Confusion at Rollback permission page

edit

Just FYI, I didn't mean anything special by "regular edits". Just the requirements listed at WP:AUTOCONFIRMED. My edit count for you came from the count link in your request. At the time I wrote it, I believe you had seven article edits and one user page edit. It only takes four days and ten edits to get autoconfirmed, so once you've reached that threshold, get Twinkle and start vandal fighting. If you find it inadequate after a week or so, ask for rollback and try Huggle. —ShadowRanger (talk|stalk) 00:32, 11 December 2009 (UTC)Reply

I had many more than seven and one, must have been database lag. Note also the fact that right now it says I have 27, which is not correct either. Thanks anyway. :) Chris Rocen (talk) 00:35, 11 December 2009 (UTC)Reply
No problem. I'll acknowledge there is probably some lag, but on the other hand, the experience you need to demonstrate for rollback is such that if a couple hours lag makes the difference, you probably haven't edited enough. Nothing personal at all, the usual standard for Rollback is a month's worth of editing, and a couple hundred vandal fighting actions, including appropriate edit comments in any case where the vandalism isn't flagrant, and user talk page warnings. Basically they want to make sure that you won't start using rollback in content disputes and the like. It's a fairly silly permission; Twinkle performs the same functionality just fine, if somewhat less efficiently than Huggle. But some people who get it aren't interested in Huggle, they just want a more convenient way to edit war. Thus the history requirement. —ShadowRanger (talk|stalk) 00:46, 11 December 2009 (UTC)Reply
Huggle is but one output for rollback, the choice isn't binary between huggling and edit warring. Chris Rocen (talk) 00:47, 11 December 2009 (UTC)Reply
An oversimplification, I'll grant. I still haven't gotten around to installing Huggle (procrastinator of the worst sort), but I do use Rollback over Twinkle when a particularly active vandal needs to be shut down across multiple pages. That's still the root cause of the worry; Rollback and tools that use it can revert edits incredibly fast (faster than Undo or Twinkle alone, hell you could just go down the list at Recent Changes and rollback everything), so they are a little careful about handing it out. —ShadowRanger (talk|stalk) 00:59, 11 December 2009 (UTC)Reply
It makes sense, especially on a site as large and reliant on a trustworthy core userbase as Wikipedia is. Chris Rocen (talk) 01:14, 11 December 2009 (UTC)Reply

Please be more careful using Huggle, as you will notice, it was not me that made the unconstructive edit. Chris Rocen (talk) 01:07, 11 December 2009 (UTC)Reply
Confirmed. I restored Chris's version, which was the good one. —ShadowRanger (talk|stalk) 01:09, 11 December 2009 (UTC)Reply

Hello there Dylan! You were one of the people that my friend mentioned when he was teaching me some stuff about Wikipedia the other day, a coincidence indeed considering the size of Wikipedia. As such it is nice to see a familiar face, even if I've never met you before :) Thanks for the welcome! Chris Rocen (talk) 01:39, 11 December 2009 (UTC)Reply
Very interesting indeed! Say, would you like me to adopt you? --Dylan620 (contribs, logs, review) 02:46, 11 December 2009 (UTC)Reply
It's okay, but thanks for asking -- hopefully when he gets better he can help me out some more, but right now I am mostly enjoying learning the bits he didn't tell me about by myself. Thanks anyway! Chris Rocen (talk) 15:25, 11 December 2009 (UTC)Reply

Igloo WL

edit

Hi there! I saw A8UDI using Igloo a few days ago, and was rather curious -- I was about to add the script to my monobook when I noticed that it was restricted to whitelisted users. Would it be possible to be added to the whitelist? :) Chris Rocen (talk) 14:32, 12 December 2009 (UTC)Reply

Hi Chris Rocen, and thanks for your interest in igloo. Unfortunately, you will not be able to use igloo because you do not have rollback priviliges on your account - as igloo uses this to perform reversions, it is required before you can use the program. You can request rollback at Wikipedia:Requests for permissions/Rollback, but because igloo is in testing and potentially unstable, consider gaining some experience in using rollback before asking for igloo permission again. Thanks, and sorry! Ale_Jrbtalk 14:50, 12 December 2009 (UTC)Reply
Oh, sorry, didn't see that bit. I got told at RFR to come back in a week a few days ago (account is too new apparently), should I just drop a message when I get it? Chris Rocen (talk) 14:53, 12 December 2009 (UTC)Reply
Yep, just let me know. Ale_Jrbtalk 14:55, 12 December 2009 (UTC)Reply
(edit conflict) As for unstable testing, I'm used to that, and would be happy to take a look through the code as well (if you'd like :)) -- I know how rollback works, I've used it on a private wiki which I run (albeit not so frequently as it would be used here due to the privacy of the wiki) and it seems relatively straightforward, if your concern is acquaintance with guidelines and policies surrounding it, I read through them a couple of times before my RFR request. Chris Rocen (talk) 14:57, 12 December 2009 (UTC)Reply
You're welcome to look at the code if you want to: it's freely readable. The startup code is here, main code is here and the library is here. Knock yourself out. Ale_Jrbtalk 15:17, 12 December 2009 (UTC)Reply

Thanks!

Albert Einstein Award Questions on the last edit

edit

Hi Chris,

The modified version of this page looks better, thanks. However I have a few questions/comments: 1- You removed the sentence (sometimes called the Albert Einstein medal...). According to your own summary, this is an unsourced claim. However if you have a look at the references in the article one by one, you will see that many of them refer to it as such. Unfortunately I don't have an access to all the references any longer so I cannot remember which ones. Also it is important to have this sentence, since it was/is very difficult to track the history of this award without this piece of information. 2- You removed the external link. The link has a clear picture of the medal from a museum which holds information about its creation. If you like, we can make it a reference to the gold medal sentence. 3- Finally, you say S. Hawking is the last recipient of the award. How do you know this? Do you have a reference? I had difficulty finding any reliable sources after 1978. Erkcan (talk) 03:00, 13 December 2009 (UTC)Reply

Agree with you on 1 and 2, going to fix them up now. As for three, I made a (perhaps wrong) assumption that the table of recipients was complete, I'll change the caption just to be on the safe side, but it seems he was the last recipient -- I'll try and find out for sure if he was the final recipient later on. Thanks for the message. :) Chris Rocen (talk) 13:03, 13 December 2009 (UTC)Reply
Also, I wonder if I cleaned up one of the images on that page whether they would be suitable to use on the page as fair use to demonstrate the subject. Chris Rocen (talk) 13:07, 13 December 2009 (UTC)Reply
Hi, thanks for the fixes. :-) If you find anything more on the topic, feel free to add. As for the images, I don't know if it can considered as fair use. It might, but I don't have much experience on this topic I am afraid. We need to ask an administrator perhaps.Erkcan (talk) 20:20, 14 December 2009 (UTC)Reply

Rollback granted

edit

I have granted rollback rights to your account; the reason for this is that after a review of some of your contributions, I believe you can be trusted to use rollback correctly, and for its intended usage of reverting vandalism, and that you will not abuse it by reverting good-faith edits or to revert-war. For information on rollback, see Wikipedia:New admin school/Rollback and Wikipedia:Rollback feature. If you do not want rollback, just let me know, and I'll remove it. Good luck and thanks. Thanks. :) Chris Rocen (talk) 16:23, 19 December 2009 (UTC)Reply

Non Free Images in your User Space

Hey there Chris Rocen, thank you for your contributions! I am a bot alerting you that Non-free files are not allowed in the user or talk-space. I removed some images that I found on User:Chris Rocen/Workshop/Live for Speed. In the future, please refrain from adding fair-use images to your user-space drafts or your talk page. ArbCom elections are now open!

edit

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page.
