Clancarty

Dear Chris Capoccia. Thanks for your attention to the article Donough MacCarty, 1st Earl of Clancarty. You changed:

"*{{Cite web|last=Coolahan |first=Marie-Louise |date=9 May 2019 |title=Dowdall [née Southwell], Elizabeth |website=[[Oxford Dictionary of National Biography]] |doi=10.1093/odnb/9780198614128.013.112775 |isbn=978-0-19-861412-8 |url=https://www.oxforddnb.com/view/10.1093/ref:odnb/9780198614128.001.0001/odnb-9780198614128-e-112775 |access-date=14 March 2021 |url-access=subscription}} – Online edition"

->

"*{{Cite ODNB |last=Coolahan |first=Marie-Louise |date=9 May 2019 |title=Dowdall [née Southwell], Elizabeth |doi=10.1093/odnb/9780198614128.013.112775 }}".

You are a much more experienced editor than I am, and you seem to specialise in correct referencing. I would like to learn from you and do my references right next time. You surely agree that we edit Wikipedia to improve it. I do not see the improvement here. Why should "Cite ODNB" be preferred over "Cite web"? I find it does not make sense to invent special templates for particular "important" sources, and even less sense to enforce the use of such templates. I feel we should limit ourselves to "Cite book", "Cite journal", "Cite news", "Cite web" (these are the ones supported by the Visual Editor). I was once a fan of "Citation", but abandoned it. In the present case I used "Cite web" specifically because I found this ODNB article on the website, not in the book. We have lost the link to the source as you have removed the URL parameter and clicking the DOI provokes an error "Not found". This DOI had been added by Citation Bot on 7 April 2021 and should be correct. The error results, seems it, from the access restriction, but this is not obvious to the wider reader. Besides, should there really be a space between the template name and the pipe of the first parameter? —and after the end of the last parameter's argument? Perhaps there should, but I have never done so and have seldom been corrected for this. With many thanks and best regards, Johannes Schade (talk) 10:01, 18 January 2022 (UTC)

There are specialized templates better suited to all kinds of specialized cases. Template:Cite ODNB is the best for Oxford Dictionary of National Biography.  — Chris Capoccia 💬 11:22, 18 January 2022 (UTC)
Dear Chris Capoccia. Thank you very much for your quick reply. We agree of course: obviously {{ODNB}} is a specialised template. However, it does not suit the special case we have here because it gives the unfriendly error "Not found" for an DOI that is perfectly fine. I find the {{Cite web}} did better job. With thanks and best regards, Johannes Schade (talk) 13:09, 18 January 2022 (UTC)
ODNB has a broken DOI so I set up the URL in the template instead.  — Chris Capoccia 💬 14:01, 18 January 2022 (UTC)
Dear Chris Capoccia. Your change surely is an improvement upon the previous version as the user now gets a message "You do not currently have access to this article" instead of "Not found". Thank you for the improvement. However, why did you replace "Cite web" with "ODNB" in the first place? Where is the improvement there? Are you busy with or envisaging mass replacements of "Cite web" or "Cite book" with "ODNB"? I would object to that. That would bring you many thousands of edits for your edit count but would IMHO not improve Wikipedia. With thanks and best regards, Johannes Schade (talk) 09:01, 19 January 2022 (UTC)

Edit Query

Hi Chris, I have been working on the 'spiritual philosophy' Wikipedia page as part of my university assignment. For the task we have to publish 2000 words to a stub Wikipedia article. Thank you for your help in editing my assignment. I have noticed that you have deleted a substantial amount of the 'Spiritual philosophy in religion' 'Buddhism' and 'Hinduism' sub sections. I was just wondering if you could please advise me of what was wrong for my own learning purposes? DYK for Hickson Inc.

On 25 October 2022, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Hickson Inc., which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that in the 1920s, Hickson Inc. had the "most elegant and expensive specialty shop" on New York's Fifth Avenue? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Hickson Inc.. You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, Hickson Inc.), and if they received a combined total of at least 416.7 views per hour (i.e., 5,000 views in 12 hours or 10,000 in 24), the hook may be added to the statistics page. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

Ebscohost

Just a note. I noticed a couple of edits where you removed {{EBSCOhost}} identifiers from citations - perhaps this was an error? It's no different from {{ProQuest}} or {{Project Muse}} in that it provides a closed-access link, usually to a PDF. (The PDF link is on the upper left of the ebsco page). Olivaw-Daneel (talk) 01:40, 29 November 2022 (UTC)

i tried clicking them and got nowhere but a login screen without even any bibliographic data to say whether it was to the correct item. is there any way for people to validate ebsco numbers used in citations? normally for other identifiers you at least get things like author and title and maybe an abstract even if access to the item is restricted.  — Chris Capoccia 💬 01:45, 29 November 2022 (UTC)
I access it though the Wikipedia Library - [3]. I just have to log in to TWL and all of those template links automatically work for me. I do agree that it's difficult to validate without access; perhaps the template's creators might know of a way. Olivaw-Daneel (talk) 01:55, 29 November 2022 (UTC)
i tried clicking log in via wikipedia, but even after that, when i click on a ebscohost number link, i still get only a login screen and no access to anything. At least things like ProQuest or Project MUSE give you the title and author when you don't have access.  — Chris Capoccia 💬 02:02, 29 November 2022 (UTC)
Hmm I'm not an expert, but here's one last try, since anyone who can log in to the Wikipedia Library should have Ebscohost access (it's what powers their search button). Maybe you need to use it once (e.g. by doing a search) before it saves the cookies that remember you. The search box on top of [4] uses Ebsco; something simple like "hello world" might do the trick. Shauna Bloom

It doesn't matter much seeing as the article is most likely about to be deleted (see Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Shauna Bloom) but just figured I'd let you know that your latest edits on that page appear to be in violation of MOS:STYLERET. I'm not undoing them because there's not much point, but just letting you know that rule exists in case you weren't aware. QuietHere (talk) 17:59, 22 January 2023 (UTC)

@QuietHere I know about that rule, but there's no way the 14-Jan rev has any kind of consistent cite style that I would be switching the article to a different style   — Chris Capoccia 💬 18:23, 22 January 2023 (UTC)
Looks pretty consistent to me. All written in text rather than templated, "nowiki" around URLs, things like that. More capital letters than necessary but otherwise nothing too out of place. Having had a look through the page history, it doesn't appear that any one editor ever defined that style and it may have just happened incidentally at some point since 2018, but even so it's been that way for a while. I dunno, like I said it doesn't matter 'cause the page is gone in days' time anyway; just figured it's worth keeping in mind for the future anyway. QuietHere (talk) 18:51, 22 January 2023 (UTC)
No idea what you're looking at. First 2 cites use templates, one with incorrect chapter name and missing author, one with unhyphenated ISBN. The two LA Times cites have a different date format than everything else. The Backstage cite has first name first unlike the others. Second LA Times cite has 2 URLs but the linked title matches the ProQuest URL and not the linked LA Times URL. Both bare ProQuest URLs subject to link rot.  — Chris Capoccia 💬 19:15, 22 January 2023 (UTC)

Henry VI

I was not sure if you checked that source you shortened/fixed. But it does not appear to mention Henry VI's son's death at Tewkesbury, Henry's death from melancholia, or Historie of the arrivall of Edward IV. --Kansas Bear (talk) 00:47, 28 January 2023 (UTC)

no, i was just reformatting. but it didn't take that long to find a different source that actually said something.  — Chris Capoccia 💬 01:13, 28 January 2023 (UTC)
Ok. It is all good. --Kansas Bear (talk) 01:16, 28 January 2023 (UTC)

Please stop removing ISSN numbers

You are removing the ISSN numbers for sources for which there is a DOI # or a JSTOR #. Please stop. Citations with a DOI # or a JSTOR # are often behind paywalls, & an ISSN can sometimes help some readers find the physical copy in a library. Peaceray (talk) 23:55, 27 January 2023 (UTC)

Modern libraries let you get directly to the article with the DOI. JSTOR lets you log in and read articles. ISSN only identifies the periodical and does not help most people get directly to any article. But OK, I hadn't heard of anyone doing anything useful with ISSN when there was a more specific identifier for the article.  — Chris Capoccia 💬 00:03, 28 January 2023 (UTC)
Does everyone who has access to the Internet & Wikipedia have access to modern libraries? While this may be the case for most, I am certain that it is not the case for all. Peaceray (talk) 18:02, 30 January 2023 (UTC)
also lots of library items are listed at worldcat, and OCLC can be added that seems more useful to me than ISSN.  — Chris Capoccia 💬 00:14, 28 January 2023 (UTC)
Of the two, I also think that the OCLC is more important & useful than the ISSN. However, I will not that some citation tools, specifically citer.toolforge.org/citer.fcgi routinely include the ISSN in journal citations. To remove them seems like a Sisyphean task & probably will lead to inconsistency. Peaceray (talk) 18:09, 30 January 2023 (UTC)

Jim May (chemical engineer)

Hi Chris Capoccia,

Thank you so much for the refining of sources in both the Alan Jackson (businessman) article and the Nylex Plastics article. Is it possible for you to do the very same editing on the Jim May (chemical engineer) article as well? I am having trouble doing that, when it comes to not duplicating the same source when it is needed in multiple places. Thanks again. Carey3146 (talk) 22:50, 12 March 2023 (UTC)

History of the Internet

Hi Chris, I saw your improvements to the History of the Internet article, thank you. I'm working on the Protocol Wars article. It's already a good article and I'm working towards bringing it forward as a featured article candidate. Are there any similar citation improvements that are easy for you to make on that article?
