Hey I wanted to tell you that while your admirationship for the webcomic is admirable, it doesn't belong here in an encyclapedia so when we vote delete we're not saying that it's a useless article but rather it's one that doesn't belong in wikipedia. One of the factors that caused me to vote delete was that I didn't understand what the article was trying to say and I doubt any non fan of that paticular comic would eithier, this is important because visitors can hit the "Random Page" button and possibly come across your page and that type of thing could really be confusing. Hi! I caught your edit over at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Final Fantasy on the subject of individual character articles. I've responded to your comments on the project talk page, but I wanted to expand on it a little here. Articles about fictional creations are kind of a tricky area, here, but the general rule of thumb is that, as a general reference encyclopedia, Wikipedia's primary goal is to provide enough basic information about a subject to inform the uninitiated, while not overwhelming them with a level of detail that would only interest a diehard fan. In addition to WP:NOT, there are a number of other guideline, policy, and essay pages that deal with this: Wikipedia:Importance, Wikipedia:Fancruft, and WP:FICT. Moreover, one of the stated goals of the Final Fantasy WikiProject is to ensure that the information we include regarding the series really belongs in Wikipedia (see Wikipedia:WikiProject_Final_Fantasy/Style). This isn't meant to scare you away: we welcome your contributions to the project. But the kind of detail you advocate is really more suited to a specialized site like Wikibooks or the Final Fantasy Wiki. – Seancdaug 04:50, 5 February 2006 (UTC)

You continually confuse the issue of "popularity" with "notability": they are not equivalent terms, and I would ask you to please stop insinuating that I have ever suggested that a given character deserves an article simply because that character is thought of more fondly than any other character. Bill Clinton may not be as "popular" as Ronald Reagan, but both are well-known, influential, and important figures. On the other hand, a character like Matoya is simply not as well-known (or notable) as Sephiroth.

The number of fans of a particular game, again, isn't really the issue, as Wikipedia is not a fansite. Not everyone who has played a Final Fantasy game would qualify as a "fan" in the way we are using the term. The total audience for the pre-PlayStation era titles is many times smaller than the total audience of the post-PlayStation era titles. By any reasonable measure, games from Final Fantasy VII on up are more familiar to the general public, and have had a greater influence on popular culture than games from Final Fantasy VI on down. It is a mistake to judge the impact of a game based on its internet fanbase, because such groups are self-selecting and skew the numbers. I can, however, offer sales figures, Google search results, and appearances in subsequent games all of which would suggest that the later titles are simply better known, and have had a more significant impact, that the earlier titles. This is not bias: I've been playing the Final Fantasy series since the first game was released in North America, and my two favorite titles are Final Fantasy III and Final Fantasy V. Nor does it imply that any and all information (fancruft and all) is fair game for Final Fantasy VII on up: if you'd care to look at the relevant talk pages, you'll see that there are regular discussions about what is and what isn't fair game for the later titles, and you'll also notice the large number of post-Final Fantasy VII articles listed on our "to be merged" list. I feel that you're seeing conspiracy theories where there simply are none. To suggest that we "ignore" the pre-PlayStation games is, frankly, ludicrous: Final Fantasy VI is undoubtedly our strongest article, is one of the very few articles we've put forward for the Wikipedia 1.0 project, and is our best prospect for featured article status in the near future.

As for the Final Fantasy Wiki... I'm not sure what you're talking about. It is running MediaWiki, and is part of the Wikicities project. It is, to be sure, nowhere near as active as Wikipedia itself, it's far from moribund. I contribute semi-regularly, and it averages ten to twenty edits per day. Plenty of room to grow, to be sure, but there are plenty of people there. – Seancdaug 07:27, 5 February 2006 (UTC)

The thing is, notability is more than a gut feeling. Quite simply, more gamers are familiar with Selphie than are familiar with Terra, because Final Fantasy VIII was played by a lot more people than Final Fantasy VI. By that same logic, Selphie has a stronger claim to cultural significance than Terra (though I admit that I'm not sure either character has a particularly strong claim). As it is, it really isn't an issue of what character "deserves" an article, because there are really no more than one or two characters in the entire series who have had any sort of significant cultural impact outside of the gaming community. Ideally, most of these articles would be merged into lists. It isn't a contest: that Vincent Valentine has an article while Bartz Klauser does not does not mean that we're showing favoritism to the former character. The reason many of these individual character articles exist is because, in their current form, they're too long to fit anywhere else. Many character articles have been pared down to be merged into a list: this was done, actually, for Kefka a few months back, in response to frequent complaints that the individual article was riddled with fancruft. Having pared the article down to size, it became managable enough to fit into List of Final Fantasy VI characters. For all the complaining about the fact that Kefka Palazzo does not exist as a seperate article, no one has bothered to try expanding the list entry to the point where it needs to be placed into a seperate article, nor have their been any serious complaints that the list entry lacks necessary information about the character. Per Wikipedia guidelines, article size management really is the only reason to have individual articles at all (with the exception of a handful of special cases, like Cloud Strife or Sephiroth, who might qualify as reasonably significant cultural figures outside of Final Fantasy VII... and, even then, only barely). – Seancdaug 17:52, 5 February 2006 (UTC)

I can't help but feel that I'm repeating myself, here. "Legitimate" (i.e., true) information is different from "relevant" information. One could write hundreds of pages on any given character, all of which is true and factually verifiable, but none of which serves the needs of a general interest encyclopedia. Most individual character articles contain little more than a restatement of the story of the game, which should never exceed two or three paragraphs, and approximately one paragraph of gameplay information, which quickly devolves into strategy guide material if it grows much beyond that. – Seancdaug 20:58, 5 February 2006 (UTC)

Quite frankly, I resent the implication that I have ever accused you of bias. I have not. Ideally, "perspective" should not enter into this discussion at all: if we're going to claim that a character is notable, we need to be able to cite evidence of that notability. You've chosen to ignore me the past four times I've said this, but the simple fact of the matter is that a game that has sold over 9 million copies almost invariably has a larger impact (and, by association, cultural notability) than a game that has sold 3 million copies. This is why a character like Tifa Lockhart has an article while Mesia (major character from the NES game Crystalis) does not.

Even so, you're right in pointing out that selling a large number of games does not automatically make a game, or its characters, notable. It is not, as you say, an "absolute test," though it is a reasonable signpost. Nevertheless, we should also be able to point to other factors to support any claim of notability: the fact that Cloud, for instance, was featured in a cross-promotional tie-in with Pepsi, and has had more cameo appearances in other titles than any other Square Enix character. Obviously, Cloud is the most extreme case, but we should be able to point to similar information for every character article.

By and large, though, I have no argument with your list of characters (though I'm not certain that either Rinoa or Garnet are particularly notable outside of Final Fantasy VIII and Final Fantasy IX, respectively, and I think Vivi probably deserves an article more than either of them, if only because of the large quantity of Vivi-centric merchandise out there). And, to be honest, I wouldn't even go that far. My primary goal, at this stage, is to prevent the number of character articles from growing much larger. In the long term, I'd like to see many of the articles that currently exist get merged into more general lists, but I've always advocated move gradually towards that goal. – Seancdaug 04:50, 6 February 2006 (UTC)

Sorry for this very late response, but I agree fully with your last note on my talk page. Ideally, I think we should increase the number of links to more specific Wiki projects: provide links from List of Final Fantasy VI characters to finalfantasy:Kefka Palazzo and so on. And I also agree that the post-Final Fantasy VII character articles should not be expanded any further, and that most should be trimmed down substantially, with an eye to merging them, as well. I think the bias against such articles for pre-Final Fantasy VII games you've commented on is really something of a fluke: Final Fantasy VII articles attract a lot more attention than Final Fantasy VI articles, and, generally speaking, it's a lot easier to do things like merging and redirecting when you're dealing with three or four dedicated editors than two dozen irregular contributors. The goals remain the same, but the process of attaining those goals moves much more slowly. – Seancdaug 18:49, 17 February 2006 (UTC)

I apologise. I didn't realise this would offend. I thought the information would be useful, and I couldn't see anything like it currently in that wiki. I wouldn't have put the information on if I didn't think it would help improve the wiki. Obviously it's not in a good state right now, but it can be improved. Concerning Maranda

I quickly looked over your list of FFVI terms, and it's a well done page, but I thought I'd let you know that thing about Maranda being torched isn't in reference to the city itself. It's a lot clearer in the Japanese, but Cyan was referring to the surrounding countryside; homesteads, plantations, etc. Not the city itself. Remember, things on the world map aren't set to scale, and the idea is that these countries are a lot bigger than what we see in the game. Just compare Vector in-game with Vector from FMVs for a nice example of how things aren't really set to scale.

Well, the way it's worded in the article is "the city of Maranda," which implies only what we see in the game, but the way Cyan worded it is "the country of Maranda." FF Wiki Forum

Yes it is easy to have a forum if you have access to the Web Host. Just install phpBB which is open source. I'll be glad to help you with that.

Alas, you don't have access to the web host at Wikia, do you ? In that case, you can a)ask the Sysop there and see what options are available, b)try to use talk pages as a forum or c) Get a web host.

Im not sure you want to bother with option c... It would be a differnt URL and possibly a different look and feel. But if you do want to pursue it, I'll be glad to offer you a spot on my site or you can get your own relatively cheap. My host goes for $7.95 a month and there are even cheaper ones! Re: Chrono Trigger images

Which article and which images? I have noticed someone deleted some Magus pics from Magus' article, but have been working in the Album WikiProject and had not checked for other articles. Note that, in order to qualify for Fair use, the images must be used in the article, and not just decoration. In the Magus' case at least, the images were deleted because they were being used as decoration [3] which is really right. Remember that the article must talk about the image, either describing or explaining it, otherwise it won't qualify as Fair use. -- ReyBrujo 16:40, 1 July 2006 (UTC)

Hmm... That would take quite a lot of time. You need to find the source from where the image was picken. Or find a replacement and inform about from where you took it. I advice this second approach, as it is virtually impossible to find the same image around. In the instruction manual, page 7, there is that image about Lucca, but is not a scanned copy. Note that reuploading the image once it is deleted is considered disruption, which is not taken kindly. -- ReyBrujo 18:09, 1 July 2006 (UTC)

First, if the article wants to become Featured, it is better to have no images than images with source, license or fair use rationale problems, see the fourth criteria. As for the images, you can link to them by adding : before the Image, in example, [[:Image:Goldmoon.jpg]] will produce Image:Goldmoon.jpg while not inlining it, which is completely fine with the Fair use criteria and enough for you to link to images you have uploaded. Quoting the 9th Fair use criteria policy (emphasis mine):

Fair use images should be used only in the article namespace. Used outside article space, they are often enough not covered under the fair use doctrine. They should never be used on templates (including stub templates and navigation boxes) or on user pages.

Most of the current information in the two paragraphs can go under a "backstory" heading, with a 3-4 paragraph summary of the plot the key inclusion. Currently, the actual plot itself has only about 1-2 paragraphs of coverage, which will lead to some oppose votes from the inclusionists. Alright, cool. Chrono Cross

I just finished editing through use of a hard copy of the article, and tons of fat have been melted away to leave a crisp product. I'm making the rounds on a few editors' talk pages to invite them to give the article a glance. Once Chrono Trigger is locked in FA, Chrono Cross should be next. Final Fantasy IV

Hey there. Long time, not talk. I'm signed on to help bring up the status of the Final Fantasy IV article. I found an excellent reference to the information regarding the differences between versions of the game (it can be found linked on this page). The author states on the FAQ that he'd like to notified if his FAQ is linked to on other webpages (in this case, our reference section). Unfortunately, I'm having trouble getting into contact with him, as he's apparently no longer a student at the University of Pennsylvania, and the only other person by his name told me I had the wrong person when I contacted him. So, I'm wondering if it would be okay to go ahead and use it since we won't be quoting from it directly (we already have our information, we just need to source it) or if there's a list out there that's comparable to this one. Regarding the quotation marks, the Manual of Style recommends "logical" quoting: "When punctuating quoted passages, include the punctuation mark inside the quotation marks only if the sense of the punctuation mark is part of the quotation ("logical" quotations)." What this means is that if the puctuation mark is part of what is being quoted, include it inside the quotation marks, otherwise put it outside the quoation marks. So instead of:
The world contains both an "Upper World" and an "Underground."
you would write:
The world contains both an "Upper World" and an "Underground".

If I don't, someone else will. I agree with your sentiment, and there were instances when I added a rationale to images used in compliance with Wikipedia policy. This was a borderline case, as the image was a sprite of a minor video game character. If Wikipedia articles, even lists, were to contain a copyrighted illustration of every character to appear in any Final Fantasy game, the whole article would become a mere gallery - a game guide that infringes on the rights of publishers who license such content, and fulfilling a role that Wikipedia policy specifically disavows (see WP:NOT#IINFO & WP:NOT#LINK). Note that the decision to delete was not made with any prejudice to your contribution, it came as a result of a pragmatic reading of policy. I haven't yet signed up at your Wiki, no. The thing is I'm not a passionate FF player - certainly not enough to get into the kind of detail that the FF wikia gets into. I've played almost all of the games but I'm just not into them enough to work extensively on articles. I joined the project because of Final Fantasy XI and trimming down the character class pages - both of which I've worked on extensively, and my work on the latter has been all but destroyed. The former is pretty much intact, only because nobody else in the project plays or cares about the game and therefore, they've been pretty hands-off about it.

Anyway, what I'm trying to say is that I'm not going to be much use at a detailed FF site. I was working here so I could get the relevant overview information about the FF series here on the main Wikipedia - and I agree with you that it's becoming a horrible place for that. They're mistaking a necessary level of detail for triviality, and if I have to hear "out-of-universe information" used as a blanket excuse to merge and delete everything they can get their grubby hands on again I'm going to shoot myself. I'll check out your Wiki though - seeing as most of the stuff I've ever worked on has apparently gotten transwiki'd there anyway, if what the WPFF says can be believed... :) -RaCha'ar 11:28, 1 June 2007 (UTC)

We have a policy against transwikiing, which used to be it was "strongly discouraged" so that good, original articles could be written from scratch and we didn't have to look like a bunch of thieves. Also, I provide wikilinks to many Wikia pages and categories, where the detals are available, and I even transwiki material sometimes, if it's not on the Wikia. Becuase a lot of this is already covered on the Wikia in more detail, which means all that's left is providing wikilinks to the various character or creature categories to usher people to where details belong. I was just noticing your deleted userpage, and you have been very productive here at wikipedia, you have barnstars, friends, so many things you wouldn't want to throw away. In fact, the reason I have become a mergist is because of the presence of the Final Fantasy wikia where you are also, and you could really help make sure that none of this content is lost. I would have totally opposed cutting these articles if there weren't a FFwiki; in fact, with my favorite book series, Lone Wolf (gamebooks), I had to start my own wiki to save the 70+ articles I originally wrote for Wikipedia! I've been okay :) Been mostly managing the FF Wiki. I know there are a lot of interviews that have all kinds of stuff in them (like, for example, the fact that Strong Sad is the hardest voice for Matt to do). I know how you can do it. Follow Starmen.net's example. Start a Chrono Siege of Square.
