Citation authorlinks

Hello Ciar, I was wondering if you could share your thoughts/reasoning behind the removal of authorlinks from citations. {{cite journal}} et al explicitly provide such functionality and the use of wikilinking of non-common nouns (nominally once per article) is generally encouraged. Hi Sladen, I would love to answer your query, but do not really understand it. If I have edited something in particular that you feel is wrong, please let me know when/where/how it is wrong and I'll happily discuss. Judging by your recent editing history, it does not appear that our paths would cross very often (if at all) so I don't know where to begin to look! Oh, I thought you were suggesting I had deleted a reference without any reason! No, this is a rare case -- I have never seen anyone adding wikilinks to an author name within a citation and it seemed rather odd (either a mistake or some promotion of one page (Geoffrey L. Smith) on wikipedia) so I removed the link -- not hastily as you suggest, but with some careful thought. In retrospect, I have looked to see if there are any guidelines about linking within a citation, but can find nothing. I guess, therefore, there is no reason not to wikilink the author, but it is highly unusual, and seems excessive (particularly if works by the author (e.g. Charles Janeway) appears in many pages). Anyway, hopefully this explains my reasoning when removing the links -- it wasn't anything personal, just what I thought was sensible and appropriate. Wikilinking to a known author (if their article already exists) is very common. Looking over the templates and guidelines in question, it's the second field introduced on Template:Cite journal/doc (after first= and last=!); and the first reference at WP:OVERLINK#Notes has a good example—where the name does not equal the wikilink underneath it (having been already disambiguated to the right place). With multiple-author academic papers, the most notable individual (and the one lending their gravitas to the publication) is often placed at the end of the list, so you're more likely to see the last name(s) linked in cites from academic work, something that can't be done automatically with authorlink=

Moinsoon

Hi OwenX, I have a little question about your block of Moinsoon. Your reason for blocking is given as a long history of vandalism, and a vandalism only account, but the edit summary of this user doesn't follow that description. I only see 3 edits since 2007, one of those being a reversion of his/her own vandalism (i.e. just experimenting). Previous edits were 2 years ago, and contained a mixture of good and bad edits. Am I missing something (i.e. are there some deleted edits that I'm not privy to that are influencing your decision?) Just curious -- I thought maybe the block was a little too soon?? Moinsoon has a total of 26 edits over two years: the 25 you see on his Contributions list, and an attack page that has since been deleted. Out of those, I found a total of two edits which I consider useful: this and this. Reverting his own vandalism is neither here nor there. I think it is very kind of you to call this "a mixture of good and bad edits". It is clear that his primary reason for editing is to bad-mouth his friends/schoolmates. He blessed us with an 18 month absence, but upon his return, the last three edits make it clear he hasn't matured or abandoned his past habits. He has received numerous warnings, which he was quick to remove from his Talk page. He knows his actions aren't welcome, continues to disrupt, and nothing short of a block will keep him away. In cases of short-term vandalism I issue a temporary block, but this is not the case here. I do, however, appreciate your concern, and welcome any criticism of my actions.
