Your account has been blocked from editing Wikipedia with this username. This is because your username, Consistency is Key (web coding login error), does not meet our username policy.

Your username is the only reason for this block. You are welcome to choose a new username (see below) and continue editing.

A username should not be promotional, related to a "real-world" group or organization, misleading, offensive or disruptive. Also, usernames may not end in the word "bot" unless the account is an approved bot account

You are encouraged to choose a new account name that meets our policy guidelines and create the account yourself. Alternatively, if you have already made edits and you wish to keep your existing contributions under a new name, then you may request a change in username by:

  1. Adding {{unblock-un|your new username here}} on your user talk page. You should be able to do this even though you are blocked, as you can usually still edit your own talk page. If not, you may wish to contact the blocking administrator by clicking on "E-mail this user" on their talk page.
  2. At an administrator's discretion, you may be unblocked for 24 hours to file a request.
  3. Please note that you may only request a name that is not already in use, so please check here for a listing of already taken names. The account is created upon acceptance, thus do not try to create the new account before making the request for a name change. For more information, please see Wikipedia:Changing username.
If you think that you were blocked in error, you may appeal this block by adding below this notice the text {{unblock|Your reason here}}, but you should read our guide to appealing blocks first. Laser brain (talk) 22:32, 10 July 2016 (UTC)Reply

Request reason:

What's the problem with this user name? Where does it say in the rules that my user name can't be like this? Why didn't you even warn me first? Why didn't you look at my contributions to see that I was having a problem logging in with my user name that looks like this except without the parenthetical phrase?

Suddenly my main user name (just this without the parenthetical phrase) started giving me a weird error. See my contribution about it; it's on a talk page that has a good handful of people complaining about the same thing. Why couldn't you have checked that out before just assuming that I had made this name with some kind of "ill will" or something like that? Decline reason:

If you want to make any further unblock requests, please read the guide to appealing blocks first, then use the {{unblock}} template again. If you make too many unconvincing or disruptive unblock requests, you may be prevented from editing this page until your block has expired. Do not remove this unblock review while you are blocked.

I didn't say you had any ill will, did I? It's against username policy because it's confusing to other users who might see it and think they are receiving an error from the Wikimedia software. We don't issue warnings for violations of username policy—you just get blocked until you change your username. If you're having technical issues with your main account, you shouldn't be making edits with your alternate account with error codes in the title. --Laser brain (talk) 22:48, 10 July 2016 (UTC)Reply
You don't have to say that I had a name with ill will just to make it seem like you thought that, since most blocked user names are blocked because they're "disgusting" or hateful. Right?
You're pretty good at misunderstandings, aren't ya? I never said there were "error codes in the title." I put that parenthetical phrase there so that you could see that I only made this account because trying to log in with my other account gives me an error code, so that it would (attempt to) be an obvious NON-sock account. Why would this quick explanation as part of the temporary user name confuse other users? And why shouldn't I edit with it just until my main account name is trouble-shot?
If I change this to a name that doesn't look like the other one and doesn't have an explanation to it (like it's just the other one except that it's another version), then wouldn't that just make it look like a sockpuppet account? What about the rules about doppelganger accounts? Did you totally forget that other users are allowed to have more than one account for different purposes as long as they don't abuse them (dopps, etc.)? I mean why wasn't it obvious what I was trying to do, especially because of what you'd see if you had bothered to go through my editing history to see if there are more clues about this parenthetical phrase by what's inside my contribution history here at this one? Consistency is Key (web coding login error) (talk) 23:06, 10 July 2016 (UTC)Reply
Usernames are blocked for plenty of different reasons. Some are offensive, some are promotional, and some are just misleading/confusing. If you're having a technical problem with your account, the solution isn't to create an alt account with the error message as part of the username and start editing articles with it. It's confusing to other users who may be watching those articles. I will say that you seem to have a lot of knowledge about Wikipedia for someone who registered their account yesterday. I'm curious what other accounts you have operated besides "Consistency is Key". Do you have prior accounts we should know about, that may perhaps be blocked? --Laser brain (talk) 23:17, 10 July 2016 (UTC)Reply
I didn't create a user name with the error message as part of the user name. I created a user name with a short explanation of the problem as part of the user name. Why can't you guys understand that this is just a temporary thing until you (someone from your system; I've notified a guy who knows how to fix this, and now we're just waiting for him to be back and see it and do it) fix your system's problem?
I do have a fair amount of knowledge about the project because I used to edit as just an IP. They're fairly common around these parts, ya know. Haven't you heard of those?
So like I asked you before, but which you still haven't answered: Why do you believe it would be so confusing for other editors to see a mere explanation on a user name that's the same, but only different with the explanation? And why would that be any different than other similarly named accounts that are allowed (as I already explained)? How about you just unblock this one for right now until that guy fixes my other one, and then as soon as we see that the other one is fixed (meaning that I can log in and edit with it, of course), you block this one indefinitely? This isn't my system. I'm here as a volunteer like mostly everyone else. You're trying to get the attention of a MediaWiki developer who probably doesn't check his Talk page very often. You should probably post to The MediaWiki support desk for broader visibility. In the mean time, I still think it's confusing and misleading for other users to see your name pop up with the phrase "web coding login error" in it, whether it's a real error message or not. Whoever reviews your unblock request is free to unblock you without consulting me if they believe I'm in the wrong. --Laser brain (talk) 11:51, 11 July 2016 (UTC)Reply

(Happy 7/11 Day today, roughly 50 years, half a century, after the Icee was released as the 7-Eleven Slurpee! Even though I'm not from there, as just a customer I suggest that you go get a free "birthday cake" Slurpee between 11:A and 7:P, at least if you're in the USA!) Dude, Laser brain, have you never heard of the plural form of the word "you," which, unfortunately is also just "you," and is therefore context-dependent? I was referring to "you" as a group of admins in general (anyone who has more authority than just users in general and must assume some of the responsibility of the caretaking of the establishment). How can you (singular) not understand that? Anyway, when are you going to answer my question as to why you think other users would be so "confused" the addendum to my user name that it would be a problem? And even if they are confused by it, why would that even be a problem anyway? I'll take my problem over to MW support then. Thanks for pointing me out to that. Meanwhile, how about if I pose an unblock-with-username-change request with the phrase "(My original account has a temporary log-in error.)" in it? Would you then be willing to unblock it temporarily until my other one gets fixed? -- Consistency is Key

In my personal opinion, as an admin with over nine years experience in the role, Laser brain is correct. --Anthony Bradbury"talk" 13:17, 11 July 2016 (UTC)Reply
We have, of course, no wish, need, or intention to be discouraging. I see that your other account worked for you over the course of the day before yesterday (i.e. July 9th). Could you please explain what happens now if you try to login on that account? While I understand that your modified name is intended to be descriptive of the problem, it does not give adequate detail.--Anthony Bradbury"talk" 13:29, 11 July 2016 (UTC)Reply

Huhh, Anthony! Well, I could have sworn I've had much different experiences than that as an IP-based editor. As my address changes from time to time, you won't be able to follow my history around really easily to see this, but I've had many instances where one of you guys will tell me that I was "editing disruptively" or even "edit-warring" but not say the same about a registered editor who was doing things in a very similar way. So maybe your situation in your circles is somehow different than what I've observed and seen happening for a long time.
Anyway, as I told Laser guy, now that I know about the MW Support department, I'll post my complaint there. However, this is the error message I got when trying to log into my original account:

[V4PWKApAAEQAAIrxM9QAAACM] 2016-07-11 17:23:53: Fatal exception of type "Exception"

And it happens no matter which browser or other system's IP address I use. How do you fix that?
Don't forget your free Slurpee before 7: PM today (7/11 Day, half a century after the Slurpee was officially released)! A Slurpee/Icee fan myself, Consistency is Key (web coding login error) (talk) 18:43, 11 July 2016 (UTC)!Reply

UPDATE: Here's that posting to the MW Support Desk: [[1]]

And now, since supposed "user confusion" is such a big concern about this, then just temporarily, until someone fixes my log-in problem at the original Consistency is Key:
