Motto of the day
Hello, I notice you're using one of the {{motd}} templates, run by Wikipedia:Motto of the day. You may have noticed that some of the mottos recently have been followed by a date from 2006, or on occasion simply "Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia". The reason for this is that Motto of the day is in some very serious need of help. Participation in the project, which has never been especially high, has dropped considerably over this past summer, to the point we have had several days where no motto was scheduled to appear at all. Over the past several weeks, I've been the only editor scheduling mottos at all, but there aren't enough comments on some of these mottos to justify their use. If we do not get some help - and soon - your daily mottos will stop. In order for us to continue updating these templates for you, we need your help.
When you get a chance between your normal editing, could you stop by our nominations page and leave a few comments on some of the mottos there, especially those that do not have any comments yet? This works very simply; you read a motto, decide whether or not you like it, and post your opinion just below the motto. That's it - no experience required, just an idea of what you personally like and what you feel reflects Wikipedia and its community. If you do have past experience with the project, then please close some of the older nominations once they've got a decent consensus going. There are directions on the nominations page on how to do this.
If you have any questions, please let me know, or post on the project's talk page. I'm looking forward to reading your comments on the suggested mottos, and any additional suggestions you'd like to make. Until then, happy editing! Hersfold (t/a/c) 03:40, 4 September 2008 (UTC)

Admin bots
Hello, I have recently had an encounter with an unapproved admin bot, and despite an extremely clear dictate by policy that these bots should be blocked, have been discouraged from doing so. Depending how this situation resolves, I will likely file an arbitration request to hopefully resolve this issue once and for all. You commented on Wikipedia talk:Requests for comment/Adminbots, stating that you ran an admin bot. To help get an idea of how widespread admin bots are, as well as get a uniform decision, I would like to ask: Do you still operate this bot, and does it operate when you are not present? Please reply on my talk page, thanks, Prodego talk 00:40, 17 September 2008 (UTC)

Dear Chris, thanks for erasing vandalism from my talkpage. :-) AdjustShift (talk) 09:19, 20 September 2008 (UTC)
- Nice work reverting all the other vandalism, you might find a script like twinkle or a program like huggle makes reverting and warning easier --Chris 09:24, 20 September 2008 (UTC)
- Thanks for your kind words. Yes, I want to know about twinkle and huggle. Are they helpful to fight vandalism? AdjustShift (talk) 09:26, 20 September 2008 (UTC)
- Very, they make reverting and warning much easier and huggle makes watching the recent changes feed a breeze --Chris 09:32, 20 September 2008 (UTC)
- And what about Wikipedia:Rollback feature? I've seen users who have this feature. How is Rollback feature different from twinkle and huggle? And how can I add these things? AdjustShift (talk) 09:37, 20 September 2008 (UTC)
- Rollback is a software feature that's a bit like the undo button but faster, it can be given to you by any admin (like me, just ask). Twinkle is a java script tool that can be installed by following the instructions below:

- Copy the text below and paste it into the bottom of your monobook.js file:
importScript('User:AzaToth/twinkle.js');
- Save the new monobook.js page, and
- Completely refresh your browser by bypassing your cache (Firefox: Control-Shift-R / Firefox Mac: Command-Shift-R)
finally huggle is a piece of software that makes watching the recent changes easier and allows you to revert and warn a user at the click of a button (huggle needs rollback to run) --Chris 09:42, 20 September 2008 (UTC)
- Thanks. I've done what you've said. See: User:AdjustShift/monobook.js. How do I know whether I've bypass my browser's cache or not? AdjustShift (talk) 13:34, 20 September 2008 (UTC)
- When you view a user's contribs you should be able to see a little "[rollback] [vandalism]" link --Chris 01:05, 21 September 2008 (UTC)
- Yep! How did that happened??? :-) AdjustShift (talk) 08:22, 21 September 2008 (UTC)
- How will it help me to fight vandalism? Please explain the whole thing! AdjustShift (talk) 08:30, 21 September 2008 (UTC)
- It's just faster than using the undo button, for more info on how to use it see here --Chris 09:54, 21 September 2008 (UTC)

Thanks, but...
Dear Chris, thanks for your help. When I viewed a user's contribs I saw a little "[rollback] [vandalism]" link. But now, they have disappeared. There is no "[rollback] [vandalism]" link. What happened?
And it is difficult to explain a new editor about all these things. My exchange with you has helped me. So I've something for you.

Hey Chris, just a quick question - would it be worthwhile to add a caveat to the cascading protection page at Wikipedia:Main Page/Protection? I was reading through the BRFA, and had a brief moment of panic that the bot had broken the Featured Article - not realizing that the templates are copied over, but not their parameters. I'd propose adding "This bot does not parse template parameters, so the templates below may not reflect the contents of the current Featured Article; Please disregard any errors indicated, as these are normal and expected." Obviously not a huge deal, but - if it won't break anything - it might not be a bad idea. Everything looks good to me, otherwise - good work, that.
