Recent clean-up edit to List of racing cyclists and pacemakers with a cycling-related death
Today you edited this article with AWB. Most of the changes make sense to me but I am wondering about the changes to the "Cite web" templates that removed "Future plc" as the publisher for Cycling News. If you could explain that I'd appreciate it. Thanks, Shearonink (talk) 23:21, 11 January 2023 (UTC)
- Hi Shearonink: removal of
|publisher=
in these cases is in line with the guidelines at Template:Cite_web/doc#Publisher. It doesn't add anything useful to the citation. In the unlikely event that a user wants to know who the publisher is, that information is available in the cyclingnews.com article. Colonies Chris (talk) 23:59, 11 January 2023 (UTC)- It's not terrible if that information is not included but what specific guidelines are you referring to at Template:Cite web/doc? I just really want to understand and follow procedure going forward. I tend to include all possible information in cite templates, being as complete as possible in the interests of verifiability. And when you mention that "in the unlikely event that a user wants to know who the publisher is, that information is available in the cyclingnews.com article" that is true now but it could change in the future. Also, the same could be said about other information in the cited reference that the template goes ahead and includes. Thanks, Shearonink (talk) 01:27, 12 January 2023 (UTC)
- At the link I provided, it says "Publisher: ... Not normally used for periodicals" Cycling News, whether in print or online, is a periodical. The key question here is whether specifying the publisher - or any other possible parameter of the template - is a help to a reader who wants to check the citation. If it doesn't contribute to that, it doesn't belong in the citation.
|publisher=
is mostly only useful for locating books and other offline resources. (Also, publisher for a periodical may change and often does, which would raise the question of whether the publisher specified should be the one at the time of publication, or the current one - a question which can only be answered if we know the purpose of including it, and that's not clear. Colonies Chris (talk) 11:53, 12 January 2023 (UTC)- Thanks for that clarification. Shearonink (talk) 16:29, 12 January 2023 (UTC)
