bot edits...

I've noticed that ClueBot ( the first ) is not marking its edits as bot edits; is this intentional? Ajl772 (talk) 21:40, 1 February 2008 (UTC)

It is. Anti-vandalism bots are not supposed to mark their edits as bot edits. Until just recently, ClueBot didn't even have the technical ability to mark its edits as bot edits. -- Cobi(t|c|b) 21:43, 1 February 2008 (UTC)

False Positive

I tried to follow the instructions to report a false positive, but there was no "My SQL ID" in the talk page message. The specific case is on User talk:Josheyboy who created, then blanked Josh Tinholt, leading to the article being speedied according to CSD G7. Reverting the blanking could confuse an admin (though it didn't in this case). I happened to notice when I looked at Josheyboy's talk page due to some other vandalism he perpetrated. WHY WAS MY RELEVANT INFORMATION ON RIC FLAIR DELETED!?

  Resolved

I would like to know why my factual information was "not constructive" on the Ric Flair article. It was 100% relevant. Care to explain? This unsigned comment was left by User:Jon56WWE

Do you mean this edit, where you wrote "You guys are pigs who dont know what you are talking about! My infomation was relevent! [sic]" or this edit, which is the one reverted by ClueBot, where you blanked the page? Yes, you may have added useful content at other times, but these are the ones that got reverted. Nice Work, ClueBot

I was reading the John McCain entry and spotted the intrusion of "JOHN MCCAIN ROCKS!!!!!!!!!". I went to edit that part out, since it has no part in an encyclopedic entry, to find it had already been removed. ClueBot spotted the fact that the interjection was out of place and removed it faster than a human could react. I was impressed. Shoshani (talk) 03:22, 6 February 2008 (UTC)

ClueBot IV

ClueBot IV removed my IP addition at WP:OP, w/ a edit summary of "adding clerk notices". The diff Explain? Calvin 1998 Talk Contribs 02:03, 7 February 2008 (UTC)

I need to fix that, ClueBot IV downloads the list and may take a minute or so to check for clerk notes it needs to add, during that time, if anyone edits, they will edit conflict with the bot. The bot makes a null edit if there are none, which is really what causes the problems, you were just unlucky to get edit conflicted twice. I'll be fixing it in the next hour or so. Sorry about that. -- Cobi(t|c|b) 02:59, 7 February 2008 (UTC)

Possible to trigger early archive on WP:OP?

I just tagged a bunch of blocked proxies, and the list needs a good clean-out. Would it be possible to run ClueBot IV ahead of schedule to help clean the backlog? Thanks! Nwwaew (Talk Page) (Contribs) (E-mail me) 00:27, 8 February 2008 (UTC)

ClueBot IV runs every few minutes, but it may take several minutes to check each host (it has to check all of the new hosts before adding the clerk notes). It runs a SYN scan on ports 1-65535 of each IP, of the ports found open, it runs Nmap to service/os fingerprint and confirm that they are open. Then it runs a proxy scanner (using libopm, a lot like BOPM) to actually check if there is an open proxy. It also runs whois and checks a few DNSBLs while it is at it. -- Cobi(t|c|b) 06:03, 8 February 2008 (UTC)

ClueBot IV False Negatives

ClueBot IV keeps missing a lot of TOR nodes/open proxies on the WP:OP page. How come? Calvin 1998 Talk Contribs 23:37, 7 February 2008 (UTC)

Various reasons. ClueBot IV only scans certain ports on the suspected proxy. Some proxies are behind a firewall, which may block the scan. Others are online CGI proxies (proxies accessed through an internet form), which aren't currently detected. And as for Tor, it uses different ports to help anonymity, so there is no one port to scan for. That, and I'm not sure if there is a way to detect Tor proxies, except for the Tor check website we link to. Nwwaew (Talk Page) (Contribs) (E-mail me) 00:30, 8 February 2008 (UTC)
ClueBot IV does check for tor, but since the only way to check it is against a list, and I don't know how often that list is updated, I chose to make ClueBot IV err on the safe side and report tor proxies as "no proxy found" (because it didn't find one, it just found a reference to one). If you click the link to the full report, go to the DNSBL section, it will show the results of several DNSBLs, if either of the tor lists return anything, then it is most likely a tor node. -- Cobi(t|c|b) 05:56, 8 February 2008 (UTC)
Not to mention that not all exit nodes publish their exit address. Got an idea for testing, have to work on it a bit Q T C 13:28, 9 February 2008 (UTC)

ClueBot IVs's WP:OP archiving

ClueBot seems to be missing a lot of IP's that have already been checked and blocked. Any idea why? Calvin 1998 Talk Contribs 18:12, 10 February 2008 (UTC)

Maybe because it does have a time limit? It won't archive it until it has been left (dealt with) idle for one day. It used to be 2 days, but that was a bit long. -- Cobi(t|c|b) 18:16, 10 February 2008 (UTC)

Reading the reports, it seems like that ClueBot is more of a pain than a gain. Revolt against ClueBot! —Preceding unsigned comment added by Wikedwiki3 (talkcontribs) 21:35, 5 February 2008 (UTC)

I beg to differ. Anti-vandalism bots help us fight vandalism, so we can go edit instead of going on constant patrol. That, and it makes sure that random people won't pull up an article while researching, and find large pictures of human reproductive anatomy instead. Is Wikipedia Actively Trying to Dissuade Contributors?

Yes, of course they are. I'm a world-class expert in my weird little field--by default since I invented many of the techniques--but every time I try to spread my expertise around, my articles get mangled or simply deleted. I've also tried several times to upload pictures to which I own the copyright, but some damned bot keeps deleting them. I'm not wasting time writing for Wikipedia anymore, but will put any new articles I write on my own website where they're safe from being mauled from spitheaded Philistines. Good bye, good riddance, and fuck off...

incorrect proxy detection

ClueBot fail to detect proxies at Wikipedia:WikiProject on open proxies. 88.191.25.38 port 80, 212.248.240.1 port 8080 - all were undetected --TAG (talk) 20:49, 20 February 2008 (UTC)

Well, the first one doesn't look like a normal proxy, but only a host-based proxy, which are a tad bit more difficult to detect. And all of the host-based proxies I have seen will work in normal proxy mode, too, except this one. For the second one ... the host's firewall must have detected a port scan and firewalled my IP off. Annoying, but there is nothing I can do to stop it. -- Cobi(t|c|b) 21:02, 20 February 2008 (UTC)

ClueBot IV rejects open proxy report

I added this open proxy report and CB IV noted it as "not a proxy". Yet, looking here, here and here, it shows as being a TOR node. Am I missing something? Franamax (talk) 02:20, 24 February 2008 (UTC)

ClueBot IV's scan should not be considered conclusive by the OPCs if it says "not a proxy", for more information, see: User talk:ClueBot Commons/Archives/2008/February#ClueBot_IV_False_Negatives. Thanks. -- Cobi(t|c|b) 02:26, 24 February 2008 (UTC)

Interaction with other warnings

Take a look at this diff [2]. You will see that ClueBot has ignored a level 4 warning immediately above (on the same day) and issued a a level 1 warning under a new February 2008 heading. A bit further up Cluebot ignored a level 3 warning from VoABot and again went back to level one and yet another February 2008 heading.

Our defence against the barbarians is spirited but not very co-ordinated. This one should have been blocked at least four warnings before he actually was. Is it not possible for ClueBot to take account of warnings given by other editors? SpinningSpark 20:10, 22 February 2008 (UTC)

Actually, you are incorrect. The warning above was more than 2 days before, and ClueBot ignores warnings longer ago than 2 days per consensus on IRC and at its BRFA. -- Cobi(t|c|b) 03:48, 24 February 2008 (UTC)
Thats very strange, if you look at the page as it now stands, the warning directly above is dated 22nd - same as Cluebots. I will try and unpick the history to see what happened here. SpinningSpark 10:13, 24 February 2008 (UTC)
Yes VoABot II seems to be at fault by not adding warnings at the bottom, the time stamps are not in sequence. I will go tell them. SpinningSpark 10:26, 24 February 2008 (UTC)

Two things

1. When it puts a warning on the talk page of a user whose vandalism it reverted, the "something else" should say what it was replaced with. 2. "report it". "report" should be capitalised. 124.180.24.193 (talk) 07:05, 27 February 2008 (UTC)

  1. It used to, but some administrators thought it a bad idea.
  2. Yeah, I'll make that change next time I update the code for the bot.
